Infinite Campus grade calculator

Infinite Campus calculates your In Progress grade from your teacher’s Grade Calc Options. With Weight Categories ticked, each category percent counts by its weight, and weights work as ratios, so 2, 1 and 1 count the same as 50%, 25% and 25%. Unticked, every point counts the same. A semester grade can then be a composite of quarter grades and an exam. Enter your scores and weights below. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

How does Infinite Campus calculate grades?

Each grading task in a section, such as a quarter grade, has its own calculation options. Your teacher sets them under Grade Calc Options, or the district sets them at the course level and locks them. For a traditional grade the settings that change the math are these:

SettingWhat Infinite Campus doesIn this calculator
Weight CategoriesCategory weights count in the In Progress grade. Without it, weights are ignored. The Weight Categories box.
Category weightA percent, or a ratio of the other weights. Tests 2, Homework 1, Quizzes 1 makes tests half the grade. The Weight field. Any numbers work.
Use score’s % valueEach assignment counts as its percent instead of its raw points. The Use score’s % value box.
MultiplierA 50 point assignment with a multiplier of 2 counts as a 100 point assignment.Type x2 after the score: 45/50x2.
Drop Lowest ScoreRemoves the lowest score in a category, by percent. The Drop lowest box on each category.
Exclude from CalculationThe category does not count in the grade.Leave that category out.

What does “Use score’s % value” change?

It decides whether big assignments outweigh small ones inside a category. Infinite Campus’s example uses two scores, 8/10 and 100/100. Added as points they make 108/110, about 98%. Taken as percents they are 80% and 100%, which average to 90% for the category.

So with the box unticked, a 100 point test moves the category ten times as much as a 10 point quiz. With it ticked, every assignment counts the same. Your teacher picks one, so if your portal’s category percent does not match what you expect, try the calculator both ways.

How does drop lowest work in Infinite Campus?

When Drop Lowest Score is ticked on a category, Infinite Campus marks one score in that category as dropped for each student, and recalculates every time a score changes. Its rules:

  • Only active assignments with a score entered can be dropped. Exempt scores are not candidates.
  • Scores are compared by percent of points possible, so 5/10 is lower than 60/100.
  • An M (missing) or Ch (cheated) score typed as a shortcut counts as 0%, so it can be the one dropped. A score flagged missing from the menu is left blank and is not considered.
  • On a tie, the score with the highest points possible is dropped.

The calculator follows the same rules. It keeps a category’s only score, which the guide does not cover.

How is a semester grade calculated in Infinite Campus?

With composite grading. A parent task, such as the semester, is calculated from child tasks, such as two quarters and an exam. Each child gets a weight, and the weights “calculate relative to each other, rather than as percentages of 100.” Infinite Campus’s example: weights of 1 and 2 make the tasks count 33.33% and 66.667%. Another of its examples has two semesters of equal weight and a final exam worth 10%.

The parent’s In Progress percent is the weighted average of the children’s percents. A child that has a posted grade counts its posted percent, and one that does not counts its In Progress percent. A child with neither does not count at all. The same rule covers students who join late: in Infinite Campus’s example, four quarters and a final exam are worth 20% each, and a student who joins in Q2 has Q2, Q3, Q4 and the exam counted at 25% each.

The second calculator works the same way. Leave a child task blank and it is left out, with the other weights filling its share. To see what you need on the exam, leave it blank, pick it in “Work out what I need on” and enter a target.

A worked example

Weight Categories is on and “Use score’s % value” is off. The Load the example buttons put these numbers into both calculators.

Category (weight)ScoresCategory percent
Homework (1), drop lowest9/10, 8/10, 10/10, 5/105/10 dropped, 27/30 = 90%
Quizzes (1)40/50, 45/50 with multiplier 2(40 + 90) ÷ (50 + 100) = 86.67%
Tests (2)82/10082%

In Progress grade: (1 × 90 + 1 × 86.67 + 2 × 82) ÷ 4 = 85.17%. With Weight Categories off, the same scores add to 85.36% by points.

For the semester composite, say Q1 is 85.17% and Q2 is 88%, weighted 40 and 40, with the semester exam at 20. So far the composite is 86.59%. To finish at 85% you need at least 78.66% on the exam.

Why your Infinite Campus grade might not match

  • The settings are different. Weight Categories and score % value change the result a lot. Your district may set them at the course level.
  • A grade is posted. Once your teacher posts a quarter grade, the composite uses the posted percent, which can differ from the In Progress percent.
  • Cumulative grading. If your teacher set Cumulative Grading Starting in an earlier term, assignments from that term count now. Infinite Campus notes that the portal then shows your current In Progress grade for future terms too.
  • Standards or rubrics. Standards scored with rubrics use proficiency estimates such as Power Law or Decaying Average, which this calculator does not model.
  • Multipliers with score % value. The guide does not say how a multiplier counts when % value is on. This calculator counts it as that percent repeated.
  • The grading scale. Letters come from your teacher’s grading scale. Pick the closest scale or read the percent.

The weighted grade calculator handles any category-weighted class, and the final grade calculator works backward from one current grade to a final exam score.

Each school gradebook does the math its own way. There are calculators for PowerSchool, Skyward, Schoology and Google Classroom too.

Infinite Campus grade calculator FAQ

How does Infinite Campus calculate grades?

From your teacher’s Grade Calc Options. With Weight Categories on, each category percent counts by its weight, and weights are ratios of each other. With it off, every point counts the same. The Use score’s % value option makes each assignment count as its percent instead of its points.

What is the In Progress grade in Infinite Campus?

It is the grade calculated from the scores entered so far in a grading task, such as a quarter. It changes as new scores come in. A posted grade is the one your teacher records for the term, and it can differ from the In Progress grade.

Do category weights have to add up to 100 in Infinite Campus?

No. Infinite Campus treats weights as ratios of each other. Tests 2, Homework 1 and Quizzes 1 work the same as 50%, 25% and 25%.

Does a missing assignment count as zero in Infinite Campus?

A score entered as M (missing) counts as 0%. A score flagged missing from the menu stays blank, so it does not count in the grade until a score is entered. Ask your teacher which one your class uses.

How is a semester grade calculated in Infinite Campus?

With composite grading: the semester task is a weighted average of child tasks such as two quarters and an exam. Weights are relative, and a child task with no percent does not count. Enter your quarter percents and weights in the second calculator to see the semester grade and what you need on the exam.

Does this calculator send or save my grades?

No. The math runs in your browser, and the numbers and names you type are not sent to any server or stored on your device. Close the tab and they are gone. The page itself is counted in our visit statistics, which never include what you type.
