How do you unsubmit on a computer?
Google’s student guide lists these steps:
- Go to classroom.google.com and sign in with your school or personal Google Account.
- Click the class, then Classwork.
- Click the assignment, then View instructions.
- Click Unsubmit and confirm.
Google’s page then says: “This assignment is now unsubmitted. Turn it in again before the due date.”
How do you unsubmit in the Google Classroom app?
The steps match on Android, iPhone and iPad, per the mobile versions of Google’s guide:
- Tap Classroom.
- Tap the class, then Classwork, then the assignment.
- On the Your work card, tap Expand.
- Tap Unsubmit and confirm.
The app shows the same reminder: resubmit before the due date.
How do you resubmit on Google Classroom?
Make your changes, then click Turn in and confirm, or Mark as done if that is the button your assignment has. Google says “The status of the assignment changes to Turned in.” Files, links and new Docs, Slides, Sheets or Drawings all go under Your work, and you can remove an attachment before you turn the work in again.
Unsubmitting is also how you edit a doc your teacher made for you. Google’s teacher guide says that when each student gets a copy, “When students turn in the assignment, they can’t edit the document until you return it to them,” and Google’s student guide points to Unsubmit whenever you want to change work you already turned in.
Work your teacher has already graded and returned is different. Google’s grading guide says “students can do more work and resubmit the assignment,” and the teacher can then change the grade and return it again.
Can teachers see when you unsubmit on Google Classroom?
They can see your status and how many times you turned the work in. Google’s list of teacher email notifications covers resubmissions and late submissions, and it has no entry for unsubmitting. Here is what Google’s help says a teacher has:
| You | What your teacher has | Google’s wording |
|---|---|---|
| Unsubmit | Your work is back in the Assigned group on the Student work page. | “Assigned—Work that students have to turn in, including missing or unsubmitted work” |
| Turn it in again | An email, if the teacher has this notification on. | “Resubmissions of student work: A student resubmits work.” |
| Turn it in after the due date | A late status, plus an email if that notification is on. | “Late submissions of student work: A student submits work after the due date.” |
| Any time after turning it in | See history on your work. | “how the grade for an assignment has changed and how many times a student has submitted an assignment” |
So a teacher who opens See history can count your submissions, and a count above one shows you turned the work in more than once. Google says See history “is only available on turned in and graded assignments.” Email alerts depend on each teacher: Google’s notification guide says teachers switch each type on or off and can change them “at any time.”
Does unsubmitting make your assignment late?
Only if you turn it in again after the due date, and then yes, even if your first submission was on time. Google repeats it in the student guide: “Any assignment turned in or marked done after the due date is marked late, even if you previously submitted the work before the due date.” Google’s teacher guide adds that “Work is marked Missing or Turned in late as soon as the due date and time arrive.”
You might not get to turn it in at all. The student guide warns: “You can only submit an assignment before the due date.” Since 2023, teachers can also “decide whether or not to require a strict due date,” Google’s Workspace Updates blog says. “By default, the assignments tool will still allow submissions after the due date,” and a teacher can “stop submissions for an assignment at any point.” If the due date is close, unsubmit only when you can turn the work in again in time.

Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a desktop app for Canvas and other course platforms, from El Dorado Ignition LLC. It doesn’t work with Google Classroom, so it can’t unsubmit or turn in Classroom work. On Canvas there is no Unsubmit button at all (can you unsubmit on Canvas?). The Google Classroom grade calculator linked above is free and doesn’t need an account.
