What locks an Edgenuity test?
Course rules, plus settings your teacher or district chose. Imagine Learning’s guides describe each one. Find the row that matches what you see.
| What is happening | What Imagine Learning says | Who clears it |
|---|---|---|
| The next activity won’t open | “You must complete the entire activity to be able to move on to the next one.” | You, by finishing the activity you are in |
| A quiz or test is waiting for your teacher (Teacher Review) | Students should know “some assessments will be locked, and they will need to wait for you to review their work and unlock the assessments.” | Your teacher |
| You failed it and have no attempts left | “Student failed all assessment attempts and is out of retakes.” | Your teacher, by adding a retake |
| The test won’t open from home (IP Registry) | IP Registry “can block students from accessing assessments from home.” | Nobody at home. You take it at school. |
| The test needs a locked browser | Districts can turn on the Proctorio Lockdown Browser or the SecureLock Browser Experience. | Your school’s setup |
| Questions you saw before are gone (Save & Exit) | Students “will not be able to return to any questions they have already seen once they re-open the assessment.” | Nobody. It is a course setting. |
Why won’t Edgenuity let me move on?
Because the activity you are in isn’t finished. The student quick start guide (written for Los Angeles Unified in 2019 and hosted by Imagine Learning) says to “Follow the frames at the bottom and click the arrow to continue through the activity,” and adds, “You must complete the entire activity to be able to move on to the next one.” Once it is complete, you click Next Activity at the bottom right of the screen.
If you are stuck, go back through the frames at the bottom of the player and finish any you haven’t. The Next Activity button on your course tile lets you “jump directly back to where you ended.”
A passed target date doesn’t lock the course by itself. Imagine Learning’s educator guide says a student can “work in the course past the target date if needed to continue and complete the course to earn credit.”
What is Teacher Review in Edgenuity?
A proctoring setting that holds tests until your teacher checks your work. Imagine Learning says Teacher Review “alerts a teacher when a student has reached a test or exam. The teacher can then check the student’s work before unlocking a high-stakes assessment.” Its academic integrity flyer adds that “Students must complete an unlocked assessment while the teacher is proctoring and cannot open the assessment offsite.”
Teachers may set rules for what earns an unlock. Edgenuity’s planning guide for teachers suggests criteria such as “students must have taken notes, must have achieved a certain score on practice activities or assignments.” Ask your teacher what they check, so the work is ready before you ask.
How do you get a locked Edgenuity test unlocked?
Only your teacher can unlock it. You can make it quick:
- Finish everything before the test in your Course Map, including any notes your teacher asked for.
- Check your Course Map for feedback. Edgenuity’s planning guide tells teachers to remind students to “check their Course Map to see whether they have any graded activities with feedback,” and feedback shows as an alert at the top of the course page.
- Tell your teacher the test is ready, in class or through Edgenuity email, which sits at the top right of your Student Home page. Name the course and the test.
- If you are at home and the test won’t open, it may be set for school only. Take it there.
- For a technical problem, open the Help Center from the menu under your name.
Your teacher sees you at the top of their dashboard. The educator guide says “Students who need support will appear at the top of the Dashboard list.”
Can you retake or redo assignments on Edgenuity?
Quizzes and tests, usually yes. The student guide says “If you fail an assessment, you can access an additional attempt to raise your score.” The number of attempts and the passing score are your teacher’s settings. Edgenuity’s planning guide asks teachers, “How many attempts will students have on assessments? What is the passing threshold?”
When the attempts run out, one of two things happens, depending on a course setting:
- You are blocked until your teacher acts. The teacher gets the red alert, “Educator needs to add retake, or take other action.” The planning guide suggests teachers may ask students to “show you their notes, re-watch instruction, meet with you for tutoring” before another attempt.
- Auto-progression moves you on. The planning guide describes students who are “awarded a failing grade and move on,” which it says “is called ‘auto-progression’ in Edgenuity’s course settings.” Imagine Learning’s flyer says automatic progression “will record the student’s highest score in the gradebook once the maximum attempts are met.”
For assignments and other activities that aren’t quizzes or tests, the Imagine Learning guides we read don’t describe a redo. Ask your teacher. To see what one quiz score does to your course grade, try the Edgenuity grade calculator.
Why can’t I open my Edgenuity test at home?
Your district may have turned on IP Registry. Imagine Learning says it “can block students from accessing assessments from home,” or block Imagine Edgenuity entirely outside the school network. If a student reaches an assessment while working at home, its flyer says, the system can let the student keep working, and the student “will automatically be presented with that assessment when they return to school.” Teacher Review has a similar rule: students “cannot open the assessment offsite.”
Does Edgenuity use a lockdown browser for tests?
It can, if your district sets one up. Imagine Learning lists two district-level settings. The Proctorio Lockdown Browser is a browser extension that “blocks userscripts and bots on Edgenuity and EdgeEX assessments” and “works on both district-managed and student-owned devices.” The SecureLock Browser Experience “prevents students from opening new tabs, browsers, or programs while they’re working in Imagine Edgenuity.” If your school uses one, your teacher can tell you how to open the test.
Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a desktop app that works Edgenuity lessons linked from Canvas. It does not take Edgenuity tests or exams, never unlocks an assessment or adds a retake, and does not run in a lockdown browser. Imagine Learning’s End User Terms of Service also bar using code to “answer questions provided through the Services,” so read them and your school’s policy, and see Silent Student on Edgenuity for the rest.
Questions people ask
Why is my Edgenuity test locked?
Usually because Teacher Review is on and your teacher has to unlock it, or because you failed it and are out of retakes. Either way, only your teacher can clear it.
How do I unlock a locked assignment on Edgenuity?
You can’t unlock it yourself. Finish the activities before it, then ask your teacher, whose dashboard shows an alert that reads “Educator needs to unlock assessment.”
Why won’t Edgenuity let me move on?
The activity you are in isn’t finished. Edgenuity says you must complete the entire activity to be able to move on to the next one.
Can you retake tests on Edgenuity?
Usually. The student guide says a failed assessment gives you an additional attempt. When you are out of attempts, your teacher has to add a retake, unless auto-progression moves you on.
Can you redo assignments on Edgenuity?
The Imagine Learning guides we read describe extra attempts for quizzes and tests only. Ask your teacher about other activities.
Why can’t I take my Edgenuity test at home?
Your district may use IP Registry, which can block assessments from home. Imagine Learning says the test is presented again when you return to school.
Does the target date lock an Edgenuity course?
Not by itself. Imagine Learning says students can work past the target date to complete the course and earn credit.
