Can Moodle see what you do during a quiz?

Pages, times, IP addresses and actions. Moodle’s documentation says a teacher can “see what pages the student accessed, the time and date they accessed it, the IP address they came from” and what they did, and can filter course logs by “group, student, date, activity, actions and level.” Silent Student signs in as you and does not hide or remove anything Moodle records. Your school’s academic-integrity policy applies.

What won’t it do in Moodle?

Moodle mode is honest about what it skips, and the run log names each one.

  • School single sign-on. Password sign-in only for now. A school that signs you in through a separate portal may not connect.
  • Locked quizzes. Safe Exam Browser, password and network-restricted quizzes are refused before an attempt starts.
  • Essay questions in quizzes. Skipped and named in the run log. A quiz made only of essays is not submitted.
  • Group assignments. Team submissions are not told apart from your own yet, so check group assignments yourself.

How much does Silent Student cost for Moodle?

Every plan includes Moodle mode, billed monthly: Base is $11.99, Plus $24.99 and Pro $49.99 a month. There is no free plan.

What it handles

What does Silent Student do on Moodle?

Quizzes, assignments and forums, worked through your own Moodle login and read back after every save.

Quizzes through Moodle’s own service

It reads each question, saves answers the way Moodle’s quiz form does, and submits the attempt once at the end.

Shuffled choices handled

Moodle can shuffle options on every attempt, so each choice is matched by its label, never by its position.

Assignments and file types

It writes online text or uploads a file, and it refuses a file type your teacher did not allow, even though Moodle’s server would accept it.

Every save read back

A submission counts only when Moodle reports it submitted and newer than before. A saved draft is never reported as handed in.

How it works

How does Silent Student work on Moodle, step by step?

  1. Choose Moodle mode

In Settings, pick Moodle and enter your school’s Moodle address.

  2. Add your Moodle login

Enter your Moodle username and password. The app signs in the same way the Moodle mobile app does.

  3. Queue the work

Your courses’ quizzes, assignments and forums appear in the app. Queue the ones you want done.

  4. Read the run log

It says what was answered, what was submitted and what was skipped, with the reason.

What do Moodle’s question behaviours change?

How and when you get feedback. Under deferred feedback, “Students must enter an answer to each question and then submit the entire quiz before anything is graded.” Interactive with multiple tries is “Used for allowing multiple attempts on the same question (perhaps with a grade penalty).” Silent Student saves answers and submits at the end, which suits deferred feedback; on an interactive quiz it uses one try per question.

What happens when a Moodle quiz’s time runs out?

By default it submits itself. Moodle’s quiz settings page says “When the timer has run out, the quiz is submitted automatically with whatever answers have been filled in so far.” A teacher can instead allow a grace period, or count an attempt only if it was submitted before time expired. A quiz has no time limit unless the teacher sets one.

What do Safe Exam Browser and browser security do?

They lock the quiz down. With the browser security option, “The quiz appears in a fullscreen popup window that covers all the other windows,” and students are kept “as far as is possible” from copy and paste. Safe Exam Browser is “a customised open-source web browser” made to work with Moodle quizzes. Silent Student refuses a Safe Exam Browser, password or network-restricted quiz before an attempt starts.

Does Moodle check for plagiarism or AI writing?

Not by itself. Moodle’s documentation says “Moodle doesn't come with any pre-installed plagiarism prevention methods - they need to be added by a site administrator.” Moodle 4.5 added an AI subsystem for features such as generating text and images and summarising course content; its documentation does not describe detecting AI-written work. What runs on your school’s Moodle depends on its plugins. Silent Student does not hide work from any checker.

Does it work if my school uses single sign-on for Moodle?

Not yet. Moodle mode signs in with a Moodle username and password. If your school sends you through a separate sign-in portal instead, this mode may not be able to connect.

Will it submit a quiz it could not finish?

Not an empty one. If it could not fill in any answer, it leaves the attempt in progress, where Moodle lets you resume it, and the run says so. A quiz it did answer is submitted, and it is reported as submitted only after the app reads the attempt’s state back from Moodle.

How does it handle Moodle forums?

It posts only when the target is clear. It replies to the one discussion in a single-discussion forum, starts your one discussion in a forum where each person posts one, and skips Announcements, separate-groups forums and forums with several discussions to choose from. It reads the post back before calling it done.

Questions

Moodle FAQ

Is Silent Student made by Moodle?

No. Silent Student is made by El Dorado Ignition LLC and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or certified by Moodle Pty Ltd.

Will it sign me out of the Moodle app on my phone?

No. It signs in the same way the Moodle mobile app does and leaves that sign-in in place when it finishes, so your phone stays signed in.

Does my school have to install a plugin?

No. It uses the web services the Moodle mobile app relies on, with your own login. If your school has turned off access for the Moodle app, this mode may not connect.
