Silent Student FAQ

Yes. Silent Student is real, working software made by El Dorado Ignition LLC, a Wyoming company, and you can watch it work on the live demo before you pay. It is in public beta, and no independent reviews or tests of it have been published yet; the full answer lists what you can check.

On the technical side, your school password stays on your computer and is never sent to our servers; the question text the app needs answered goes to our backend and its AI model providers (Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, Z.ai, DeepSeek and xAI), diagnostics (including screenshots on some platforms) are part of using it, and de-identified data, with personal identifiers removed, may be sold or licensed to other companies (personal information never is). The beta installers are self-signed on Mac and unsigned on Windows, so your computer warns you the first time you open one. Whether you may use it is set by your school and instructor, so check their rules; details are on the security page.

Not for general signups. There is no free plan, and new accounts start a paid monthly plan; the only free trial is a 7-day limited one that comes with an eligible promo code (Terms, section 4). You can watch it work on the live demo first, and if a problem on our side stops it working and we can’t fix it within 3 days, our money-back guarantee refunds that payment (request within 30 days of your first payment, before you cancel; conditions apply). Silent Student is a desktop app for Mac and Windows, made by El Dorado Ignition LLC, that works through a student's Canvas assignments (quizzes, essays, discussions and file uploads) and the homework platforms Canvas courses open, such as WebAssign, Cengage MindTap, McGraw Hill Connect and SmartBook, Pearson MyLab and Macmillan Achieve. It also works with Apex Learning, Packback and myBusinessCourse; see every platform.

An extension runs inside the browser you already use, with permission over the sites it runs on, and it generally only acts on Canvas quiz pages. Silent Student is a standalone desktop app that starts its own Chromium browser with its own profile — your everyday browser, its saved passwords and its logged-in sessions are never read or modified. The trade is that it doesn't inherit your Canvas session, so you sign in once inside the app. Canvas quiz extensions compared. Download the build for your operating system. The macOS public beta is self-signed and not Apple-notarized; after trying to open it once, use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. If macOS says the app isn’t supported on this Mac, you have an Intel Mac. Request Intel access. The Windows public beta is unsigned; see why SmartScreen warns. Then sign in with your Canvas credentials and sync your courses. On a first run the app also downloads the browser it drives, so allow a few minutes on a slow connection before setup finishes.

The Windows public beta of Silent Student is unsigned, so SmartScreen has no established reputation for it. Microsoft’s SmartScreen overview says that when a file, app or certificate has no reputation, “the item is marked as a higher risk and presents a warning to the user.” To continue, choose More info, then Run anyway. On a school-managed PC, or with Smart App Control on, the installer may be blocked outright; use a personal computer instead of turning off a managed security policy. Your normal Canvas username and password — the same ones you use to log into your school's Canvas portal. Silent Student signs into Canvas the same way you do, through your school's login page. It supports direct login, SSO (Okta, ClassLink, Clever), and CAS authentication.

On Canvas, essays, discussion posts and file uploads are always drafted first — the bot writes, then waits for you to approve, edit, or regenerate. Quizzes it answers and submits, except graded single-attempt untimed quizzes, which stop for your review first; a held quiz auto-submits when its review window runs out, as long as the bot is still running and not paused — if it is stopped or the machine is asleep, the hold waits for you and Canvas's own deadline applies. External courseware works differently: Packback posts are published directly. Packback also checks posts for AI-written text, by its own account (does Packback detect AI?). Whether the homework platform itself submits at the deadline is a separate rule: see does WebAssign automatically submit and does Cengage automatically submit.

WebAssign gets equation-editor support with derivatives, integrals, matrices, and chemical notation (H₂O, Na⁺), and Cengage homework reached through Canvas handles ChemPad formulas. Each sub-question is submitted on its own button and the result read back, and a wrong answer is retried a bounded number of times.

Yes. The Apex Learning solver works with the Kuiper player: it answers quizzes and computer-scored tests in course order and submits each one, and it clicks through study, reading and practice activities page by page until Apex marks them complete. Its quiz solver handles multiple choice and multi-select only. Apex is mostly used in high school; Silent Student is built mainly for college Canvas courses. On Canvas it drafts them from the instructions and rubric, then waits for you to approve, edit or regenerate the draft. Drafts are edited toward plain wording and, if you add a few of your own writing samples, toward the way you already write. Quotations, citations, formulae and code are left as they are. Silent Student makes no promise about AI detectors or any other check your school runs, and you remain responsible for your institution’s academic-integrity policy.

Yes — leave the laptop open. While there is work in the queue, Silent Student holds your computer awake so it won't doze off mid-assignment, works through the queue in due-date order, and stops when the queue is empty.

Two things it can't do: wake a computer that has already gone to sleep, and stop a closing lid from sleeping the machine. So leave the lid up and stay on power, and check your grades in the morning. Clamshell mode works too, but only if your own setup already keeps the machine awake with the lid shut.

No. Quizzes behind Respondus LockDown Browser, Proctorio or Honorlock are recognised and left alone, not attempted. Take those yourself. Whether a platform uses a lockdown browser at all varies: see does IXL have a lockdown browser and is MindTap proctored.

Silent Student does not hide, fake or change anything Canvas records. It signs in as you in its own browser window, so its work shows up in Canvas as activity on your account. For Classic Quizzes, Instructure’s quiz-log guide says Quiz Log Auditing “is currently a course opt-in feature,” and the log shows each answer and a “Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page” entry when a student navigates away. Instructure adds that quiz logs “should not be used to validate academic integrity or identify occurrences of cheating.” Whether you may use Silent Student is set by your school and instructor, so check their rules. Yes. On the company’s own benchmark it got 156 of 164 graded answers right (95%) on seven homework replicas the company built, which are not the real sites. Platforms without a dedicated solver run on a general screen-reading agent, which is less predictable. No plan promises a grade; the run log shows what it did.

The question text and page content go to Silent Student’s backend, which passes them to AI model providers: currently Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, Z.ai, DeepSeek and xAI, directly or through OpenRouter. Plus and Pro add the advanced pro model.

Silent Student is built for Canvas LMS by Instructure. It also works with D2L Brightspace (eCampus), Moodle and Blackboard Learn Ultra. On Moodle it takes quizzes and hands in assignment and forum work.

Canvas is the hub. Every assignment that links out is followed to the tool it lives in and worked there. Anything not on the board goes to our own Vision agent, which works any tool by looking at the screen.
