Where do you find a Cengage course key or WebAssign class key?

From your instructor. Cengage says course keys “are provided by your instructor,” so check the syllabus, the course site or your instructor’s email, and ask if it isn’t there. WebAssign calls the same code a class key, and you enter either one on your Cengage dashboard or at getenrolled.com.

Every quote below comes from Cengage’s student help for Cengage, MindTap and WebAssign, checked October 20, 2026. This guide is not affiliated with Cengage.

Where do you get a Cengage course key?

Only from your instructor. Cengage’s help says “Course keys are provided by your instructor. They are strings of numbers and letters that identify a specific course.” Because a key points to one specific course, the wrong key puts you in the wrong class. Cengage’s WebAssign help has a page for exactly that problem.

Not every class uses a key. Cengage describes three ways into a course: a course key, a course link, and your school’s learning management system (LMS). Its course-link page says “If you do not have a course link, you might need to access your course through your LMS or with a course key.” Check which one your instructor gave you before you start.

How do you enter a course key on the Cengage dashboard?

  1. Sign in at login.cengage.com, or click Create Account. Cengage asks whether you are a student, then for your institutional email address.
  2. If you made a new account, open the activation email, click Activate Cengage Account and set your password.
  3. On your dashboard, click Enter Access Code or Course Key.
  4. Enter the key exactly as your instructor gave it.

Once you are enrolled, you open the course from its tile. Cengage’s help says to “Find the tile for your Cengage course” on the dashboard and click Open Cengage.

How do you enroll at getenrolled.com?

  1. Go to getenrolled.com.
  2. Enter your course key (WebAssign: class key), click Access Course, then click Continue.
  3. Sign in to your Cengage account, or create one.
  4. Enter an access code, buy your course materials, or continue with temporary access.

When you finish, Cengage says, “Your Cengage course is added to your student dashboard.”

Do you have to pay as soon as you enter the key?

Not always. Cengage’s enrollment steps offer temporary access: “You can access your Cengage course without payment during its grace period. The grace period starts when the course is first available and lasts up to 14 days, depending on the course length.” During the grace period you can complete your coursework, you are reminded to buy access each time you open the class, and “No payment method is required.” After it ends, “all of your work is still available to your instructor,” but you have to buy access or enter a valid access code to keep using Cengage.

An access code is a different thing from a course key. Cengage says “You have an access code if you purchased from your school bookstore or an online retailer.” The course key tells Cengage which class you belong to, and the access code is what you paid for.

How do you enroll in WebAssign with a class key?

The same way, since a WebAssign class key is the Cengage course key under another name. Cengage’s WebAssign help says “To complete assignments in WebAssign, you must be enrolled in a class created by your teacher,” and lists three ways that happens:

  • Self-enrollment. “Your instructor gives you a link or class key to enroll yourself in the class.” Use your existing WebAssign account if you have one. If not, you can create one as you enroll.
  • Instructor enrollment. Your instructor enrolls you “and gives you a new WebAssign username, institution code, and password.” No key is needed. If you already have a different WebAssign account, link the two accounts to see your class.
  • Automatic enrollment. “Your school automatically enrolls you in the class after you use the school’s enrollment system.” Ask your instructor how to sign in.

One more rule from that page: “Your WebAssign and Cengage accounts must be linked before you can purchase access.”

Do you need a course key if your class uses Canvas or Blackboard?

Usually not. Cengage says that if your course uses an LMS “like Canvas, Blackboard, or a school-specific platform, enroll in your Cengage section by clicking an assignment link in your LMS.” Sign in to the LMS, open your course, and click one of the Cengage links your instructor added. Cengage notes that you “might have to ask your instructor which link to click, or try clicking a few links to find the right one.”

On a shared computer, clear the cache and cookies first. Cengage warns: “If another user is signed in to their Cengage account in the same browser, your LMS account might get linked to the wrong Cengage account when you enroll.” For MindTap in particular, see how to log in to MindTap and find your work.

Why is my Cengage course key not working?

Work through these in order. Each one comes from a rule in Cengage’s own help.

  1. Is it really a course key? A code from the bookstore or an online retailer is an access code. Cengage’s course key examples look like MTP1X111X1X1, E-Y11XX11XX1X1X or MYSCHOOL 1234 5678.
  2. Is it typed exactly? Two of Cengage’s examples include a hyphen or spaces. Copy the key as your instructor wrote it.
  3. Does your class use an LMS instead? If your Cengage work is linked in Canvas, Blackboard or another LMS, enroll through an assignment link there.
  4. Has the class started, or has it ended? WebAssign’s help says “You can only access your active classes.” You can’t open a class that has not yet started, has ended, or that your instructor dropped you from.
  5. Did it put you in the wrong class? WebAssign’s help says “It’s possible your instructor accidentally gave you the wrong class key.” Your instructor can transfer you to the right section or give you the right key.
  6. Are you in the right Cengage account? If someone else was signed in to Cengage in the same browser, Cengage warns that an LMS enrollment can link to the wrong account. Sign out, clear cookies and try again.
  7. Still stuck? Ask your instructor, then contact Cengage support. Cengage asks you to give “Which learning platform you’re trying to access,” how you sign in, and any “Error messages or screenshots.”

Is a course key the same as an answer key?

No. A course key only enrolls you in a class. Answer keys are a separate subject, covered in is there a WebAssign answer key? and is there a Cengage MindTap answer key?, which explain who sees them and when.

Where Silent Student fits
