How do you unenroll from a class on a computer?
From your Classes page. Google’s student steps:
- Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.
- Sign in with your Google Account, for example you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.com.
- On the class, click More, then Unenroll.
- Click Unenroll to confirm.
Use the account you joined with. Enrollment belongs to the account: Google’s join guide says “After you join a class on one device, you’re enrolled in that class for all devices.”
How do you leave a Google Classroom class on iPhone or Android?
In the Classroom app the steps are the same on Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad. Google lists two ways:
- From the Classes page. Open the Classroom app. On the class, tap More, then Unenroll, and tap Unenroll to confirm.
- From the class stream. Open the Classroom app and the class stream. Tap More, then Unenroll, and tap Unenroll to confirm.
Why can’t you unenroll from a Google Classroom class?
Google documents two reasons the option is missing or doesn’t work:
- Your school turned it off. Google’s admin guide says “By default, both students and teachers can unenroll a student from a class,” but admins can set “Who can unenroll students from classes?” to Only teachers. Admins can apply it to only part of their domain, so the rule can differ from one school to another.
- The class is archived. Teachers archive classes when they finish teaching them, and Google says “Students can’t unenroll from an archived class.” Ask your teacher to unarchive it first.
If you can’t leave on your own, ask your teacher to remove you. Google says “Primary teachers and co-teachers can remove a student or co-teacher from a class at any time.”
What happens when you leave a Google Classroom class?
Google’s student article lists two things. Its teacher article on removing a student covers the rest, and leaving yourself may not work the same way, so treat those rows as a guide.
| What | What Google says | Which article |
|---|---|---|
| The class | “The class is removed from Classroom.” | Unenroll from a class |
| Your files | “Your class files are stored in Google Drive.” | Unenroll from a class |
| Your grades | Removing a student “removes their grades from the gradebook.” | Remove a student (teacher) |
| Your posts and comments | A removed student’s posts, comments and answers “remain in the class stream and are visible to other class members.” | Remove a student (teacher) |
If you need a record of your grades or your teacher’s feedback, save it before you leave, and check for work still marked Missing (what Missing means in Google Classroom).
How do you get an old class off your Classes page?
Ask your teacher to archive it. Students can’t archive or delete a class, but Google says an archived class is “placed in a separate area to preserve the class materials, student work, and posts,” away from active classes on the Classes page. Archiving applies to everyone in the class, and Google notes that if a teacher doesn’t archive a class, “students and teachers in the class continue to find it on their Classes page.” Once it is archived you can no longer unenroll from it, which Google itself says “can limit how students can manage the classes they’re done taking.” Canvas keeps finished courses under Past Enrollments instead (how to see past courses on Canvas).
Can you rejoin a Google Classroom class after leaving?
Yes, the same way you joined. Google says “If you unenroll from a class and need to re-enroll, go to Join a class as a student.” You can join with a class link, a class code or an email invite from your teacher. With a code on a computer:
- Go to classroom.google.com and sign in with the correct account.
- At the top, click Join class. In the Android app it is at the bottom right.
- Enter the class code from your teacher.
- Click Join.
“Class codes are 6 to 8 characters long, and use letters and numbers.” If a code doesn’t work, Google says to check that you’re signed in with the correct account, then ask your teacher.

Questions people ask
How do I leave a Google Classroom class?
On the class card, click More, then Unenroll, and confirm. In the app, tap More on the class or in its stream, then Unenroll.
Why is there no Unenroll option in Google Classroom?
Your school admin may have set unenrollment to Only teachers, or the class is archived. Ask your teacher to remove you or to unarchive the class.
Do I lose my work if I leave a Google Classroom class?
Google says your class files are stored in Google Drive. The class itself is removed from your Classroom.
Will my teacher know if I unenroll from Google Classroom?
Google’s help pages don’t say whether teachers get a notice. Leaving takes you out of the class, so tell your teacher if the class still counts for you.
Can I rejoin a Google Classroom class after unenrolling?
Yes. Join again with the class code, class link or email invite from your teacher. Class codes are 6 to 8 characters of letters and numbers.
Can students archive or delete a Google Classroom class?
No. Google says teachers and co-teachers can archive a class, only the primary teacher can delete one, and students can’t archive or delete a class.
