How homework platforms work

Short, sourced answers to the questions students ask about ALEKS, WebAssign, SmartBook, Pearson MyLab, Cengage MindTap and Canvas quizzes: whether there is an answer key, whether work submits itself, how many attempts you get, what happens when work is late or a timer runs out, and how it is graded. Each answer quotes the publisher’s own help pages and links to them.

The guides

Is there an ALEKS answer key?

No usable one. ALEKS picks each question from your earlier answers and generates new instances of its problems. The guide covers the Initial Knowledge Check, Progress and Goal Completion Knowledge Checks, how points and explanations work, and proctoring, from ALEKS and McGraw Hill pages.

Does WebAssign automatically submit?

Not for untimed assignments: WebAssign saves your answers but does not submit them. Timed assignments submit when the timer reaches zero. The guide covers the three submission rules, due dates and the server clock, extensions and answer keys, from Cengage Help.

How is SmartBook graded?

On completion before the due date. Confidence ratings don’t move the progress bar, wrong answers lengthen the assignment, and Recharge doesn’t change the score. The guide covers late work, grade posting and what instructors see, from McGraw Hill’s SmartBook guides.

How many attempts do you get on MyLab Math, and is there partial credit?

Usually three tries per step on homework, and partial credit only when your instructor allows it. The guide covers tests, Similar Exercise and late penalties, quoted from Pearson’s help.

What happens when a MindTap assignment is late?

Most MindTap activities auto-submit at the due date with no penalty. The guide covers late periods, penalty math, reopening and extensions, quoted from Cengage’s help.

What happens when a Canvas quiz time limit runs out?

Canvas auto-submits, the timer keeps running if you leave, and the Until date beats the time limit. The guide covers Classic and New Quizzes, quoted from Instructure.

How these guides are written

  • Each fact about a platform is quoted from the publisher’s own help or support pages, with a link and the date we checked it.
  • Where we draw a conclusion the publisher doesn’t state, we say it is our reading.
  • Each guide ends with a short, separate section on where Silent Student fits, including what it doesn’t do and the platform’s own terms.
  • We make Silent Student, a desktop app for Canvas courses and the courseware they open. We are not affiliated with Cengage, McGraw Hill, Pearson, Instructure or any platform we write about.
