What does Missing mean in Google Classroom?

Missing means the due date and time arrived before you turned the work in. Google says work is marked Missing or Done late “as soon as the due date or time arrives,” so work due at 9:00 AM has to be turned in by 8:59 AM. Your teacher can also mark work missing by hand, and you can list all of it under To-do, then Missing.

What do Assigned, Missing, Done late, Turned in, Returned and Graded mean?

These are the labels Google’s student and teacher guides use for a piece of work:

Google Classroom work statuses and what they mean
StatusWhat it meansGoogle guide
AssignedYour teacher posted the work and you haven’t turned it in. On the teacher’s side, Assigned also includes “missing or unsubmitted work.”Find your Classwork; Grade & return an assignment
MissingThe due date and time passed before you turned it in, or your teacher marked it missing.Find your Classwork; Grade & return an assignment
Done lateYou turned it in or marked it done after the due date. Google’s teacher guide calls this Turned in late.Find your Classwork; Create an assignment
Turned inYou clicked Turn in or Mark as done before the due time.Turn in an assignment
ReturnedYour teacher handed the work back without a grade.Grade & return an assignment
Graded (Returned with grade)Your teacher returned the work with a grade.Grade & return an assignment; Find your Classwork

A grade your teacher has typed but not returned is a draft, and you can’t see it yet. Google’s gradebook guide says “Grades you enter save as drafts until you click Return,” and “Students get their grades when you return their work.” Schoology splits the idea in two, with an automatic Overdue list and a Missing flag your teacher sets (missing assignments on Schoology).

How do you see missing work on Google Classroom?

Google’s Find your Classwork guide gives two routes.

For all your classes

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click To-do in the left menu, or View to-dos under Due soon on your homepage.
  3. Click Missing. Google: “To see work that you didn’t turn in, click Missing.”

For one class

  1. On the class card, click Your work. You can also open the class, click Classwork, then View your work.
  2. On the left, click Missing. The other filters are Assigned and Returned with grade.
  3. To see attachments and comments, click an item’s title, then View details.

In the Classroom app on Android or iPhone, tap View to-do list at the top and then Missing. For one class, tap the class, tap Classwork, tap Your work and filter by Missing. Google says leaving a class removes it from your Classroom, so check its work before you unenroll (how to leave a class on Google Classroom).

What does Done late mean in Google Classroom?

It means the work came in after the due time. Google’s turn-in guide says “Any assignment turned in or marked done after the due date is recorded as late.” Unsubmitting carries a trap: work turned in again after the due date “is marked late, even if you previously submitted the work before the due date.” If you unsubmit to fix something, resubmit before the deadline.

Your teacher may get an email about it. Classroom has a teacher notification called “Late submissions of student work” for when “a student submits work after the due date.”

Can you still turn in missing work?

In most classes, yes. Google’s student guide says “Your teacher sets the late-work policies for your class. However, Classroom doesn’t prevent you from turning in work after the due date.” Open the assignment, add your work and click Turn in or Mark as done (which button you get), and it will be recorded as late. Whether late work earns credit is up to your teacher, and a private comment on the assignment is the place to explain (who can see private comments?).

Google’s turn-in guide also says “You can only submit an assignment before the due date,” which doesn’t match the line above. If the button won’t work, the same guide says: “If you get an error message when you click Turn in, let your instructor know.”

Why is my work marked Missing when I turned it in?

These cases come straight from Google’s guides:

  • You turned it in at the due minute. “If you turn it in at 9:00 AM, it’s late.”
  • You unsubmitted it. After you unsubmit (how unsubmitting works), Google’s note reads “Turn it in again before the due date.”
  • The quiz was only part of the assignment. Submitting a Google Forms quiz turns in the assignment only “if the form is the only work for the assignment.” If there’s more, click Open assignment and finish it.
  • You worked in the doc and never clicked Turn in. For an assigned doc, the status changes after you click Turn in “on the document or in Classroom.”
  • Your teacher marked it. Teachers can mark work missing on the Grades page. If they return unfinished work without a grade, Google says the status shows “Assigned—or Missing if it’s late.”

If none of these fit, ask your teacher. A teacher can clear the label by hand: Mark as complete “removes the ‘Missing’ mark from an assignment and gives a blank score.”

Does Missing count as a zero?

Often, as a draft at first. Google’s teacher guide says “By default, assignments marked as ‘Missing’ or past due automatically get a draft score of zero,” and teachers can change that score or turn the feature off. Our Google Classroom grade calculator shows how a zero moves a total-points or weighted grade.

Can your parents see missing work in Google Classroom?

If a guardian gets Classroom email summaries, yes. Google says the summaries include “Missing work—Work that’s late at the time the email was sent,” along with upcoming work and recent class posts. They “do not include grades.” A teacher or school administrator sends the guardian invitation, and you get an email when a guardian is added.
