What each Infinite Campus flag does
Teachers add flags to a score from the expanded assignment view in the Grade Book. Infinite Campus’s scoring guide gives each one an abbreviation and a rule:
| Flag | Letters | Effect on the grade |
|---|---|---|
| Turned In | T | None. Set automatically when you submit through Campus Student, and it closes that assignment for submission |
| Missing | M | Either none (an indicator) or a set percentage of the points, depending on the district |
| Late | L | “This flag has no effect on student score” |
| Incomplete | I | None on the grade (it can stop some standards estimates from calculating) |
| Cheated | Ch | “Scores with the cheated flag automatically calculate as zero” |
| Exempt | X | “Exempt scores are not included in In Progress grade calculations” |
| Dropped | Dr | “Dropped scores are not included in In Progress grade calculations” |
In Progress grades are the grades the Grade Book calculates as scores come in, so an Exempt or Dropped assignment is left out as if it had never been assigned. Cheated is the only flag that always lowers the grade, because it replaces the score with a zero.
Does a missing assignment count as a zero in Infinite Campus?
Only if your district turned on Auto-Calculate, and then it counts as zero unless the district entered a different percentage. Infinite Campus describes the two settings in its Missing Assignment Setup tool:
- Auto-Calculate off. “The Missing flag in the Grade Book becomes an indicator only. In this instance, teachers CAN score assignments flagged as Missing.” The flag is just a label, and the grade uses whatever score the teacher types in.
- Auto-Calculate on. Missing assignments “calculate as the entered percentage of Total Points,” and the teacher can’t type a score while the flag is on. The guide adds: “By default, Missing assignments calculate as 0 points.”
The guide’s own example uses 25%: a 20-point assignment flagged Missing “calculates as 5 points.” This only applies to assignments scored with points or marks, not rubrics.
Infinite Campus’s scoring guide gives teachers a quick test: “Can you enter a score for a missing assignment? If so, no calculation has been set.” If it calculates automatically, the teacher can hover over the score cell to see the calculated score. Your teacher can tell you which setting your school uses.
What is the difference between Exempt and Dropped?
Neither one counts. The difference is who sets it. A teacher marks a score Exempt when you don’t have to do the work. Dropped can come from the category’s Drop Lowest Score setting, which “automatically removes the lowest score in the category (by percentage) from calculating into the student’s grade.” Teachers can also mark a score Dropped by hand.
Exempt assignments are also hidden from you. The scoring guide says “exempted assignments do not display in student and parent views,” so an assignment that disappears from Campus Student may have been exempted rather than deleted.
What does a multiplier mean in Infinite Campus?
It makes an assignment count more than its points. Infinite Campus’s categories guide: “a 50 point assignment with a Multiplier of 2 counts as a 100 point assignment.” A category can carry a default multiplier for its assignments, and it applies to assignments scored with points or marks.
A multiplier changes the assignment’s weight inside its category, not your percentage on it. A 45 out of 50 is 90% with or without a multiplier of 2. It just counts like a 90 out of 100 next to the other assignments in that category. To try a multiplier on your own scores, the Infinite Campus grade calculator accepts it as “45/50x2”.
A worked example: one assignment, six outcomes
Say a Homework category has four 10-point assignments. You scored 9, 8 and 10 on the first three. Here is the category percentage under each thing that can happen to the fourth, using the rules above with grades calculated by points within the category.
| What happens to assignment 4 | Points counted | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Scored 7, Late | 34 / 40 | 85.0% |
| Missing, default 0% | 27 / 40 | 67.5% |
| Missing, set to 50% | 32 / 40 | 80.0% |
| Cheated | 27 / 40 | 67.5% |
| Exempt | 27 / 30 | 90.0% |
| Dropped | 27 / 30 | 90.0% |
The gap between the top and bottom rows is 22.5 points of one category from a single assignment. Exempt (or Dropped) is the best outcome you can get on work you didn’t do, because the assignment stops counting at all. With category weighting on, that category’s percentage is then multiplied by its weight, so the effect on the overall grade depends on how much Homework is worth.
What to do about a flag you think is wrong
- If you turned the work in, check for the Turned In flag. Infinite Campus removes Missing when a teacher marks an assignment Turned In, and the reverse.
- Ask your teacher. Only the teacher (or the district, for the Missing percentage) can change a flag or its effect.

We make Silent Student, a paid desktop study app for students 13 and up. Our free Infinite Campus grade calculator needs no account: enter a Missing assignment as 0, or leave an Exempt one out, to see what it does to your grade.
Questions people ask
Does a missing assignment count as a zero in Infinite Campus?
Only if your district turned on Auto-Calculate for Missing. Then a Missing assignment counts as the percentage the district entered, and by default that is 0 points. With Auto-Calculate off, Missing is only a label and the grade uses whatever score the teacher enters.
What does X mean in Infinite Campus?
X is the Exempt flag. Infinite Campus says exempt scores are not included in In Progress grade calculations, and exempted assignments do not display in student and parent views.
What does a multiplier of 2 mean in Infinite Campus?
The assignment counts double. Infinite Campus’s example: a 50 point assignment with a multiplier of 2 counts as a 100 point assignment.
Does a Late flag lower my grade in Infinite Campus?
Not by itself. Infinite Campus says the Late flag has no effect on student score. A teacher can still enter a lower score for late work.
What does Dr mean on Infinite Campus?
Dr is the Dropped flag. Dropped scores are not included in In Progress grade calculations. The category’s Drop Lowest Score setting marks the lowest score by percentage as dropped automatically.
Why did an assignment disappear from Infinite Campus?
One possible reason is that it was marked Exempt: Infinite Campus says exempted assignments do not display in student and parent views. Ask your teacher if you’re not sure.
