What happens when a MindTap assignment is late?

Short answer: Most MindTap activities you have started are submitted automatically when the due date passes, with no late penalty, according to Cengage’s own help. After that, your instructor decides: they can open a late period of a set number of days, with or without a percentage-point penalty, or extend your date. InQuizitive, Learning Labs and a few other types never auto-submit, so they stay unscored until you submit them. Silent Student, a desktop app not made by Cengage, works MindTap activities from Canvas in due-date order; it cannot change a deadline.

Your instructor decides. Whether late work is accepted, for how long and at what cost are settings on each activity. The activity details in your learning path show the late deadline and any penalty.

MindTap due dates and late work, in one table

MindTap is Cengage’s course platform, often opened from a Canvas module link. The rules below come from Cengage’s MindTap student and instructor help. Your instructor chooses whether late work is accepted and what it costs, so check the activity’s own details.

Due date passes while you are mid-activity“Most in-progress activities are automatically submitted when the activity is due.”No. Work auto-submitted on the original due date gets none.
InQuizitive, Learning Labs, Practice Labs and a few others“Not automatically submitted. Be sure to submit the activity to receive a grade.”Unscored until submitted
Instructor allows late submissionYou can submit within a set number of days past the due date. It “does not change the number of available submissions.”Only if your instructor turned one on
Reopening an auto-submitted activityAllowed during the late period: you “can reopen an automatically submitted activity and resubmit it for grading with late penalties.”Yes, on the resubmission
Late period ends while you are mid-activity“It is automatically submitted for grading and late penalties apply.”Yes
Credit / no credit activitySubmitted late with a 20% penalty, it “could only receive a final score of either 80% … or 0%.”Yes, from full credit

Automatic submission

Does MindTap automatically submit at the due date?

Usually, but not always. Cengage’s student help on automatic submission says: “Most activities are automatically submitted if they are in progress when the due date passes, but some are not. Be sure to submit your activity to receive a grade.”

The exceptions it lists are Advanced Hardware Simulation, Bongo, Delmar, GitHub, InQuizitive (IQ), LabConnection, Learning Labs, MindTap World Language manually graded activities, Practice Labs and S/P2. Cengage’s instructor troubleshooting page describes what happens to those: “After the due date, some student activities are unscored and shown as In Progress,” and the fix it gives instructors is to “grant affected students a brief extension so they can submit their assignment” (Cengage instructor help).

Being auto-submitted on time is not a penalty. Per the late submission help: “Activities automatically submitted on the original due date do not receive late penalties.”

Late policy

What is the MindTap late policy?

There is no single policy; each instructor sets one. Cengage’s student help says: “Your instructor can choose to accept late submissions for a designated period of time, but you might receive a late penalty to your score.” The instructor setting lets them “allow students to submit an activity within a specified number of days past the due date,” “with or without a scoring penalty.”

You can see the policy before you start. Activities set for late submission show a late-submission icon in your learning path, and the activity details show “the late submission deadline and whether a late penalty will be applied.” After you hand something in during the late period, the activity shows a different icon.

Three limits come from Cengage, not your instructor. “Submissions must be made before the end of the course even if the specified number of days extends past that date.” Activities due on the course end date and inline activities get no late window. And “late penalties do not apply to manually graded activities” (instructor help).

The math

How is a MindTap late penalty calculated?

In percentage points of the whole assignment, not of your score. Cengage’s help: “This deduction is calculated from total possible points and not earned points.” Its example: with a 10% late penalty, a student who scores 90% ends at 80%. A 10% penalty therefore costs 10 points on a 100-point scale whether you scored 95% or 55%.

Credit / no credit work has only two possible outcomes. “A credit / no credit assignment with a 20% late penalty that is submitted late could only receive a final score of either 80% (full credit minus 20%) or 0% (no credit).”

To see what a deduction does to your course grade, our weighted grade calculator takes the category weights from your syllabus.

After the due date

Can you reopen a MindTap activity after it auto-submits?

Only during a late period your instructor has set. Cengage: “During the late submission period, students can reopen an automatically submitted activity and resubmit it for grading with late penalties.” Without a late period, the auto-submitted attempt stands.

Reopening does not give you extra submissions: allowing late submissions “does not change the number of available submissions for the activity.” And if you are still working when the late period closes, “it is automatically submitted for grading and late penalties apply.”

Extensions

Can your instructor extend a MindTap due date?

Yes. Cengage’s extension help says instructors can “extend due dates for all students or grant extensions to individual students,” set a new date or shift dates forward by a number of days, and add student accommodations per activity. For an activity type that never auto-submits, an extension is the fix Cengage gives instructors.

Extensions interact with late work in two ways. If your activity already has a late period, “the late submission period begins when the extended due date expires.” And “extending or removing due dates after students have submitted late work will remove any late penalty deductions that were previously applied,” which can take up to 5 minutes to show in the gradebook.

If you are going to miss a date, ask before it passes, and say which activity. Only your instructor can change it.

Where Silent Student fits

What Silent Student does on MindTap, and where it stops

What it does

Silent Student is a desktop app for Mac and Windows, made by El Dorado Ignition LLC and not by Cengage. It opens a MindTap activity from its Canvas link, answers each part in Cengage’s own fields, including the equation editor and ChemPad, and submits it. It works your Canvas list in due-date order, which is the one thing here that helps with a late penalty: starting earlier.

How it runs on MindTap

From Canvas, MindTap runs on the general screen-reading agent, which is less predictable than a dedicated solver. The dedicated MindTap solver works through D2L Brightspace. AI can be wrong, and a part it cannot read back is reported to you instead of counted.

It works with your attempts, not around them: it cannot recover an attempt Cengage has already used.

Where it stops

  • It does not take proctored exams.
  • It cannot extend a due date, open a late period or remove a penalty.
  • Most Cengage simulations are not solved, and written-response parts are not tested.
  • Cengage’s Terms of Service for its higher-education platforms, last updated November 2025, say students may not “Access (or attempt to access) any part of the Services or Content through any automated means (including use of scrapers, scripts, robots, spiders, or web crawlers), or in any way circumvent the navigational structure or presentation of the Services”. In our reading, that reaches automated tools like Silent Student. We are not lawyers. Read the Terms yourself before you decide.
