How is a Canvas late penalty calculated?
From a percentage your instructor sets. Instructure’s guide says the policy deducts “a percentage of the total points possible on an assignment” for each day or hour late. Worked through, it takes four steps:
- Deduction per interval = the late percentage × the assignment’s points possible. At 10% per day on a 10-point assignment, that is 1 point a day.
- Intervals late, rounded up. “If a student submits a 10-point assignment 1.3 days late, the late penalty will round 1.3 days up to 2 days.” Hours round the same way.
- Penalty = intervals late × deduction, taken off the score you were awarded.
- The floor. The lowest possible grade “is the lowest score a student can receive when late policy deductions are applied,” and “any grade awarded equal to or below that percentage will not receive late policy deductions.”
Here are Instructure’s own examples, plus two more cases worked with the same rules. Every row is a 10-point assignment at 10% per day:
| Case | Awarded | Calculation | Final |
|---|---|---|---|
| On time | 10 | No deduction | 10 |
| 1.3 days late (Instructure) | 10 | Rounds to 2 days: 10 − 2 × 1 | 8 |
| 8 days late, no floor (Instructure) | 10 | 10 − 8 × 1 | 2 |
| 8 days late, 60% floor (Instructure) | 10 | 10 − 8 = 2, raised to the floor | 6 |
| 2 days late, partial credit, no floor (worked) | 7 | 7 − 2 × 1 | 5 |
| 3 days late, score below the 60% floor (worked) | 5 | 5 is below the floor of 6, so no deduction | 5 |
Two things follow from the rule. The deduction is a share of the points possible, so partial credit loses the same points per day as full credit. And hourly penalties round by the hour: at a made-up 2% per hour on a 50-point assignment, work 3 hours and 10 minutes late counts as 4 hours, which is 4 points. To see what a penalty does to your course grade, put the after-penalty score into the free Canvas grade calculator.
When does Canvas mark a submission late?
One second after the due time. Instructure’s student guide: “Submissions are tracked down to the exact second, and submitting one second late will be marked as late.” Its instructor guide gives an example: with a due time of 4:15 pm, “any student submission made at or after September 19 at 4:15:01 is marked late.” A due date with no time uses the course’s default due time, and due times entered as 12 am or 24:00 “autocorrect to 11:59pm and 23:59.”
The deduction shows up at grading. “The late policy will be applied to a submission when it is graded,” and turning the policy on mid-term also reaches work already graded: “Late Submission policies will affect previously graded assignments.”
What does the Late label on your Canvas Grades page mean?
That Canvas recorded your work after the due date. Instructure’s grades guide says “Late assignments display the Late icon in the Status column,” and clicking the submission name opens Submission Details, which “displays your grade, the amount deducted for the late penalty, and the final grade.”
A label alone costs nothing. Instructure’s status guide says “points are not automatically deducted for assignments with a late status”; the automatic deduction comes from the Late Submission policy. Your instructor can also change the status. Switching it to something other than Late “will remove any late penalties that had been automatically applied.” With the policy on, the instructor can also adjust the number of days late, and a status of None shows no label at all. If work was marked Missing and you then submit it, “the Missing label will be automatically replaced by the Late label.”
Can you submit on Canvas after the due date?
Usually, until the assignment closes. “You can still submit late assignments before the Available until date.” The dates on the assignment tell you which case you are in:
| The assignment shows | What it means, per Instructure |
|---|---|
| No availability dates | “The assignment is open.” Miss the due date and “you could still submit the assignment for late credit before the last day of the course.” |
| Available until [date] | “You can submit the assignment until the specified date.” An Until date with no time closes at 11:59 pm course time. |
| Not Available Until [date] | “The assignment is locked until the specified date.” |
| Closed | “The assignment cannot accept submissions.” You can still view your past submissions and comments. |
Watch midnight. If an assignment is “Available until December 15” at 12 am, Instructure says “you can access the assignment until December 14 at 11:59 pm.” Some instructors set the Until date equal to the due date, which Instructure describes as the way to accept no late submissions.
To submit late, open the assignment, click Start Assignment (or New Attempt if you already submitted once) and submit as usual. Canvas records the time and marks it late. If there is no Start Assignment button, Instructure says “your instructor may not want you to submit your assignment online or the availability date has passed.” Quizzes behave differently at the Until date: Canvas submits an open quiz when it closes, which our guide to Canvas quiz time limits and Until dates covers.
Does resubmitting after the due date make it late?
For assignments, yes, in our reading of Canvas’s code. In Instructure’s open-source Canvas code on GitHub, read October 20, 2026, each new submission records the moment you submit and clears any status your instructor set by hand, and a submission counts as late when that moment is after the due date. So an on-time first submission followed by a resubmission after the due date ends up late, and the late policy can apply when it is graded. What else a resubmission changes is in what happens when you resubmit on Canvas.
Quizzes are spelled out in Instructure’s guide: “a student who makes a new attempt after the due date has passed will receive deductions on all attempts, including attempts made before the due date.” The same guide says “The Late Submission Policy is not supported when using multiple attempts in New Quizzes.”
Your instructor sees resubmissions flagged. In the Gradebook a resubmitted assignment or quiz is marked as needing grading and is colored green by default, and the instructor can choose “Use this same grade for the resubmission.”
What doesn’t the Canvas late policy touch?
Instructure’s notes list these cases:
- Grades equal to or below the lowest possible grade.
- Submissions in closed grading periods and submissions for concluded enrollments.
- No Submission and On Paper assignments, unless the instructor adds a Late label by hand.
- Complete/Incomplete assignments.
- Any submission whose status the instructor changes to something other than Late.
Turning the policy off later doesn’t undo anything: “Disabling a Late Submission policy will not remove late penalties from previously graded assignments.”
What happens if you never submit?
That is a separate setting, the Missing Submission policy. Work is labeled missing when it is an online assignment, the due date has passed and nothing was submitted. If your instructor turned the policy on, Canvas gives missing work a set share of the points: “if the Missing submission grade is set to 20% and the assignment is worth 10 points, all missing submissions for that assignment will be awarded a grade of 2 points.” Set to 0%, it is a zero.
Submitting late turns the Missing label into Late, but the automatic score stays until your instructor grades the new work: “the new submission must be updated in the gradebook or the grade will not change.” Work inside a publisher tool follows that tool’s own rules; for one example, see MindTap due dates and late work.
Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a Mac and Windows desktop app from El Dorado Ignition LLC that works Canvas quizzes, essays, discussion posts and file uploads in due-date order, with essays, discussions and uploads held for your approval. It can’t change a due date, an Until date or a late penalty; only your instructor can. Plans are $11.99, $24.99 or $49.99 a month, with no free plan, and the grade calculator linked above is free.

Questions people ask
How much does Canvas take off for late work?
Whatever your instructor set. The Late Submission policy deducts a percentage of the assignment’s points possible for each day or hour late, down to a lowest possible grade.
Does Canvas round partial days up for a late penalty?
Yes. Canvas rounds the days or hours late up to the next whole number, so 1.3 days late counts as 2 days.
Does Canvas automatically take points off late work?
Only if your instructor turned on the Late Submission policy. Otherwise late work gets a Late label, and Instructure says points are not automatically deducted for a late status.
Can you still submit on Canvas after the due date?
Yes, until the Available until date, or until the course ends if there is no Until date. If the assignment says Closed, it can’t accept submissions.
Will resubmitting after the due date make my assignment late?
In Canvas’s open-source code, a new submission takes the time you resubmit, so a resubmission after the due date counts as late. For quizzes with a late policy, Instructure says a late attempt brings deductions on all attempts.
Can my instructor remove a Canvas late penalty?
Yes. Changing the submission’s status to something other than Late removes the automatic penalty. With the policy on, the instructor can also adjust the number of days late.
Why do I still have a zero after turning in a missing assignment?
If a Missing Submission policy gave the work an automatic grade, Instructure says the grade doesn’t change until your instructor grades the new submission.

How this guide was made. We read each Instructure guide listed above on October 20, 2026 and quote them directly, and we read the two listed files in Instructure’s public canvas-lms repository the same day for the resubmission rule. The partial-credit, at-the-floor and hourly rows are our own examples, calculated with Instructure’s published rules. We wrote the guide with AI assistance and checked each quote against its source.
