What happens when a Canvas quiz time limit runs out?
Short answer: Canvas submits the quiz for you. In Classic Quizzes a box says your time has expired and the quiz submits after a ten-second countdown; in New Quizzes the attempt ends when the countdown hits zero. Leaving the page does not pause the timer, and the Until date beats the time limit: if the quiz closes first, Canvas auto-submits it then, even with time left. That is from Instructure’s own guides. Silent Student, a desktop app not made by Instructure, works timed Classic and New Quizzes and submits them; it does not take proctored quizzes.
Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes timers, side by side
Canvas has two quiz engines. Instructure describes New Quizzes as “a quiz engine that integrates with Canvas and replaces the classic quizzes functionality” (What is New Quizzes?). If your quiz has a Begin button and a Question Navigator, it is probably New Quizzes; if it has a Take the Quiz button and a sidebar timer, it is Classic. Every row below is quoted or paraphrased from Instructure’s own guides.
| Situation | Classic Quizzes | New Quizzes |
|---|---|---|
| The timer | The sidebar timer “counts down until the time expires.” | A countdown appears on screen; you can click Hide to hide it. |
| Time warnings | If you start close to the autosubmit time, warnings 30 minutes, 5 minutes, 1 minute and 10 seconds before it. | A warning at two minutes left and another 30 seconds before the quiz ends. |
| Time runs out | A box says your time has expired, and the quiz “automatically submits after the ten-second countdown.” | The timed quiz ends and is submitted. Instructure: the quiz “will autosubmit when time runs out.” |
| You leave the quiz page | “The timer will keep running and the quiz will be automatically submitted when time runs out.” | Same: the timer keeps running while you are away. |
| The Until date arrives first | Canvas auto-submits at the Until date (or the course end), even with time left. | “Canvas will automatically submit the quiz on the last available date.” |
| Your internet drops | “Canvas extends the time for five minutes, saving the answer entered before the timer runs out.” | Not stated in the New Quizzes student guide. |
| Extra time | Your instructor adds minutes through the Moderate Quiz page. | Your instructor adds time or a time-limit multiplier as an accommodation. |
Does a Canvas quiz auto-submit when time runs out?
Yes. In Classic Quizzes, Instructure’s student guide says: “If you do not submit a timed quiz before the time runs out, Canvas displays a pop-up box telling you that your quiz time has expired. The quiz automatically submits after the ten-second countdown, or you can click the Ok, fine button, or Close icon to submit your quiz.”
In New Quizzes, the New Quizzes guide says a countdown appears on screen and that “a warning displays when there are only two minutes left, and another warning displays 30 seconds before the timed quiz ends.” Instructure’s resume guide covers both engines: “If you navigate away from an unfinished timed quiz, the timer will continue running and the quiz will autosubmit when time runs out.”
What gets submitted is what Canvas saved. The Classic guide says “Canvas will save your quiz as you go through it,” so the answers already saved when the clock hits zero are the ones that count.
Does the timer keep running if you leave the quiz?
Yes. Closing the tab or leaving the page does not pause a time limit. Instructure: “If you leave a timed quiz, the timer will keep running and the quiz will be automatically submitted when time runs out.” Its resume guide adds: “If you left a timed quiz and returned after the limit passed, the quiz was likely auto-submitted. Check your ‘Grades’ or ‘Submissions’ to see if a finished attempt exists.”
Instructors see one more detail. Instructure’s instructor guide says that when a student is viewing a timed Classic quiz and time expires, Canvas auto-submits it, but “if a student navigates away from the quiz page, the quiz submission remains outstanding” until the instructor submits outstanding attempts or an event such as the end of the availability dates triggers grading. So a quiz you walked away from can show as not yet graded for a while.
An untimed quiz is different: you can leave and come back, and “the quiz will resume where you left off,” as long as it is still available.
Which comes first: the Until date or the time limit?
Whichever is earlier. In Classic Quizzes, the due date in the sidebar “refers to the autosubmit date, which can be a specified Until date or the last day of the course.” Start a 60-minute quiz 20 minutes before it closes and you get 20 minutes.
Extra time does not get around it. Instructure’s guides for both engines say the same thing: “If the Until date passes when students are taking the quiz with extended time, the quiz auto-submits even if the student’s time extension has not expired” (Classic extra time), and in New Quizzes, “any in-progress quizzes auto-submit and the quiz closes, even if the student’s attempt has not expired” (New Quizzes accommodations).
A changed date does not help a quiz already in progress either: “If your instructor changes the due date of a quiz that you have already begun, the quiz will auto-submit based on the date and time of the original due date.”
What is the difference between a quiz’s due date and Until date?
The due date is when work becomes late; the Until date is when the quiz closes. Instructure’s New Quizzes guide gives an example: a quiz due 27 February at 10:59 pm with a last available date of 2 March at 10:59 pm. “If you were to miss the due date, you could still take the quiz until March 2 at 10:59 pm for late credit. If you do not submit the quiz by the last available date … Canvas will automatically submit the quiz on the last available date.”
Late penalties can reach earlier attempts. The Classic guide warns: “If a quiz allows multiple attempts and you make an attempt after the due date has passed, deductions are taken from all attempts, including attempts you may have made before the due date.” If you already have a score you are happy with, a late extra attempt can cost you.

How do you get extra time on a Canvas quiz?
Ask your instructor or your school’s disability services office; students cannot change a time limit themselves. In Classic Quizzes, the instructor uses the Moderate Quiz page to add “Extra Time on Every Attempt,” in full minutes (Instructure). In New Quizzes, accommodation settings “include adding or removing time for all quiz attempts and multiplying time limits by a set multiplier,” and a course accommodation applies to every quiz in that course (Instructure).
An instructor can also give an extra attempt; in Classic Quizzes, “when extra attempts are given via the Moderate Quiz option, Canvas keeps the highest quiz score” (Instructure). The Until date still applies to extra time and extra attempts alike.
What Silent Student does with timed Canvas quizzes, and where it stops
What it does
Silent Student is a desktop app for Mac and Windows, made by El Dorado Ignition LLC and not by Instructure. It signs in to your Canvas in its own browser and works quizzes, both Classic and New Quizzes, plus essays, discussion posts and file uploads, in due-date order.
Timed quizzes are never held for your review: it answers and submits them, because Canvas would submit them on its own when the timer ran out. Graded, single-attempt, untimed quizzes more than 20 minutes from their deadline are the ones it stops for you to check.
Its limits on quizzes
Calculated questions get only a generic text attempt, and in-quiz file-upload and hotspot questions are left unanswered. It refuses to submit a quiz with fewer than half the questions answered; on a timed quiz, Canvas’s own auto-submit then applies when time runs out. AI can be wrong, and a submitted attempt cannot be taken back.
Where it stops
- No proctored or LockDown Browser quizzes.
- It cannot add time, change an Until date or grant an attempt. Only your instructor can.
- Essays, discussions and uploads always wait for your approval.
- Instructure’s Acceptable Use Policy, effective 12 August 2025, says you may not “access, search, or create accounts for the Service by any means other than our publicly supported interfaces” or “share your API tokens, login, password, or other access credentials for the Service with any third party”, and points to rules set by whoever gave you access, “such as your school’s academic integrity policy”. In our reading, that reaches automated tools like Silent Student. We are not lawyers. Read the policy yourself before you decide.

Common questions
Yes. In Classic Quizzes, Canvas shows a time-expired box and submits after a ten-second countdown. Instructure’s guides say a timed quiz will autosubmit when time runs out in New Quizzes too.
No. Instructure says that if you leave a timed quiz, the timer keeps running and the quiz is submitted automatically when time runs out. Closing the tab does not pause it.
The Until date wins. Canvas auto-submits the quiz when it closes, even with time left on your timer, and even if your instructor gave you extra time.
Canvas saves Classic Quiz answers as you go, so the answers saved when time runs out are what get submitted. If your internet drops, Classic Quizzes add five minutes and keep the last answer entered.
Only your instructor can add it. In Classic Quizzes they add minutes on the Moderate Quiz page; in New Quizzes they set an accommodation that adds time or multiplies the time limit. The Until date still applies.
Classic shows the timer in a sidebar with warnings near the autosubmit time and a ten-second countdown at zero. New Quizzes shows a countdown you can hide, with warnings at two minutes and at 30 seconds.
It can. Instructure’s Classic guide warns that with a late policy, an attempt made after the due date means deductions are taken from all attempts, including ones made before the due date.
Yes. It works Classic and New Quizzes, including timed ones, and submits timed quizzes rather than holding them for review. It does not take proctored or LockDown Browser quizzes, and it cannot add time or change dates.
