What is the difference between Mark as done and Turn in on Google Classroom?

Both change the assignment’s status to Turned in. Turn in hands your teacher the files you attached or created under Your work, while Mark as done is the button for an assignment with nothing attached, so no file goes with it. Google records either one as late after the due date, and you can unsubmit either one.

When do you see Mark as done instead of Turn in?

When there is nothing attached under Your work, in our reading of Google’s steps. Google’s own rule is short: “Depending on the type of assignment and attachments, you’ll find Turn in or Mark as Done.” Its step lists show the pattern. The Turn in steps begin under Your work, where you “click Add or create” and pick a Drive file, link or file, or start a new Doc, Slides, Sheets or Drawings file. The Mark as done steps have no attachment step at all: you open the assignment, add a private comment if you want, and “Click Mark as done and confirm.”

Quizzes vary by device. On a computer, submitting the form can finish the job by itself: “If the form is the only work for the assignment, the status of the assignment changes to Turned in.” In the Android app, Google’s steps have you submit the quiz and then tap Mark as done. In the iPhone and iPad app, you tap Turn in.

How do you turn in an assignment on Google Classroom?

Attach or create your work under Your work, then click Turn In. Google’s steps on a computer:

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and sign in with your school or personal Google Account.
  2. Open the class, click Classwork, click the assignment, then View instructions.
  3. Under Your work, click Add or create. Choose Google Drive, Link or File, or create a new Docs, Slides, Sheets or Drawings file.
  4. Optional: remove an attachment you don’t want, or add a private comment for your teacher.
  5. Click Turn In and confirm. “The status of the assignment changes to Turned in.”

In the Android or iPhone app, open the assignment, tap Expand on the Your work card, add your work, and tap Turn In. If the button fails, Google’s advice is direct: “If you get an error message when you click Turn in, let your instructor know.” If a class is missing from your Classes page, check that you signed in with the account you joined it with (leaving and rejoining a class).

How do you turn in a Google Doc on Google Classroom?

It depends on where the Doc came from.

  • A Doc you made. Under Your work, click Add or create, then Google Drive, select the file and click Add. To start a new one, choose Docs: “A new file attaches to your work and opens.”
  • A Doc your teacher assigned. “If your teacher attached a document with your name in the title, it’s your personal copy to review and edit.” Open it from the assignment, do the work, and “On the document or in Classroom, click Turn in and confirm.” Your teacher can review your progress before you turn it in.

Once you turn it in, Google says “only the teacher can see and edit your work” in a Docs, Sheets or Slides file. You get edit access back when the teacher returns the assignment. To start an assigned Doc over, Google’s steps are to unsubmit, click Remove next to the document, click Make A Copy, and turn the new copy in before the due date.

How do you mark an assignment as done on Google Classroom?

  1. Open the class, click Classwork, click the assignment, then View instructions.
  2. Optional: under Private comments, type a note for your teacher and click Post.
  3. Click Mark as done and confirm. The status changes to Turned in.

If the assignment asks for a file, attach it first, and the button you need becomes Turn in. A private comment is the place to say where the work is, for example if you handed it in on paper.

Can you unsubmit after you mark as done or turn in?

Yes. Google says: “Want to make changes to an assignment that you already turned in? Just unsubmit the work, make the changes, and turn it in again.” Open the assignment, click Unsubmit and confirm. Google’s full steps are in how to unsubmit in Google Classroom. Schoology works differently: there, only Google Drive and OneDrive Assignments app work has an Unsubmit button (can you unsubmit on Schoology?).

Watch the clock when you do. “Any assignment turned in or marked done after the due date is marked late, even if you previously submitted the work before the due date.” Unsubmitting on-time work and turning it back in after the deadline makes it late. While it is unsubmitted, your teacher’s Assigned list includes it, since Google defines Assigned as “Work that students have to turn in, including missing or unsubmitted work.” Teachers can also see “how many times a student has submitted an assignment” in its grade and submission history.

Can you turn in work on Google Classroom after the due date?

Usually, and it is recorded as late. Google’s Find your Classwork page says “Your teacher sets the late-work policies for your class. However, Classroom doesn’t prevent you from turning in work after the due date.” The late mark is exact to the minute: “if work is due at 9:00 AM, turn it in by 8:59 AM.” Work that isn’t turned in by then shows as Missing (what Missing means in Google Classroom).

A teacher can close an assignment, though. Google added an option in July 2023 that lets teachers “stop accepting submissions for an assignment past the due date,” or stop submissions “at any point.” By default, late submissions are still allowed. Google’s Turn in page also says “You can only submit an assignment before the due date,” so don’t count on a late turn-in without checking. If the button is gone after the deadline, ask your teacher.
