What is the MyLab Math Study Plan?
It is a practice area built from your own results. Pearson says the Study Plan “lets you practice questions that are very similar to the questions in your assignments,” and that “when you are ready, you can take a test or quiz to prove that you have mastered the material.” If your instructor allows it, you can use learning aids such as videos and animations while you practice.
Each student’s plan is different. The Study Plan Results page lists “the homework, assigned tests and quizzes, and practice tests that are used to determine mastery in your Study Plan,” so your recommendations follow your own scores.
Not every course has one. Pearson notes that “some courses do not offer the Study Plan,” and that your instructor “also can choose to hide the Study Plan.” If it is hidden, you can still practice from the Study Plan Contents page.
Does the Study Plan count toward your grade?
That comes down to settings your instructor controls. Pearson says your instructor “can decide when and how you can use the Study Plan and can choose whether you get a score for your work.” Here is how each part of the Study Plan relates to your grade.
| Part of the Study Plan | Can it change your grade? | What Pearson says |
|---|---|---|
| Practice questions | No | “Click Practice to work on a recommendation without affecting your score.” |
| Quiz Me quizzes | Only if your instructor counts Study Plan work | Results “do not affect your grade in your course, unless your instructor includes your Study Plan work in your overall score.” |
| Mastery points | Only if Study Plan scoring is on | You see the mastery points you have earned “if your instructor allows scoring in the Study Plan.” |
| Study Plan prerequisites | Not directly. They come before a test or quiz | Your instructor can assign Study Plan work “as a prerequisite for tests or quizzes.” |
An unscored Study Plan is practice for the homework, quizzes and tests that do count. A scored one is one of the five categories that make up your MyLab average.
How do you check if your Study Plan is scored?
Look at the category weights in your MyLab gradebook. Pearson says your scores go into one of five Gradebook categories: Homework, Quizzes, Tests, Other, and “Study Plan for the practice questions you do from the Study Plan.” Each category has a point value, and “if a category is assigned 0 (zero) points, it does not count toward your class average.”
- Open the Results page in your MyLab course.
- Click Show Overall Score. Pearson notes “This option does not appear in all courses.” Pearson’s help also describes the overall score shown as a percentage at the top of the Results page, with a Show details link that explains how it is calculated.
- Find the Study Plan row. Pearson says the Overall Score page shows “your average in each category, the weight of each category, the points you earned in each category, and your overall score.”
- If the Study Plan weight is 0, Study Plan work does not count toward your average.
Pearson’s own example weights Homework at 30 points, Quizzes at 25, Tests at 50, Other at 10 and Study Plan at 0, and concludes that “Study Plan work does not contribute to your average at all.” That is Pearson’s example. Your instructor sets the real weights, so read the numbers in your own course, or ask. To see what a weighted category does to your total, try the weighted grade calculator.
What are the Study Plan Recommendations and Progress pages?
They are the two possible Study Plan home pages, and your instructor picks which one opens. Pearson says you see either the Recommendations page, “where you see recommendations for what to work on next,” or the Progress page, “where you see detailed information on all your work in your Study Plan.” A third page, Study Plan Contents, lists the whole book.
| Page | What it shows | Details from Pearson |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendations | Five recommendations for what to work on next | The top one, marked with an orange or purple pushpin, is the one to do first. On the right you see “how many points you will receive when you master the material.” |
| Progress | How many sections or objectives you have mastered, practiced and have left, plus your mastery points | Sections are color-coded: dark blue for mastered, light blue for practiced, pale blue for not practiced. |
| Contents | Every chapter, section and objective in your textbook | Shows Earned and Possible mastery points and Time Spent. “Show What I Need to Study” lists only material you have not yet taken a test on. |
Where it is available, a recommended media icon next to a recommendation opens media for that section, such as a video or a PowerPoint show.
How does Quiz Me work in MyLab Math?
Quiz Me is a short quiz that proves you have mastered one section or objective. Pearson describes the usual path like this:
- Click Practice on a recommendation and work the questions. Pearson says “you can practice as much as you want.”
- After you have answered all the practice questions correctly, “the Quiz Me button turns green.”
- Take the Quiz Me, answer all the questions and submit it.
- Read the Quiz Me Summary page. Review Test shows “the correct answers and your answers.”
A few rules from Pearson’s help are worth knowing first:
- “If you take a Quiz Me quiz and do not prove mastery, you have to practice again before you can take another Quiz Me.”
- Save for Later lets you finish a quiz later. “However, you cannot rework any questions that you have already answered.”
- If your instructor hides Quiz Me, you see a “Ready to prove mastery” link instead.
You can also pick your own section: click View All Chapters, expand the list on the Contents page, click the section or objective, then click Quiz Me at the top of the Study Plan Overview page.
What are mastery points in MyLab Math?
Mastery points are the Study Plan’s unit of progress. Pearson says: “For each section or objective that you master on a Quiz Me, you get one mastery point in your Study Plan.” The Contents page shows the points you have earned and the points possible for each part of the book.
Quiz Me is not the only way to earn them. Pearson says you see a mastery icon “after you have proved mastery on a test, quiz, or Quiz Me,” and when a Study Plan prerequisite covers concepts you already mastered, “mastery points have been awarded for your earlier work.” Whether those points reach your grade goes back to the Study Plan weight in your gradebook.
Can a Study Plan be required before a MyLab test?
Yes, if your instructor sets it up that way. Pearson says that when your instructor “assigns Study Plan work as a prerequisite for tests or quizzes,” the Show Study Plan for dropdown lists those tests and quizzes. Choose one and click Go to see only the Study Plan work for it, with a progress bar of the mastery points you have earned and still need.
When you have completed the recommendations, Pearson says “you are ready to take the test or quiz.” It adds that your instructor “might customize the required recommendations so that you do not need to do all the recommended Study Plan work.” For how many tries you get on the test itself, see MyLab Math attempts and partial credit. Whether the test is locked down is covered in our MyLab Math proctoring guide.
Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a desktop app for Mac and Windows from El Dorado Ignition LLC. It works MyLab Math homework opened from Canvas, inside the tries your instructor set, and it does not take proctored or LockDown Browser tests. Pearson’s terms bar unpermitted automated tools, which in our reading reaches Silent Student; our guide to platform AI rules quotes them, and Silent Student on MyMathLab has the details.
