What is Mastery Training in MindTap?
Mastery Training is one of MindTap’s activity types. Cengage’s student help lists it under Complete Activities, next to readings, labs and Write Experience, and describes it in one paragraph:
“Powered by Cerego, Mastery Training activities adapt to each student’s performance to help them learn and apply concepts efficiently and effectively. Relying on the principle of distributed practice, these assignments require each student to follow a schedule and review core concepts in small chunks over time. Mastery Training refreshes your memory for each item just as it’s about to fade by tracking your performance, measuring pace, response time, and accuracy to predict the best time to review.”
The same paragraph appears in Cengage’s instructor help. Cerego is the company whose learning engine runs the activity. MindTap Mastery Training and Cengage Mastery Training are two names for the same activity. Cengage’s SAM trainings are a different product, for Microsoft Office skills (what is Cengage SAM?).
What does Cengage document about Mastery Training?
One paragraph and three instructor videos. This table sets out what the official help covers, and where it stops.
| Question | What the official help says | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| What powers it? | “Powered by Cerego.” | Cengage student and instructor help |
| How does it pick what you see? | It tracks “pace, response time, and accuracy to predict the best time to review.” | Cengage student help |
| Why do items come back? | Reviews are timed for just before you forget, and a missed quiz question repeats until you answer it correctly. | Cengage help; Cerego support, written for Cerego’s own app |
| Who sets the goal? | Instructors. Cengage has an instructor video on “Adjusting assignment goals.” | Cengage instructor help; Cerego support |
| What does a break or pause message mean? | Not documented. | Ask your instructor |
| What happens at the due date? | Not documented for Mastery Training itself. | Cengage Automatic Submission page; ask your instructor |
Why does Mastery Training keep showing the same items?
Because review is the method. Cengage says Mastery Training “refreshes your memory for each item just as it’s about to fade.” An item you answered correctly earlier comes back when the system predicts you are about to forget it.
Cerego’s support center, written for Cerego’s own app, explains the repeats in plain terms:
- Each session mixes material. “Sometimes these are new concepts, other times these are established memories you’ve seen before that we predict you need to review.”
- A miss repeats in the same session. “If you are in a session and get a quiz question incorrect, we’ll show you that same quiz again until you provide the correct answer.”
- Repeats thin out. “Over time, you’ll review the same concepts less and less often.”
Cengage doesn’t say whether MindTap’s version behaves exactly like Cerego’s app, so read these as how the engine is meant to work.
Can you finish Mastery Training in one sitting?
Cengage’s description points the other way. It says these assignments “require each student to follow a schedule and review core concepts in small chunks over time.” Cerego’s page on the science behind its engine gives the reason: “the best time to review what you’ve learned is right before you are likely to forget it.”
In practice that means starting early. A short session on several days gives the schedule room to bring items back before the due date. Cengage doesn’t publish how many sessions an assignment needs or how long each should take. It does list pace and response time next to accuracy, so how quickly you answer is part of what it tracks.
What can your instructor set in Mastery Training?
The assignment goal, at least. Cengage’s instructor help page for Mastery Training has three videos: “Mastery Training: Overview,” “Mastery Training: Adjusting assignment goals” and “Mastery Training: Running reports.” The page doesn’t give a written version of them.
Cerego’s support center describes goals from the teacher’s side: “Teachers or instructors define the Retention Goals for a course or an assignment.” Progress toward that goal is an average. Cerego says it “takes the memory retention values of all items being studied and calculates their average,” and gives an example of three items at 80%, 100% and 120%, which average 100%, “which means the learner has made 100% progress towards the retention goal, even though not all items individually reached the goal.”
In Cerego’s model, then, progress can read 100% while a few items are still weak. Cengage’s help doesn’t say whether MindTap shows goals the same way. Your instructor can tell you which goal they set and how it counts in your grade.
What about the break screen and the due date?
We found no Cengage page that explains a break or pause message in Mastery Training, or how a partly finished review schedule is scored at the due date, so we don’t describe either here. Even Cerego’s own help sends grading questions back to the class: “If you want to know how your instructor assesses your work on Cerego, please refer to the syllabus or to him or her directly.”
What Cengage does publish is MindTap’s general due-date rule. Its Automatic Submission page says “most activities are automatically submitted if they are in progress when the due date passes, but some are not,” and lists the types that are not, including InQuizitive, Learning Labs and Coding Labs. Mastery Training is not on that list, and the page says nothing else about it. For late periods and penalties, see what happens when a MindTap assignment is late.
Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a desktop app for Mac and Windows from El Dorado Ignition LLC. It works MindTap activities opened from Canvas, and we have published no Mastery Training run, so this guide makes no claim about it. Cengage’s Terms of Service bar access through automated means, which in our reading reaches Silent Student; our MindTap guide quotes them, and Silent Student on Cengage MindTap has the details.
Questions people ask
How does Cengage Mastery Training work?
It is a MindTap activity, powered by Cerego, that schedules short reviews of core concepts over time. Cengage says it tracks pace, response time and accuracy to predict the best time to review each item.
Why does Mastery Training keep repeating questions?
Repeats are the method. Cengage says it refreshes each item just as it is about to fade, and Cerego’s help says a missed quiz question comes back in the same session until you answer it correctly.
Can I do all of Mastery Training in one night?
Cengage says the assignments require you to follow a schedule and review in small chunks over time, so start early. It doesn’t publish how many sessions an assignment needs.
Is Mastery Training the same as Cerego?
Cengage says Mastery Training is “Powered by Cerego.” Cerego also runs its own app, and Cengage doesn’t say whether every screen matches it.
What does the Mastery Training break screen mean?
Cengage’s help doesn’t describe one. If a message tells you to stop or come back later, ask your instructor how it affects the assignment.
Does Mastery Training auto-submit at the due date?
Cengage doesn’t say for Mastery Training. Its general rule is that most in-progress MindTap activities are submitted automatically at the due date but some are not, so check with your instructor.
