What should I know before I download Silent Student?
Is Silent Student a Chrome extension or a desktop app?
It is a desktop app. You install Silent Student on a Mac or a Windows PC, and it starts its own Chromium browser with its own profile, signs in to Canvas there and opens each assignment itself. Nothing is added to your personal Chrome, so it is not a Chrome extension. That built-in browser is why the app needs about 500 MB of disk space. Silent Student doesn’t hide its activity: anything it submits shows in Canvas under your login.
Who makes Silent Student?
El Dorado Ignition LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company. It builds the app, runs silentstudent.com and publishes the installers (who makes Silent Student). Silent Student is not affiliated with Instructure or any homework platform.
What does Silent Student cost to download?
The download comes with a plan: Base at $11.99 a month, Plus at $24.99 or Pro at $49.99, billed monthly. There is no free plan. The live demo is free and needs no download. Compare Silent Student plans and prices.
Which Macs does Silent Student run on?
Macs with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 13 Ventura or later. Intel Macs: available to members by request. To check your Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.
Will Silent Student run on my laptop or PC, such as an Acer?
Yes, if it is a 64-bit PC or laptop on Windows 10 or later, or a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 13 Ventura or later. The brand doesn’t matter: Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo laptops all qualify, and so does any Apple Silicon MacBook. Intel Macs: available to members by request. School-managed PCs or Smart App Control may block the installer. Chromebooks, iPads and phones are not supported.
Where is the Silent Student download link?
On this page, silentstudent.com/download, and nowhere else. The Mac and Windows buttons unlock after you create an account and choose a plan. Signed-in members with an active plan get the installer from the same buttons.
Who do I ask for help installing it?
Email support@silentstudent.com or call or text (307) 228-0145. Do not send your school password. The steps below cover the warnings Mac and Windows show the first time.
Why does my computer warn me when I open it?
Your computer may ask you to review this beta before opening it. Follow the steps that match the message on your screen.
Mac: choose Open Anyway
Open the DMG, drag Silent Student to Applications, then try to open it once. If macOS blocks it, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, choose Open Anyway, authenticate if asked, and choose Open.
This beta is self-signed and is not notarized by Apple. If your existing app uses any older signing identity — including a prior Developer ID or an ad-hoc signature — install this DMG manually once. Releases approved with the same SilentStudent Beta certificate are designed to update in place after that migration.
Windows: setup may open directly
Run the downloaded installer. If Microsoft Defender SmartScreen shows Windows protected your PC or Unknown publisher, choose More info, then Run anyway.
This Windows beta is unsigned, so Windows may show a publisher-reputation warning. Setup may also start directly. Watch the animated guide for the download, optional warning, installation, and sign-in screens.
Upgrading from an older Windows install? Run the current installer manually once. Later updates are designed to install automatically.
Smart App Control or an organization-managed PC may block the installer completely; use a personal device or ask your administrator instead of disabling a managed security policy.
Update integrity: in-app updates are installed only after Silent Student verifies the backend’s Ed25519 release approval and the downloaded file’s SHA-512 digest. The OS warning above is about publisher identity for this beta installer; it does not remove those update checks.
What do I do after installing it?

Open and sign in
Sign in with your Silent Student account, then connect Canvas inside the app. The app uses its own browser — your personal Chrome stays untouched.

One click pulls every assignment, quiz, discussion, and external tool link from Canvas and sorts them by due date.

Pick what to run
A single assignment, an entire course, or everything at once. Assignments route to the right solver automatically: Canvas native, WebAssign, Apex, Cengage, Packback, SmartBook, or myBusinessCourse.

Review drafts
Canvas essays, discussion posts and file uploads wait for your approval before they submit. Packback posts publish directly, and work on courseware such as WebAssign is submitted by the app. Quizzes submit on their own, except graded single-attempt untimed ones, which stop for your review first. Which platforms does it work with?
Opened from your Canvas course, with nothing extra to configure. The first row has dedicated solvers; the second runs on the general screen-reading agent, which is less predictable.

Is the Silent Student download free?
No. Downloads are for members with an active plan, from $11.99 a month. There is no free plan, and no free trial for general signups; the only trial comes with an eligible promo code (Terms, section 4). You can watch the app work on the live demo without downloading anything.
Is the Silent Student installer safe to open?
Download it only from silentstudent.com/download. The public beta installers are self-signed on Mac (not notarized by Apple) and unsigned on Windows, so your computer shows a warning the first time you open them. After that, every in-app update must carry Silent Student’s Ed25519 release signature and match its published SHA-512 digest before it installs. More on the security page.
Why does my Mac block Silent Student the first time?
Because the beta is self-signed and not notarized by Apple, macOS stops the first open. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, choose Open Anyway, authenticate if asked, and choose Open.
Why does Windows say “Windows protected your PC”?
The Windows beta is unsigned, so Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may show a publisher-reputation warning. Choose More info, then Run anyway. On a school-managed PC or with Smart App Control on, the installer may be blocked completely; use a personal device instead of turning off a managed security policy.
Is there a Silent Student app for phones, iPad or Chromebook?
No. Silent Student is only a desktop app, for a Mac with Apple Silicon on macOS 13 or later or a 64-bit Windows 10 or later PC. There is no iPhone, Android, iPad or Chromebook version. Without a Mac or PC you can still watch it work in the free live demo, with no download.
How much disk space and internet does it need?
About 500 MB of disk space, which includes the Chromium browser it drives; on a first run the app downloads that browser, so allow a few minutes on a slow connection. It needs a stable internet connection while assignments run.
How do updates work?
Updates install from inside the app. Each one is installed only after Silent Student verifies the backend’s Ed25519 release approval and the downloaded file’s SHA-512 digest. If you are upgrading from an older install with a different signing identity, install the current version manually once.
