Why is there no Top Hat answer key?
Because the answers belong to your instructor’s course, and Top Hat’s rules keep them there. Three things in Top Hat’s own pages explain it:
- Your instructor builds the questions. Top Hat’s test builder adds questions three ways: “Create a ‘New Question’, ‘Import from Course’, or add ‘From Test Bank’.” It can also “Randomize the order of the questions so each student will view the questions in a different order.”
- Posting answers breaks the agreement. Top Hat’s User Agreement says you agree not to “post Licensed Content or answers to any homework or test questions related to the Licensed Content to newsgroups, mail lists, electronic bulletin boards, homework sites, content aggregators, file storage services, or any other on-line location.”
- Some work has no key. Long Answer “is manually graded by your instructor or TA and is not auto-scored,” and a question marked “No Correct Answer” only needs a submission to record your participation.
So a set of “Top Hat answers” from another website was built for someone else’s course. That part is our inference. Sharing answers online is against Top Hat’s own rule above.
Where does Top Hat show you the correct answers?
In a few places, all controlled by your course settings:
| Where | What Top Hat says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pages in Review mode | “Assigned for reading and revision only.” “Practice submissions are allowed but not saved.” “Allows you to view correct answers/responses for study purposes.” | Student: Pages |
| Answer Feedback | “If Answer Feedback is enabled, you may see hints after failed attempts or explanations after correct answers.” | Student: Questions |
| Handed-back tests | “If a test is ‘Handed Back,’ it reappears in your Assigned tab, allowing you to review your specific responses against the correct answers.” | Student: Tests |
| Your Gradebook | “You can see the title, your specific response, and the total points earned.” | Student: The Gradebook |
Homework mode is the graded one. Top Hat says “grades are only recorded for items assigned in Homework mode or presented live during class.” Review mode is where answers are open for study, and nothing you submit there is saved.
Who has the Top Hat answer key?
Your instructor. Instructors write questions, import them from the course or add them “From Test Bank,” and they choose what you see afterwards. Top Hat’s educator guide says that before releasing results, an instructor “can choose to show only the final score or allow students to see full question details and their specific answers.” For tests they plan to reuse, Top Hat suggests disabling “Test details” so students can see their grade “without having a permanent digital record of the questions.”
Top Hat textbook pages work the same way. Top Hat says a page “can contain reading material, images, interactive questions, discussions, or embedded videos,” and the questions inside follow the page’s mode: graded in Homework, open for study in Review.
What does Top Hat record?
From Top Hat’s student and educator guides and its User Agreement:
| What is recorded | What Top Hat says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Grades and submissions | The Gradebook “records all of your grades and submissions for your course, including Attendance, Questions, Exams, Quizzes, or any other content assigned for grades.” | Student: The Gradebook |
| Correctness and participation | Items can be weighted for “Correctness (accuracy) and Participation (effort).” | Student: The Gradebook |
| Unsubmitted work | Nothing. “Top Hat does not save drafts; ensure you submit your answer before closing the page.” | Student: Pages |
| Monitored tests | A monitored test “tracks the following activities to ensure academic integrity”: screenshots, page searches, refreshes and notifications, each of which locks you out. Instructors watch a Proctor Report “for live monitoring.” | Student: Tests; Educator: Tests |
| Breaches of the rules | Top Hat says it may “report any breach of this Agreement to your Institution.” | User Agreement |
How can you get honest help on Top Hat?
- Study from pages in Review mode, where Top Hat lets you “view correct answers/responses for study purposes.”
- Read the hints after a failed attempt when your instructor has Answer Feedback on.
- Ask Top Hat Ace. Top Hat calls it “an AI-powered assistant that helps you understand concepts, get examples, and quiz yourself,” and on a page you can highlight text to “simplify language, provide examples, ‘Quiz Me’ on the selected text, or ask your own questions.”
- Review a handed-back test against the correct answers before the next one.
- Read your instructor’s feedback in the Gradebook. If a grade looks wrong or is missing, send a grade inquiry; Top Hat says “final grading decisions remain with your instructor.”
Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a desktop app for Mac and Windows from El Dorado Ignition LLC. It has no Top Hat answer key and doesn’t make one. On Top Hat it uses its general vision agent, not a solver written for Top Hat: it opens Top Hat from your Canvas course and answers questions on Homework-mode pages one at a time, pressing Submit and reading each answer back.
- Each answer it submits is recorded in your Gradebook as your submission. It does not hide or fake any activity on Top Hat.
- It does not answer live lecture questions, submit attendance, post to discussions or take Top Hat Tests, monitored or not. Take those yourself.
- Long answer, file, video and scenario questions stay yours. Math, chemistry and graph response questions are its weakest type, so check them.
- Our published benchmark has no Top Hat replica, so we publish no Top Hat accuracy figure, and its answers can be wrong. Plans are $11.99, $24.99 or $49.99 a month, with no free plan. It runs on a Mac with Apple Silicon (macOS 13 or later) or a 64-bit PC on Windows 10 or later.
Top Hat’s User Agreement. Top Hat’s User Agreement, updated as of July 7, 2026, says you agree not to “inquire about, engage in, or aid or assist anyone with any form of academic dishonesty or violations of academic integrity policies,” including “completing assignments or projects, writing papers or essays, or taking (or helping take) quizzes or examinations on someone’s behalf.” Top Hat “has the right to suspend or terminate your License” if you breach those obligations, and it may “report any breach of this Agreement to your Institution.” In our reading, that reaches Silent Student. We are not lawyers, so read the agreement yourself. Your school’s academic-integrity policy applies too, and under Silent Student’s Terms (section 5) you are responsible for both.

Questions people ask
Is there a Top Hat answer key PDF?
No public one. Correct answers sit in your instructor’s course, and Top Hat’s User Agreement bars posting answers to its homework or test questions online. You see correct answers only where your course allows it.
How do you see correct answers in Top Hat?
Open a page in Review mode, which Top Hat says “allows you to view correct answers/responses for study purposes,” or review a test after your instructor hands it back. With Answer Feedback on, you may see hints after a failed attempt.
Are Top Hat textbook questions graded?
Only in Homework mode. Top Hat says grades are recorded “for items assigned in Homework mode or presented live during class,” and in Review mode “Practice submissions are allowed but not saved.”
Can your professor see your Top Hat answers?
Yes. The Gradebook records your submissions, including your specific response and the points earned, and your instructor decides how much of your test results you see.
What does a monitored Top Hat test track?
Top Hat says a monitored test tracks screenshots, page searches, browser refreshes and notifications, and each of these locks you out until your professor unlocks you.
Does Silent Student give you Top Hat answers?
No. It has no Top Hat answer key. Its agent answers Homework-mode questions on your screen in your account, and Top Hat records them as your submissions. Top Hat’s User Agreement bars completing assignments on someone’s behalf, so read it first.

How this guide was made. We read each Top Hat page listed above on October 20, 2026 and quote them directly. The point that an outside answer set was built for someone else’s course is our inference from how Top Hat says instructors build questions. We wrote the guide with AI assistance and checked each quote against its source.
