Schoology grade calculator

Schoology works out each grading category by total points or by the average of its item percentages, then weights the categories with proportional weights. If a weighted category has no graded work yet, Schoology spreads its weight evenly across the other categories. Grading periods are then averaged into the overall course grade, with any midterm or final weighted in. Enter your grades below. The math runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How does Schoology calculate grades?

In two steps. First each grading category gets a percent, by one of two methods your teacher picks for that category:

Category methodHow Schoology calculates itExample
Total PointsTotal points earned divided by total points possible.12/13 and 11/13 make 23/26 = 88.46%.
PercentageBased on the percentage scores of the individual items.80% and 95% average to 87.5%.

Then the categories are weighted. Weights are proportional values, so weights of 2 and 1 count the same as 66.67% and 33.33%. Schoology works with unrounded values all the way through. Its own example: homework at 88.46153846% and quizzes at 88.23529412%, weighted 50 and 50, give (50 × 88.46153846 + 50 × 88.23529412) ÷ 100 = 88.35%.

A category can also drop its lowest grades: “Use Drop lowest to automatically drop the lowest n grades within that category from each student’s overall score.” Changing category weights affects every grading period in the course.

What happens to a Schoology category with no grades?

Schoology’s rule is specific: “If one weighted category has no associated graded materials, then the category’s weight is evenly distributed across the other categories.” Evenly means each remaining category gets the same share, whatever its own weight.

Take weights of 50, 30 and 20 with nothing graded yet in the 20 category. Split evenly, the other two become 60 and 40. Split in proportion, the way many gradebooks do it, they would be 62.5 and 37.5. With 80% in the first category and 90% in the second, the even split gives 84% and the proportional split gives 83.75%. The calculator uses the even split and shows the proportional figure next to it, so you can see how much the rule matters for your numbers.

How does Schoology combine grading periods and finals?

“The Gradebook automatically calculates an overall score combining all materials and all grading periods.” How the periods combine depends on how your school set them up:

  • Semesters. For a year-long course on a semester system, “grades for each semester are averaged to calculate the Overall course grade.”
  • Quarters inside semesters. Quarters are sub-periods. “The sub-periods are averaged to calculate the semester grades. The semester grades are averaged to calculate the Overall course grade.”
  • Midterms and finals. An item set as a midterm or final gets its own weight in Grading Periods & Final Weights. Aligned with the sub-periods of a period, it counts in that period’s grade. Aligned with no grading period, it counts against the periods in the overall grade.

Use the second calculator with your periods and any final. Leave the final blank, pick it in “Work out what I need on,” and enter the overall grade you want.

Does Schoology round grades?

Item grades are shown rounded to the hundredth, but period and overall grades are calculated from unrounded values. A teacher can tick Round Period/Final Grades in Final Grade Settings to round grading period and overall percents to whole numbers. Then “grades are rounded at the lowest applicable level, combined, and then rounded again.”

Rounding can change what you need. Say semester 1 is 88.88% and semester 2 is 91.2%, each weighted 40, with a final weighted 20. Unrounded, a 90% overall needs 89.84% on the final. With rounding on, the semesters count as 89 and 91, and an overall of 89.5 rounds up to 90, so 87.5% on the final is enough. Tick the rounding box in the first calculator and both calculators round this way.

A worked example

Weighted categories, one calculated by percentage, one with nothing graded yet. The Load the example buttons put these numbers into both calculators.

Category (weight, method)GradesCategory percentCounts as
Classwork (40, total points)18/20, 9/1027/30 = 90%55
Quizzes (30, percentage)80%, 95%87.5%45
Tests (30, total points)none yetno grades0, split 15 and 15

Grading period grade: (55 × 90 + 45 × 87.5) ÷ 100 = 88.875%, shown as 88.88%. A proportional split would give 88.93%.

Why your Schoology grade might not match

  • Missing work counts as zero. A Missing exception scores 0 unless your school turned on “Disable automatic scoring of missing exceptions as 0.” Enter it as 0 points if it shows as a zero.
  • An override. Teachers can add a course or grading period override column. You then see the grade they entered, not the calculated one.
  • Hidden grades. A course can hide overall or grading period grades from the student report. Hiding period grades also hides category grades.
  • Your school’s official grade lives elsewhere. Schools can sync Schoology grades back to a student information system. Items set as a midterm or final do not sync back, so the report card grade can differ.
  • The course is not weighted. Schoology’s documentation covers weighted categories. For an unweighted course this calculator adds up points across every category.

If your school’s report card comes from PowerSchool, Infinite Campus or Skyward, those calculators follow each system’s own rules. If your school uses PowerSchool, the PowerSchool GPA calculator turns report card grades into a GPA with PowerSchool’s standard weighted and simple formulas.

Each school gradebook does the math its own way. There are calculators for PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Skyward and Google Classroom too.

Schoology grade calculator FAQ

How does Schoology calculate grades?

Each category is calculated by total points or by the average of its item percentages. The categories are then weighted with proportional weights and averaged, using unrounded values. Grading periods are averaged into the overall course grade.

What happens if a Schoology category has no grades?

If a weighted category has no graded materials, Schoology spreads its weight evenly across the other categories. With weights 50, 30 and 20 and nothing graded in the 20 category, the other two count as 60 and 40.

Does Schoology round grades?

Not by default. Item grades display to the hundredth and period and overall grades use unrounded values. If your teacher turns on Round Period/Final Grades, period and overall grades round to whole numbers, rounded first at the lowest level and again after combining.

How do grading periods affect my overall grade in Schoology?

Schoology averages the grading periods into the overall course grade: quarters into semesters and semesters into the year. A midterm or final can be given its own weight. Enter your period grades in the second calculator to see the overall grade and what you need on the final.

Why can’t I see my overall grade in Schoology?

Your teacher or school may hide it. Final Grade Settings can hide overall grades or grading period grades from the student report. You can still work it out here from your item grades and the category weights.

Does this calculator send or save my grades?

No. The math runs in your browser, and the numbers and names you type are not sent to any server or stored on your device. Close the tab and they are gone. The page itself is counted in our visit statistics, which never include what you type.
