Who can see zyBooks solutions?
It depends on the kind of activity. From zyBooks’ help center:
| Activity | Students | Instructors and TAs |
|---|---|---|
| Participation activities (animations and learning questions) | Yes. A learning question “must simply be eventually answered correctly, and answers are available to students.” For certain activities, students “are able to click the ‘Show answer’ button.” | Yes |
| Challenge activities | No. “Solutions for challenge activities are not available to students.” Some auto-generated ones show a solution after a wrong answer, then give a new problem. | Yes, from a “View solution” button beneath the Check or Run button |
| zyLabs | Only if the instructor allows it. On custom labs, instructors can tick “Students can see solution.” | “By default, zyLab solutions are only available to instructors or TAs with the ‘View solutions’ permission.” |
Instructors grant that permission to TAs on the “Manage class” page. Sources: viewing solutions, About zyBooks, previous answers.
Why don’t zyBooks answers online match your book?
zyBooks gives three reasons in its own help center:
- Many problems are generated. “Many of our challenge activities are auto-generated, so each student gets a unique problem that requires a unique solution.” Some are “progressions” that start easy and get harder after each level you get right.
- Every class gets its own book. A class zyBook is “an instantiation of one or more catalog zyBooks for use in a particular class,” and the instructor can “reconfigure the chapters/sections to match the class’ syllabus.” zyBooks says posted solutions are “hard to find due to zyBook configurability (so CA 7.1.1 is different for different zyBooks).”
- The content keeps changing. zyBooks says “we push thousands of small improvements to our live content live every term,” and it changes many of its maintained labs “each year or even each term, causing previous-term solutions to fail (and be easily noticeable).”
So an answer labelled “zyBooks 3.1.2 challenge activity” from another class may belong to a different problem. zyBooks also says “We can detect if a student submits a solution from the web,” without saying how, and that an internal team “regularly submits takedown requests for copyright violations” against sites that post its lab solutions (zyBooks Help; takedown requests).
What does zyBooks show you when you get one wrong?
Explanations, and on some problems the solution. zyBooks says participation questions’ “explanations are key elements, especially for wrong answers that seek to break down misconceptions.” Challenge activities “give immediate feedback,” and some auto-generated ones show the solution after a wrong answer and then give you a different problem.
Trying again is safe. “Re-attempting activities can never decrease points already achieved.” When you return to a section, zyBooks hides your earlier answers on purpose: “When students review material, we want them to answer the questions again.” Points, due dates and Canvas sync are covered in our guide to zyBooks participation and challenge activities.
What does zyBooks record?
Completion of every activity, and a lot more on coding labs. From the help center:
| What is recorded | What zyBooks says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Activity completion | A participation activity is one “for which a student’s completion is visible to an instructor.” Reports show what percent of activities each student completed by a date and time the instructor picks. | About zyBooks; reports |
| Time spent | Instructors can choose “to include time spent data” in an activity report. | Reports |
| zyLab coding trail | Each run, each submission’s score and “The length of time they’ve spent on the assignment.” | Coding trails |
| Lab submissions | “Instructors can see a log of IP addresses for all of a student’s submissions,” and a similarity checker flags “submitted programs that are very similar.” | Cheating detection and prevention |
| Keystrokes in Advanced zyLabs | “Every keystroke in our CR2 IDE is logged for both instructors and students,” with “pastes, deletions, and other file actions in a timestamped timeline.” | Cheating detection and prevention |
Late work is recorded too. It just doesn’t count toward that assignment: “Activity completed after a due date will not count toward that assignment’s score, even if the activity itself is recorded.”
How can you get honest help in zyBooks?
- On a participation question you can’t get, use Show answer where it appears, read the explanation, then answer it again yourself. zyBooks built that button in on purpose.
- On a challenge activity, read the feedback and any solution zyBooks shows before you start the next problem. It is written for the problem you just missed.
- Use the AI hints if your instructor turned them on. On code-writing challenge activities, “After a learner fails the same level twice, a help button will appear,” and zyBooks says its tutor asks questions “without pointing to the answer.” In Advanced zyLabs, a failed test can show “help me with this test.”
- Ask your instructor or TA. They can see the solutions and your activity, so they can see where you are stuck.
- If a score looks wrong, check the activity icon first. zyBooks says the main sign that work was recorded is “a filled-in icon on the activity’s upper-right.”
Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a desktop app for Mac and Windows from El Dorado Ignition LLC. It has no zyBooks answer key and doesn’t make one. It follows the zyBooks link in your Canvas course and uses its general vision agent, not a solver written for zyBooks: it plays participation animations, answers learning questions and works challenge activities one level at a time, then reads zyBooks’ completion marks.
- Everything it does is recorded as your activity, with zyBooks’ timestamps. It does not fake, hide or backdate any of it.
- It does not do zyLabs, code-writing challenge activities or zyBooks assessments, and it does not run inside LockDown Browser.
- It does not ask for or type your zyBooks password. It uses the same Canvas launch you would click.
- We have published no zyBooks run, so we publish no zyBooks accuracy figure. Plans are $11.99, $24.99 or $49.99 a month, with no free plan.
zyBooks’ Terms. The zyBooks Terms of Use, effective November 7, 2025, list among prohibited uses “Using any automated means for making submissions to the Site or Services.” They also bar “Posting solutions to any zyBook exercises, participation activities, challenge activities, lab activities, or similar activities, except as authorized by a course’s instructor.” In our reading, the first clause reaches Silent Student. We are not lawyers, so read the Terms yourself. Other platforms’ rules on bots and AI agents are quoted side by side in AI tool policies by homework platform. Your course policy applies too, and under Silent Student’s Terms (section 5) you are responsible for both.

Questions people ask
Is there a zyBooks answer key PDF?
Not from zyBooks for students. zyBooks says challenge activity solutions are not available to students, and zyLab solutions are instructor-only by default. Many challenge activities are auto-generated and each class zyBook is configured for its class, so a PDF from another class may not match yours.
Can students see zyBooks challenge activity solutions?
Not on request. zyBooks says “solutions for challenge activities are not available to students.” Some auto-generated challenge activities show a solution after a wrong answer and then give you a different problem.
Can instructors see zyBooks solutions?
Yes. zyBooks says “Instructors have the ability to view solutions for most activities,” and instructors can give TAs a “View solutions” permission.
Does zyBooks show answers to participation activities?
Yes. zyBooks says participation answers “are available to students,” and for certain activities students can click “Show answer.” A participation question only needs to be answered correctly eventually.
What can zyBooks see when you work on a lab?
A lot. zyBooks says instructors see each lab’s coding trail and time spent, can run a similarity checker, and can see “a log of IP addresses for all of a student’s submissions.” Advanced zyLabs log every keystroke in zyBooks’ own editor.
Does Silent Student give you zyBooks answers?
No. It has no zyBooks answer key. Its general vision agent works participation and challenge activities on screen in your account, where zyBooks records the activity as yours. zyBooks’ Terms bar automated submissions, so read them first.

How this guide was made. We read each zyBooks page listed above on October 20, 2026 and quote them directly. The point that an answer from another class may belong to a different problem is our inference from what zyBooks says about generated problems and class zyBooks. We wrote the guide with AI assistance and checked each quote against its source.
