Why is my Canvas course not showing up?

Usually it just isn’t a favorite. Instructure says “The Card View Dashboard displays favorite courses,” so open Courses, click All Courses, and click the star next to the class. If the class is on that list in plain text with no link, it isn’t published yet. If it isn’t on the list at all, your enrollment may not have reached Canvas yet: Instructure says registered courses “may take up to 24 hours to show.”

Start here: is the course on your All Courses list?

The Dashboard is a shortcut; the All Courses page is the real list. Instructure says it “displays a list of all courses in which you are enrolled.” To open it:

  1. In Global Navigation, click Courses.
  2. Click All Courses.
  3. Find your class in the list, and note two things: which heading it sits under (current courses, Past Enrollments or Future Enrollments) and whether its name is a link.

Those two details tell you which case you’re in. Instructure’s walkthrough says active courses “are listed in blue text” with a link, and courses inside the term that aren’t available yet “are listed in black text. These courses have not been published and no link is available.”

What the All Courses list tells you

We built this table from Instructure’s student and troubleshooting guides listed below. Find the row that matches what you see.

What you see on the Canvas All Courses page, what it means, and what to do
What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do
Linked, not on DashboardIt isn’t a favorite. “Favorited courses display in your Canvas Dashboard.”Click the star next to it. A filled star means it’s a favorite.
Plain text, no linkUnpublished. “You can only access published courses.”Wait for your instructor to publish it, or ask them when they will.
Future EnrollmentsThe course belongs to an upcoming term or start date. “Some institutions may restrict the option to view or access future enrollment courses before the participation dates.”If it has a link you can view content, but you can’t fully participate until the start date.
Past EnrollmentsConcluded: a read-only archive. Past courses can’t be favorited.Open it from this list. See past courses on Canvas.
Not listed“you may not be enrolled in a course, course participation may be restricted, or your institution may not have updated the course enrollments in Canvas.”Give it 24 hours after registering, check your email for an invitation, then contact your instructor or Canvas admin.
Dropped, still listed“it may take up to 24 hours for your enrollment status to update.”Wait a day. If it’s still there, confirm the drop with your school.
Ended, still on Dashboard“it is likely that it is missing an end date in the course settings.”Students can’t change that. Favorite only the courses you want to see, or ask your instructor to add an end date.

How do you get a course back on your Dashboard?

Favorite it. On the All Courses page, click the Favorite (star) icon next to the course; Instructure says “Courses with filled stars show the course is a favorite.” Three rules from the same guide explain most surprises:

  • “You can only favorite active courses.” Future and past courses can’t be starred.
  • “After you have manually favorited at least one course, Canvas automatically favorites any new published course enrollments for you.”
  • “When no courses are favorited, the courses list automatically displays up to 20 courses alphabetically in the drop-down menu.” With more than 20 courses, some won’t be in that menu.

If your Dashboard looks nothing like Instructure’s screenshots, Instructure notes your school may be using Canvas for Elementary, which has its own Subjects and Homeroom pages.

Why is a published course still not showing?

Published isn’t the whole test. Instructure defines active courses as “courses that are published and that are within the course start and end dates.” A course that’s published but hasn’t reached its start date sits under Future Enrollments, and Instructure’s course-access chart says that if the course is unpublished or the school “Restricts students from accessing the course before the start date,” students can’t view it before that date. Your instructor or school sets those dates; a student can’t change them.

Why isn’t the course showing in the Canvas Student app?

Two reasons, both from Instructure’s app troubleshooting guide. The app follows your browser favorites: “If you cannot view your courses in the Canvas Student app, you may need to select favorite courses in your Canvas browser.” And “The Canvas Student app for iOS devices only displays active courses,” meaning published courses within their participation dates. If you haven’t favorited anything, or have no active courses, the app may show no course cards at all. Favorite the course in a browser, then reopen the app.

Did you accept the course invitation?

Some courses start with an email invitation. Instructure says the email contains your school’s Canvas URL and the email address to log in with; click Get Started, and when Canvas takes you to the course, click Accept. If you open the invite while signed in to a different Canvas account, Canvas offers Transfer Enrollment (only when the invited email is a confirmed address on that account) or Log in as the invited user. If you joined with a join code or link, Instructure warns you “may not have completed the registration process.”

What if none of this works?

Two last checks from Instructure’s list, then hand it to the people who can fix it. Confirm your browser is up to date (“Outdated browsers cannot support Canvas courses”), and make sure you’re signed in to your school’s Canvas address from the invitation email. After that, if “your institution enrolled you in a course, your enrollment may not have been set up properly”: contact your instructor or your school’s Canvas administrator. Enrollment, publishing and course dates all sit on their side.

Where Silent Student fits

We make Silent Student, a paid desktop app for Mac and Windows from El Dorado Ignition LLC that signs in to your Canvas as you, in its own browser, and works assignments in due-date order (passes start at $4.99 for a week). It can only see the courses your Canvas account can see, so it can’t open a course that isn’t published or that you aren’t enrolled in yet. Sort out enrollment first with the steps above.

Questions people ask

Why is my Canvas course not showing on my Dashboard?

The Card View Dashboard shows favorite courses. Open Courses, then All Courses, and click the star next to the course to favorite it. Only active courses can be favorited.

Why is my course published but not showing in Canvas?

A course also has to be within its start and end dates to count as active. Instructure says some schools restrict students from future courses before the participation dates.

How long does it take for a class to show up on Canvas?

Instructure says that once you are registered, courses may take up to 24 hours to show in Canvas. After that, ask your instructor or your school's Canvas administrator.

Why is my course in the All Courses list but I can't click it?

Courses listed without a link are unpublished. You can only open published courses, so your instructor or school has to publish it.

Why aren't my courses showing in the Canvas Student app?

The app shows your favorite courses, chosen in a browser. The iPhone and iPad app only shows active courses, meaning published courses within their participation dates.

Why is an old course still on my Canvas Dashboard?

Instructure says a finished course still on your Dashboard is likely missing an end date. Students can't change it; you can unfavorite courses to control the Dashboard instead.
