Where does Schoology show missing work?
In four places, all reached from the home page you see when you log in. PowerSchool’s home page and overdue guides describe each one.
| Where | What it shows | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Overdue (home page) | Materials not turned in on time, from most to least overdue | The quickest list of late work |
| Assignments (home page) | Upcoming, submitted and missing materials, with due date, teacher comments, exceptions, grade, course and category | Checking one course at a time with the course filter |
| To Do (home page) | Events, assignments, tests and quizzes, and discussions with a due date | What’s due next. With three or more overdue items, an option appears to see the rest |
| Grade Report (Grades) | Each graded item, your grade, the maximum points and teacher comments | Checking scores course by course |
The Overdue area is “displayed only when a student has at least one overdue item,” so if you don’t see it, Schoology has nothing it counts as overdue for you. It is home page only and “cannot be enabled at the course level.” Your school can also limit what you see: PowerSchool notes that “Grades and some of its contents may not be available to you” depending on school settings.
What is the difference between overdue and missing on Schoology?
Overdue is automatic, and Missing is a flag your teacher sets. Schoology adds an item to Overdue on its own when you haven’t turned it in on time. Missing is one of the exception codes a teacher can add to a gradebook cell, along with absent, collected, exempt, incomplete and late. Canvas and Google Classroom put their Missing labels on automatically once the due time passes (missing assignments on Canvas, Missing in Google Classroom).
| Code | PowerSchool’s description | Effect on your grade (persistence of flags off) |
|---|---|---|
| Missing | “The student did not submit the assignment” | “Treated as a zero” |
| Late | “The student submitted the assignment late” | No impact |
| Incomplete | “The student submitted incomplete work” | No impact |
| Exempt | “The student was excused from the assignment” | No impact |
| Absent | “The student was absent during the submission” | No impact |
| Collected | “Submitted but not yet graded” | “No score is recorded until graded” |
Those effects apply when the school has “persistence of flags” turned off. With it on, a score your teacher enters along with the flag counts toward your grade, except on Exempt items. A course admin can also stop Missing from counting as zero with the “Disable automatic scoring of missing exceptions as 0” setting.
Why isn’t a missing assignment showing in Overdue?
It doesn’t meet Schoology’s rules for Overdue. PowerSchool says an item only shows there when the teacher:
- is showing the material to students (hidden or unpublished materials are left out),
- has enabled submissions for the assignment,
- hasn’t locked submissions, and
- has assigned the material to a category.
Work in an LTI or external tool never shows as overdue, because “Schoology does not automatically detect submissions from external tools.” Check those tools directly.
An item also leaves Overdue when you submit, when your teacher enters a grade or adds an Excused exception, when the teacher turns off submissions for it, or when the course is archived. Resubmissions, later quiz attempts and follow-up discussion posts never appear there. An Incomplete mark does not take an item out. The reverse also happens: in year-long courses with semesters, overdue items from earlier periods “may continue to appear until the course is archived.”
How do you get alerts for missing assignments on Schoology?
Turn on Course Materials Overdue in your notification settings:
- Select your profile, then choose Settings.
- Click the Notifications tab.
- Find Course Materials Overdue and choose On for all courses, or Custom to pick courses.
- Click Save Changes.
You get one email or text per overdue item, however long it stays unsubmitted. For texts, add your number under Send Notifications to Your Phone via Text Message on the same tab. PowerSchool says text notifications aren’t supported outside the U.S. or Canada yet. The bell icon in the Schoology header is separate, and its notifications “are not customizable.”
Can you still turn in a missing assignment on Schoology?
Often, yes. PowerSchool’s gradebook guide says “Students can still make submissions to an item with an exception code entered.” The exception is a locked assignment, since teachers can “Lock an assignment to prevent students from making further submissions.” If the submit option is gone, ask your teacher. If you need to replace a file you already sent, see can you unsubmit on Schoology?
When you submit, the item drops out of your Overdue list. Your teacher still decides the score and whether the Missing flag comes off, so a submitted item can keep showing Missing until your teacher updates the gradebook.
Can parents see missing assignments on Schoology?
Yes. PowerSchool says guardians “can review their child’s work in the same Overdue area of the homepage.” Parents can also turn on Overdue Submissions Email for an email each time a due date is missed, and overdue items show in the Parent Email Digest if the system admin turned it on.
