Does Cengage automatically submit?
Mostly, for MindTap. Cengage’s Automatic Submission help page says: “Most activities are automatically submitted if they are in progress when the due date passes, but some are not. Be sure to submit your activity to receive a grade.” The exceptions it lists include Bongo, Coding Labs, InQuizitive (IQ), Learning Labs, MindTap World Language, Practice Labs and manually graded activities.
WebAssign works the other way. Its student guide says “Your answers are automatically saved. Your answers are not automatically submitted for untimed assignments. If you are working on a timed assignment and run out of time, your answers are submitted for you.” Each submission also uses one of your allowed submissions. Does Check My Work take off points on Cengage?
No penalty is documented. Check My Work tells you whether your answers are right before you submit, and Cengage’s MindTap help describes no points penalty for using it. In CNOWv2 activities, Cengage’s student steps say that if it is available, “click Check My Work to check if your answers are correct before moving on.” Whether you get the button is your instructor’s choice: MindTap’s activity settings include “Allow Students to Check Answers,” which Cengage marks “Recommended for homework and practice activities.” Check My Work is not an answer key, though. Cengage files the MindTap answer key under instructor help.
Submissions are what count. In the same settings, instructors choose “How many times the student can submit a question (1-10)” and whether the “Best Attempt (recommended) or Last Attempt” counts for the activity score. Settings templates also have a grading policy that can use “the student’s best attempt (recommended), last attempt, or an average of all attempts.” Under an average, a weaker attempt pulls your score down. Aplia works differently again: Grade It Now grades the question, Try Another Version gives you a new version after grading, and the scoring option below decides whether a wrong attempt stays in your average. If your syllabus mentions a penalty, your instructor’s rule is the one that applies.
Does the MindTap activity count toward your grade?
Before you automate anything, check that it counts. Cengage’s grade sync help says: “MindTap only syncs assignment scores that count toward student grades. Hidden and practice assignment scores are not synced.” A Practice tile produces a score inside MindTap and nothing in Canvas. Cengage adds that “if an activity is not marked as either Practice or Counts Towards Grade, it does not count toward the final grade” (Cengage); reading and web link activities are in that group.
The same page sets the timing: grades “should take 5 minutes or less”, and if scores have not synced after an hour, something is wrong. Do not resubmit a limited-attempt activity at minute three; check the Progress app first.
Does a wrong Aplia attempt hurt your grade?
Econ, accounting, finance and stats courses often run on Aplia, with multi-part problems and more than one attempt. Cengage lets instructors choose how Grade It Now questions with several attempts are scored (Cengage instructor help, standard MindTap):

Under Average, any wrong answer, typed by you or by a tool, stays in your grade, and Silent Student does not hold Cengage work for review before it submits. That is the case to work by hand, or to check in the Progress app straight away while attempts remain. Cengage also warns instructors that changing the option mid-course “will affect existing scores”. If you cannot tell which option your course uses, ask.
Is MindTap proctored? Does it use your webcam?
Some activities are. Cengage’s MindTap student help lists LockDown Browser Activities, Respondus Monitor Activities and “Take Proctored Exams Through Your LMS” among the activity types, next to ordinary readings and problem sets. The same learning path can hold your nightly homework and a monitored exam. Silent Student does not take proctored, LockDown Browser or Respondus Monitor activities.
Respondus Monitor activities use your webcam. Cengage’s Respondus Monitor help says Monitor “records you as you take your assignment and flags possible suspicious activity for your instructor to review,” and its steps include “Follow the instructions to configure your webcam.” Those assignments run in LockDown Browser, where you cannot “Print, screen-capture, or copy anything in assignments.” Respondus itself calls Monitor “a fully automated proctoring solution.” For exams given through your LMS, Cengage’s proctored exam help says the proctoring service is a third party and that such services “often block you from opening any new tabs while taking your test.” Bongo is the other activity with a camera: Cengage describes it as a tool for “live or recorded presentations to instructors and classmates.” Silent Student does not do Bongo activities either.
Mastery Training is worth a separate word. Cengage says it “refreshes your memory for each item just as it’s about to fade by tracking your performance, measuring pace, response time, and accuracy,” and that these assignments “require each student to follow a schedule and review core concepts in small chunks over time” (Cengage). It is built to be done over days, and it is one of the better study tools in MindTap; we suggest doing it yourself.
Does Cengage MindTap track time, tabs or copy and paste?
MindTap tracks your time in the course, your logins and the activities you open. Its “Review Your Progress” help lists “The rating of your engagement with the course in levels of low, medium, and high,” “The amount of time you have spent on the course page,” “The number of times you have logged onto the course” and “The number of activities you have accessed in the course.”
Instructors see more. Cengage’s instructor analytics help describes Engagement Level, Time in Course and % Activities Accessed charts that plot each student against their scores, and says “Engagement is calculated based on a combination of factors including time in course, activities opened, highlights made in the textbook, and searches.” It also says “Analytics reports include data from Google Analytics and other tools.”
The Cengage help pages we checked do not describe tab-switch or copy-and-paste tracking for ordinary homework. That does not mean nothing is logged, and proctored activities are stricter: LockDown Browser blocks copying, and LMS proctoring services often block new tabs (see above). Silent Student does not hide, disguise or fake activity; what your course allows is up to your instructor.
Can Cengage detect AI?
The MindTap help pages we checked describe no AI detector for homework problem sets, and they do not say that nothing is checked. Three things are documented. Written work can run through Turnitin: Cengage’s activity list includes Turnitin Activities and Viewing Turnitin Similarity Report. Blackboard’s SafeAssign is a similar text-matching check (does SafeAssign detect AI?). Cengage’s own AI is visible to your instructor: “Your instructor will be able to view your chat logs with the Student Assistant” (Cengage). And instructors see your time in the course and activities opened next to your scores. Your syllabus and your instructor decide what is allowed. Silent Student does not hide activity, and it has not been tested on Turnitin activities.
Why is Cengage MindTap so slow or not working?
It is either a problem on Cengage’s side or something in your browser or connection, and Cengage’s help covers both. To rule out an outage, open techcheck.cengage.com, where “the current status is shown for all Cengage learning platforms”; it “monitors basic MindTap availability from multiple locations across the United States” (MindTap is Not Responding). If MindTap is up but slow or not loading, work through these:
- Use a supported browser. Cengage’s system requirements list Chrome and Edge on Windows, Chrome and Safari on macOS, Chrome on Chrome OS, and Safari on iPad. “Other browsers and versions, such as Firefox, might also work but are not supported.”
- Turn off browser extensions. Cengage says “some non-Cengage browser extensions have been observed to interfere with accessing MindTap classes or completing assignments” (Cengage).
- Allow cookies and pop-ups for cengage.com and your LMS. A Canvas link that opens nothing is “usually caused by the browser blocking cookies and pop-up windows from the LMS domain” (Cengage).
- Check your connection and computer. Cengage recommends at least 5 Mbps of download bandwidth and 2 GB of RAM.
- Got a General Error? Cengage says it is “often caused by a timeout”; start over, and open a support ticket if it happens again (Cengage).
- Run Cengage’s browser check to see whether your browser settings are the problem.

What does the Cengage MindTap interface look like?
The Cengage MindTap interface has four main parts, according to Cengage’s Get to Know MindTap page. The dashboard is where “current and upcoming learning activities appear.” The Gradebook lets you “view your grades for activities that were recently submitted.” The MindTap toolbar is where you “access the eBook, view the glossary, and view your grades.” A navigation sidebar holds your account, purchases, other courses, support and sign-out.
Your activities sit in the Learning Path, which has two views (Cengage): Outline View “displays activities according to the structure of the textbook,” and Rolling Week View “displays activities due each week, starting with the current week.” Scores are under Progress in the toolbar. Is there an app that answers Cengage homework?
Cengage has its own AI, and it is built not to give answers. The MindTap Student Assistant help says “It will not reveal answers, but it can provide you with step-by-step help, study strategies and supplemental resources,” that “Your instructor will be able to view your chat logs with the Student Assistant,” and that it “is not available for all MindTap courses, activity types or question types.”

Cengage’s Terms of Service for its higher-education platforms (last updated November 2025) bar access “through any automated means (including use of scrapers, scripts, robots, spiders, or web crawlers)”. Does Cengage automatically submit at the due date?
Most MindTap activities that are in progress when the due date passes are submitted automatically, but some are not, including InQuizitive, Learning Labs, Bongo and manually graded activities. Untimed WebAssign assignments are not submitted for you; timed ones are when time runs out.
Does Check My Work on Cengage take off points?
Cengage’s MindTap help does not describe a points penalty for Check My Work. Your instructor decides whether the button appears and how many times you can submit each question, from 1 to 10. Attempts are what can cost you, so check your course settings or syllabus.
What does Check My Work do on Cengage?
It checks whether your answers are correct before you submit, if your instructor has turned it on (MindTap’s setting is “Allow Students to Check Answers”). Cengage’s help describes no points penalty for using it. What can cost you is the number of submissions, which is set from 1 to 10 per question.
Is MindTap proctored?

Does MindTap use your webcam?

Does Cengage track tabs or copy and paste?

Does a wrong attempt on an Aplia question hurt my grade?
It depends on a setting your instructor chose. Cengage offers three scoring options for multi-attempt Grade It Now questions: Average (every attempt counts), Do No Harm (attempts that would lower your average are not averaged in) and Keep the Highest (only your best attempt counts). Under Average a wrong attempt stays in your grade; under the other two it costs little or nothing. If you cannot tell which applies, ask your instructor.
Does Silent Student wait for my approval on Cengage work?
No. Canvas essays, discussion posts and uploads wait for approval, but MindTap, Aplia and WebAssign are worked and submitted as it goes. That is why the Aplia scoring option matters: under Average, a wrong answer stays in your grade.
Is there an app that answers Cengage homework?
