How is a Canvas quiz extension different from a desktop app?
A Canvas quiz extension is code that Chrome (or Firefox) loads into the page you have open. It reads the question in that tab and either shows you an answer or fills it into the field, inside the same browser profile that holds your other tabs and signed-in sessions. You open the quiz, you move through it, and you submit.
A desktop agent such as Silent Student is a separate app. It starts its own Chromium browser with its own profile, signs in to your Canvas with the login you saved on your computer, opens the assignment itself, works it and presses submit. Nothing is installed into your everyday browser, and it can follow a Canvas link out to WebAssign, MindTap, Connect, MyLab or Achieve.
Can Canvas detect Chrome extensions?
Instructure’s guides to the Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes logs do not mention browser extensions. What Canvas records is quiz activity. In Classic Quizzes, where the course turns on Quiz Log Auditing (“a course opt-in feature”), the log shows each answer and a “Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page” entry when a student closes the tab, opens a new one or goes to another program. The New Quizzes log lists each event in an attempt, including stopping and resuming, and may show details about the student’s computer. Instructure says quiz logs “should not be used to validate academic integrity or identify occurrences of cheating.” Silent Student does not hide or change any of this, and your course’s rules apply.
Proctoring is a separate layer. Respondus describes LockDown Browser as “a custom browser that locks down the testing environment” in which students cannot “visit other websites during an online exam,” and four of the extensions above say on their own pages that they do not run inside it.

What each kind is good at
Extensions are the lighter, cheaper choice. Several have free daily allowances, they run on a Chromebook, and you stay on the page and decide every answer. Most act on one question or one page at a time and leave submitting to you; Canvas Pilot, a userscript, says it can run hands-off. Phone solvers and desktop agents are compared with extensions in homework automation apps.
A desktop agent fits when the problem is a whole courseload: quizzes, Canvas essays, discussion posts and file uploads (held for your approval), and the courseware Canvas opens. It costs more, has no free plan here, needs a Mac or Windows computer, and holds your school login on that computer. Read how Silent Student handles your data.
What none of them do
None of these tools is for proctored exams. Canvas Quiz Solver’s, FastSolve’s, SnapGPT’s and CanvasPass’s own pages say they do not run inside Respondus LockDown Browser, and Silent Student does not take proctored exams. Whether AI help is allowed on a given assignment is up to your course, so check its rules first.
What other Chrome extensions work with Canvas?
Many Canvas Chrome extensions are not quiz tools. BetterCampus (formerly BetterCanvas) adds dark mode, themes, custom dashboards, a GPA calculator and better to-do lists; BetterCampus’s store listing shows 2,000,000 users and 4.1 from 4.6K ratings. Tasks for Canvas, from the same publisher, adds a to-do sidebar with weekly progress rings and now also covers Blackboard and D2L Brightspace; the Tasks for Canvas listing shows 1,000,000 users and 3.2 from 702 ratings. Both listings say they are not affiliated with Instructure, and neither describes answering quiz questions (checked October 20, 2026).

How this table was made
On October 19, 2026 we read each tool’s own website and its Chrome Web Store listing (Canvas Pilot has none) and copied the facts into the table with the date. On October 20, 2026 we added Solvely and Mindko the same way and re-checked Apex Vision AI and Answerly AI. We did not install or run the other tools on a live quiz, and we collected no reviews. Where a vendor’s site shows a different rating from its store listing, we quote the listing. Prices, ratings and features change, so check the linked source before you pay. The Silent Student row rests on our own benchmark, run on replica assignments we built, not on real student accounts. On October 20, 2026 we also read Instructure’s quiz-log guides, Respondus’s LockDown Browser page and the BetterCampus and Tasks for Canvas store listings for the sections above.

Which is better for Canvas, Canvas Quiz Solver or Silent Student?
It depends on the job. Canvas Quiz Solver is a Chrome extension that shows an answer under each Canvas quiz question, with limited free answers, then $14.99 a month (canvasquiz.com, checked October 19, 2026). Silent Student is a Mac and Windows desktop app that works and submits whole Canvas assignments and the courseware Canvas opens, for $11.99, $24.99 or $49.99 a month (pricing), with no free plan. Can Canvas see when you switch tabs during a quiz?
In Classic Quizzes, yes, where Quiz Log Auditing is on. Instructure’s guide says the log shows “Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page” when a student closes the browser tab, opens a new tab or goes to a different program, and “Resumed” when they come back. The New Quizzes log also includes moments of stopping and resuming the quiz. Instructure keeps quiz logs for six months. Silent Student works in its own browser and does not hide or change these records.
Does Silent Student hide tab switching or quiz activity?
No. It is not a cloaking tool. It works the assignment in its own browser under your Canvas login, and your submissions show in Canvas as yours.
What is the best AI extension for Canvas quizzes?
We don’t rank them, and we make one of the tools here. The table shows what each one says it does, what it costs and how its store listing is rated. Five of them (Canvas Quiz Solver, Answerly AI, CanvasPass, Wizard and Mindko) advertise that they can’t be detected; we haven’t tested that, Silent Student makes no such claim, and your course’s rules apply either way.
Do Canvas quiz extensions work in New Quizzes?
Canvas Quiz Solver, CanvasPass, Answerly AI, FastSolve and SnapGPT say they work on Classic and New Quizzes; FastSolve does not auto-fill New Quizzes categorization or hot-spot questions. Apex Vision AI, QuizSolverAI, Wizard, Campus AI, Canvas Pilot, Solvely and Mindko do not say (checked October 19, 2026 and October 20, 2026). Silent Student works both in its own browser.
Is Silent Student better than a Canvas quiz extension?
They do different jobs. An extension is the cheaper, lighter choice if you want an answer shown or filled on the quiz page you have open and you will submit it yourself; several have free daily allowances. Silent Student fits if you want whole assignments worked and submitted, including Canvas essays, discussions and the courseware Canvas opens, from a Mac or Windows computer. It costs more, has no free plan, and signs in to your school account from your own machine.
Which Canvas quiz extension should I use?
We don’t rank them, and we did not run them on a live quiz. Compare what the table shows: which sites each one works on, whether it fills answers or only shows them, its daily limits and price, and how many people rated its store listing. Check your course’s rules first.
Does Silent Student install anything into my Chrome?
No. There is no extension and nothing is added to your Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox. The app starts its own Chromium browser with its own profile. Your everyday browser, its saved passwords, and its logged-in sessions are never read or modified.
Do these tools work in Respondus LockDown Browser?
No. Canvas Quiz Solver’s, FastSolve’s, SnapGPT’s and CanvasPass’s own pages say they do not run inside LockDown Browser, and Silent Student does not take proctored exams.
Why do store ratings differ from the vendors’ own sites?
We quote each Chrome Web Store listing, not the vendor’s site. For example (checked October 19, 2026), Canvas Quiz Solver’s site shows 4.9 from 96 ratings while its store listing shows 4.5 from 87, and Wizard’s site shows 4.8 from 1,067 reviews while its store listing shows 3.0 from 9.
