What can a Google Classroom teacher see?
We sorted everything Google’s Classroom and Docs help pages say a teacher can see into one table, with a column for which features need a paid Workspace edition.
| Record | What the teacher sees | Where | Paid edition? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Status | Assigned, Turned in, Graded or Returned, per assignment | Student work page | No |
| See history | How many times you submitted, and how your grade changed | Grading tool | No |
| Your copy | A Doc, Sheet or Slides file the teacher made for you, as you work | The file | No |
| Version history | Earlier versions of a file and who edited it | Docs, Sheets, Slides | No, but needs edit access |
| Private comments | Every private comment, deleted ones included | Assignment, grading tool, email | No |
| Class comments | Deleted posts and comments | Class stream | No |
| Emails | Late work and resubmissions | Notifications the teacher turns on | No |
| Originality | A report on your turned-in Docs or Slides | Grading tool | Free for 5 assignments per class; unlimited on Teaching and Learning or Education Plus |
| File opens | Who has and hasn’t opened a Drive attachment | Assignment card | Yes, Education Plus |
| Last edit | When you last edited a submitted Docs, Sheets, Slides or Drawings file | Student work page | Yes, Education Plus |
| Analytics | Share of students active in the class (page views, submissions, comments, posts) | Class analytics | Yes, Education Plus or Teaching and Learning Upgrade |
Your school, not your teacher, decides which Workspace edition it has, so the paid rows apply to some classes and not others. If you’re not sure, ask your teacher or school.
Can teachers see your work before you turn it in?
For a file your teacher handed out, yes. When a teacher picks Make a copy for each student, Google’s teacher guide says “You and the student can edit the document,” and the student guide says that for a document with your name in the title, “As you work, your teacher can review your progress before you click Turn in.” After you turn it in, the edit rights flip: “they can’t edit the document until you return it to them.”
Two other file settings work differently. With Students can view file, all students can read the file but not edit it; with Students can edit file, “All students share the same file and can make changes to it.” Work you haven’t turned in shows on the Student work page under Assigned, which Google defines as “Work that students have to turn in, including missing or unsubmitted work.” What happens when you unsubmit is covered in our unsubmit guide.
Can teachers see previous submissions and edit history?
Two different histories exist, and they live in different places.
- Submission history in Classroom. Google’s feedback guide says a teacher “can see how the grade for an assignment has changed and how many times a student has submitted work for an assignment” by clicking See history. It adds: “This feature is only available on turned-in and graded assignments.”
- Version history in the file. In Docs, Sheets and Slides, hovering over Last edit shows “who was the last person to update the file and when,” and the version history panel shows earlier versions and who made the changes. The limit is access: “To browse earlier versions of a file, you need permission to edit that file.”
Putting those together (our reading, not a line from Google): on a copy the teacher made for you, the teacher has edit access, so they meet the requirement to open its version history. For a file you made yourself and attached, it depends on how the file is shared, which Google’s Classroom pages don’t spell out.
Can teachers see if you opened an assignment or a file?
Only on paid editions, and only for certain things. With Google Workspace for Education Plus, Google’s grading guide says a teacher can click Number of students haven’t opened under a Drive attachment and get “A dialog lists the students who have and haven’t opened the attachment.” On the same plan, “On the Student work page, you can check when each student last edited their submission,” for Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drawings.
Class analytics, on Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, has an “Active students %” figure: “the percentage of all students in the class who interacted with this class during the selected time period. Some examples of interactions include page views, assignment submissions, comments, and posts.” Google says analytics “are updated daily and it may take up to 24 hours” to reflect a change, and the page also shows assignment completion and average grade. The Classroom help pages we read don’t describe a timeline of when each student opened Classroom.
Can teachers see deleted comments?
Yes, both kinds. For the class stream, Google tells students: “You can only delete your own comments. Teachers can see deleted comments.” Teachers can also switch on Show deleted items in class settings, and Google says students “can’t edit their posts or comments, but they can delete them.” For private comments on an assignment, the same student guide says “All teachers in the course can view and reply to private comments” and “All teachers can view private comments even after they have been deleted.” More on those in our private comments guide.
What does Google Classroom email teachers about?
Among the email notifications Google lists for teachers, three are about what a student does:
- “Private comments on work”: “A student sends you a private comment.”
- “Late submissions of student work”: “A student submits work after the due date.”
- “Resubmissions of student work”: “A student resubmits work.”
Teachers choose which notifications they get, and Google says “Students and teachers can change their notification settings at any time,” so a given teacher may get none of them.
What do originality reports show your teacher?
If your teacher turns them on, the reports “compare your Google Docs, Google Slides, and Microsoft Word files against webpages and books on the internet,” link to sources and flag uncited text. There are two kinds, and they go to different people:
| Report | When it runs | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|
| Your own check | When you click Run, up to 3 times, before turning in | You. “Your teacher can’t find the reports that you run.” |
| The turn-in report | Automatically when you turn in, and again if you unsubmit and resubmit | Your teacher: “a report that only your teacher can find.” |
If your school’s administrator has enabled school matches, your teacher’s report also checks “against previous student submissions from your school or district,” and, when the conditions Google lists are all met, your work is copied into that comparison set. Google notes a 2 MB file limit for reports.
What can parents see?
Guardians a teacher or admin invites can get email summaries with “Missing work,” “Upcoming work” and “Class activities.” Google says the summaries “do not include grades.” Our missing work guide covers what makes an assignment show as Missing.
Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a paid desktop app from El Dorado Ignition LLC that signs in to your course platforms as you and works assignments in its own browser (passes start at $4.99 for a week). It doesn’t hide, clear or change any of the records on this page; anything done in your account shows up in them the same way. Your school’s academic-integrity policy still applies. The free Google Classroom grade calculator below doesn’t need an account.

How this guide was made. We read each Google page listed above on November 2, 2026 and quote them directly. The summary table and its paid-edition column sort what those pages say; the point about version history on teacher-made copies is our reading of two separate Google pages. We wrote the guide with AI assistance and checked each quote against its source.
