Is McGraw Hill Connect proctored?

Only on the assignments your instructor sets up that way. Connect’s proctoring is Proctorio, a browser extension for Chrome or Edge that comes with Connect titles from 2019 on, and a proctored assignment carries “Proctoring Enabled” in its title. Your instructor picks the settings: the free Basic package can lock the browser and record your webcam, and the paid Plus package can also record audio, your screen and the web pages you visit.

How do you know if a Connect assignment is proctored?

Look at the assignment list. McGraw Hill’s student user guide says you can see which assignments are proctored “by looking for the Proctoring Enabled label in the assignment name, and the shield icon to the right of the assignment listing.” Settings can differ by assignment, and the pre-check shows you which ones apply, in this order:

  1. A pop-up lists what you need: Chrome or Edge with the Proctorio extension, and, depending on the settings, “a form of payment to pay for the proctoring session, a webcam, and/or a microphone.”
  2. The Before you Begin page shows “which activities will be restricted and what information will be collected during the assignment.”
  3. A system diagnostics test checks your connection and, if the settings call for it, your webcam and microphone.
  4. Depending on the settings: an ID check, a webcam image test that captures five images, a desk scan, and an exam agreement to accept or sign.
  5. The assignment opens with a Quiz Tools window. On a timed assignment, the timer starts here.

McGraw Hill asks you to allow extra time, and says the pre-check “does NOT count against your assignment time.”

Does McGraw Hill Connect record you?

Only if your instructor turns recording on, and only during the proctored assignment. McGraw Hill’s own wording is that Proctorio “may include recording of video, audio, and screen activity or none of the above.” Its Proctorio page lists what each option captures, and its package comparison shows which come with the free Basic package and which need Plus, listed at $17.50:

What Proctorio in McGraw Hill Connect can record or restrict, by package
SettingWhat McGraw Hill says it doesBasic (free)Plus ($17.50)
Record video“Records video from the student’s webcam”YesYes
Record audio“Records audio from the student’s microphone”NoYes
Record screen“Records the student’s screen”NoYes
Record web traffic“Records the web pages the student visits”NoYes
Desk scan“Records the student’s test-taking environment,” at exam start or periodicallyNoYes
ID verificationYou show an ID card “that is automatically captured and stored”NoYes
Integrity agreementYou “digitally sign an integrity agreement before the assessment”YesYes
Browser lockingControls access to other tabs and programs, and can block extra monitors, copy and paste, right-click, printing, downloads and other extensionsYesYes

So a Basic-package test can record your webcam, though not your audio or screen. McGraw Hill says Proctorio Plus “will flag potential audio and web AI use and mobile usage,” shown to instructors in Connect’s Proctoring Reports Dashboard.

Does McGraw Hill Connect use your camera?

When your instructor requires video, yes. The user guide says that, depending on the settings, Proctorio “may ask you to provide permission to access your webcam or microphone,” and that “Access is only required while you are taking a proctored assignment.” You click Allow in the browser prompt. With record video on, you check that your face shows on the System Diagnostics Test page and may do a webcam image test. An ID check means holding a photo ID up to the webcam. A desk scan can come at the start “and/or randomly throughout the exam.”

Does McGraw Hill Connect record your screen?

Only when your course has the Plus package and your instructor turned on record screen, and you are asked first. “If your instructor enabled record screen for the assignment, Proctorio will perform a desktop check, asking you to share the screen where you are taking your assignment,” the guide says. You pick the screen and click Share. “If your instructor does not require record screen, you will not see this prompt.” During the test, a “Proctorio is sharing your screen” message appears, and a Hide link moves it out of the way.

What happens if you leave the test window?

If your instructor turned on force full screen, the assignment fills the screen and “you will not be able to access any other applications or programs.” The instructor also sets a tolerance. At 30 or 15 seconds, you have that long to close other windows or tabs “before you are kicked out of the assignment.” At 0 seconds, “You will immediately be kicked out.” A warning counts down first, and if it runs out the exam ends and logs you out.

What do you need for a proctored Connect test?

  • A supported device. The latest Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a desktop or laptop (“PC, Mac, Linux are all fine”), a Chromebook, or a Microsoft Surface tablet. iPhones, iPads and Android phones “are not supported for proctored assignments.”
  • The Proctorio extension. You add it once. McGraw Hill says Proctorio “only runs while you are taking your proctored Connect assignment,” and that you may uninstall it afterward and reinstall it before the next one.
  • A webcam and microphone, if the settings call for them.
  • A direct connection. “Virtual machines and proxy connections will not work.”
  • Possibly a fee. “Depending on how your course is set up, you may need to pay a one-time proctoring fee.”

How should you get ready for a proctored Connect test?

Take the practice quiz if there is one: McGraw Hill says “Test takers are encouraged to use a practice exam to test their system prior to taking an exam.” Install the extension ahead of time, keep your photo ID nearby, and sit somewhere well lit, since the webcam test wants a face that is “well lit, centered, and clearly visible.” If something breaks during the pre-check, click the Proctorio extension icon for 24/7 live chat. McGraw Hill says to ask the agent for a case number and keep it: “This will be required if you need to document any issues.” Connect technical support is at 800-331-5094.

Who sees what Proctorio records?

Your instructor and your school. The user guide says your information “will ONLY be accessible to your instructor and school, no one else.” The syllabus text McGraw Hill writes for instructors says “only I or approved individuals here at our institution will have access to your exam data,” and that “only I will make a judgment as to any potential academic integrity violation.”

Where Silent Student fits

We make Silent Student, a desktop app for Mac and Windows from El Dorado Ignition LLC that works Connect homework from your Canvas course. It does not take proctored tests: tests that need Proctorio, Respondus LockDown Browser or Honorlock do not open in its browser, and it does not hide from or switch off any proctoring setting. Take those tests yourself, under your school’s academic-integrity policy. More: Silent Student on McGraw Hill Connect.

McGraw Hill’s guides describe asking first. No. McGraw Hill says iPhones, iPads and Android phones are not supported for proctored assignments. Use Chrome or Edge on a computer, a Chromebook or a Microsoft Surface tablet.

Do you have to pay for Connect proctoring?

Does the pre-check use up time on a timed Connect test?

No. McGraw Hill says the pre-check does not count against your assignment time. The timer starts when the assignment opens after it.
