What Big Ideas Math answers can students see?
More than most answer-key searches assume. Here is what the publisher’s own pages say each resource gives, and to whom:
| Resource | Who opens it | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| Big Ideas Math Solutions app | Students | “The worked-out solutions of odd exercises,” step by step, in Big Ideas Math’s high school programs (help page) |
| Selected Answers | Students | Linked from a Student Edition “Help with Homework” panel under “Want to check your answers?” (the grade 7 page we checked) |
| Review after an online assignment | Students, when the teacher allows it | The answers in the Review, released “On Submission or By Teacher” (teacher help) |
| Lesson Tutorial Videos | Students | Two- to three-minute videos with “video and audio support for every example in the textbooks” (help page) |
| Worked-Out Solution Key | Teachers, in online Course Resources | “All of the textbook answers with step-by-step solutions,” plus sample answers where students are asked to explain (teacher help) |
| Answer Presentation Tool | Teachers | The answers and worked-out solutions for the exercise numbers a teacher enters, to “review homework in class” (teacher help) |
Two gaps are worth knowing. The Solutions app page names only the high school programs, and we found no matching student solutions page for the middle school books. The Student Journal, a “consumable workbook” where students “work extra problems, take notes about new concepts and classroom lessons,” comes in print and as a link in the student eBook, but we found no Big Ideas page that gives students its answers.
Does Big Ideas Math show answers after you submit?
Only if your teacher turns that on. Big Ideas Math’s teacher help says “Teachers also have control of the students’ access to the answers in the Review,” and the Release for Review setting is either On Submission or By Teacher. Set to By Teacher, the answers stay hidden until your teacher releases them. After you submit, a teacher can also Un-submit the assignment, and “The student will then have the ability to edit the assignment and re-submit it.” Wayground, formerly Quizizz, also leaves it to teacher settings whether students see correct answers (see Is there a Quizizz (Wayground) answer key?).
Why do Big Ideas Math answers from the internet get marked wrong?
The publisher’s own pages point to two reasons. First, your teacher builds the assignment: they choose the exercises, set a Check Answer Limit, which “allows teachers to set the number of times a student can check their answer,” and turn help options on or off. A list made for another class may not match yours. Second, scoring is strict about form. Big Ideas Math’s student help on incorrect answers says:
- Un-simplified fractions are scored as incorrect, and “Students should follow the methods used in solving the Big Ideas Math Examples.”
- Variables are case-sensitive, because an uppercase and a lowercase letter can stand for different quantities.
- An answer that is off by a few decimal places may be a rounding error. Enter exact answers unless the item asks you to round, and round only the final answer.
In our reading, even a correct answer copied in a different form can lose the point. We found no Big Ideas page that says online problems use randomized numbers, so we make no claim about that.
Savvas Realize is set up the same way. Its guides send teachers to Teacher Resources for answer keys, and teachers customize assignments, so a key posted online often won’t match your class (see Is there a Savvas Realize answer key?).
What help does Big Ideas Math give when you’re stuck?
A built-in ladder, if your teacher leaves it on. The student help’s remediation flow works like this:
- You enter an answer and press Check Answer.
- If it’s wrong, a Need Help? button appears, with videos and lessons on that topic and links to the matching textbook section.
- Miss it again and, on questions marked with a star, a Live Tutor button appears. Big Ideas Math says the live chat tutor works Sunday through Thursday, 4 pm to midnight Eastern, with different hours in Texas, and can be used once per question.
The textbook is open to families too. Big Ideas Math’s help says “you may access free materials by choosing your grade, state, and clicking on the Easy Access to Book link” on the BigIdeasMath.com login page.
What does Big Ideas Math record?
Scores, items and time. The teacher help says a downloaded Performance Report for an assignment includes the “students first and last name and Id, overall score on the assignment, time spent (in minutes) on the assignment,” and each item score. At schools that connect it to Canvas, “Once a student submits an assignment then their scores will pass from BigIdeasMath.com to Canvas.”
How can you use Big Ideas Math answers the honest way?
- Work an exercise, then check it against the Solutions app (high school) or Selected Answers. Do the even-numbered ones the same way.
- Watch the Lesson Tutorial Video for the example that matches your problem.
- On online homework, use Need Help? and the Live Tutor when they appear.
- Ask your teacher to release the Review after you submit, or to Un-submit if you need to fix something.
- Match the textbook examples’ form: simplify fractions, keep the variable’s case, and round only at the end.
Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a desktop app for Mac and Windows from El Dorado Ignition LLC. It has no Big Ideas Math answer key and doesn’t make one. It follows Big Ideas Math assignment links in your Canvas course and enters each answer with its general vision agent, typing math through the page’s math editor and reading the page back after each one. It has no solver written for Big Ideas Math.
- It works within your teacher’s settings. If a Check Answer Limit is set, its checks use it up the same way yours do, and the scores and time land in your Performance Report.
- Graphing is its weakest type. It cannot upload a photo or file, does not check for a test timer, and does not take tests behind a lockdown browser or proctoring tool. It can’t work the printed textbook.
- We have published no Big Ideas Math run, so we publish no accuracy figure, and its answers can be wrong. It is built for college Canvas courses, and Silent Student accounts are for ages 13 and up.
- Plans are $11.99, $24.99 or $49.99 a month, with no free plan.

How this guide was made. We read each Big Ideas Math page listed above on October 20, 2026 and quote them directly. The Selected Answers row comes from the grade 7 Help with Homework page we opened; other grades and editions may differ. The points about why outside answers get marked wrong are our reading of Big Ideas Math’s scoring help. We wrote the guide with AI assistance and checked each quote against its source.
