Edgenuity grade calculator: Overall, Actual and Relative grade
Edgenuity’s Actual grade is your Overall grade multiplied by your progress ratio (percent complete divided by target percent complete) when you are behind. In Edgenuity’s own example, an Overall grade of 76.67% at 10% complete against a 20% target is an Actual grade of 38.33%. The Relative grade counts every activity you have not finished as a zero, so in the same example it is 6.17%. Enter your scores below to get all three.

What are the three Edgenuity grades?
Edgenuity reports three grade metrics for each course. Its guide says they are “designed to be used for different purposes,” and that “your school or district may select one or more of these metrics to use throughout the school year.” Here is what each one measures, in Edgenuity’s words, and how to work it out.
| Grade | Edgenuity’s definition | How to calculate it |
|---|---|---|
| Overall grade | “The weighted average grade for completed activities based on the grade weights for each type of activity.” | Average each category, weight the categories that have scores, and divide by the weights you used. |
| Actual grade | “The overall grade adjusted for progress if a student is behind.” | Overall × (percent complete ÷ target percent complete). On or ahead of target, Actual = Overall. |
| Relative grade | “The grade a student would receive if they stopped working and received 0% for all unscored, counted activities.” | Count every activity not yet scored as 0, average each category over all its activities, and weight every category. |

How is the Overall grade calculated?
The Overall grade only looks at work you have finished. Each category, such as quizzes or tests, gets the average of its scores. The categories are then combined using the weights your course sets.
A category with no scores yet does not pull your grade down. Its weight is shared out among the categories that have scores, in proportion to their own weights. In Edgenuity’s example, exams carry 70% of the grade but have no scores yet, so the remaining weights of 10% (quizzes) and 20% (tests) become one third and two thirds of the Overall grade. In Edgenuity’s words, “twice as much goes to tests, since tests are currently weighted twice as much as quizzes.”
Overall = sum of (weight × category average) ÷ sum of the weights of categories with scores
This is why your Overall grade can jump when the first score in a new category arrives. The first exam score in the example would suddenly carry 70% of the grade.
Why is my Edgenuity Actual grade so low?
Because you are behind your target. Edgenuity multiplies your Overall grade by your progress ratio, which is the percent of the course you have completed divided by the percent you are expected to have completed by now. Halfway to your target means half your Overall grade.
Actual = Overall × (percent complete ÷ target percent complete)
The adjustment only applies when you are behind. Once your percent complete reaches the target, the ratio is 1 and your Actual grade equals your Overall grade. So the way to raise a low Actual grade is to complete the assigned work, at the same quality, until you reach your target. The calculator shows how your Actual grade climbs at each step between where you are and the target, assuming your scores stay the same.

What does the Relative grade mean in Edgenuity?
The Relative grade is the grade you would get if you stopped now. Every activity that counts toward your grade but has no score yet is treated as a 0. Each category is averaged over all of its activities, finished or not, and every category keeps its full weight.
Early in a course this number is very low, because most activities are still zeros. It rises as you finish work and reaches your Overall grade when every counted activity has a score. It shows what your grade would be if the remaining work were never done.
Edgenuity’s worked example, step by step
This is the example from Edgenuity’s guide. The “Fill in Edgenuity’s example” button in the calculator loads it, so you can check every number.
| Category | Weight | Scores so far | Not yet scored |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quizzes | 10% | 100, 80 | 10 |
| Tests | 20% | 70 | 2 |
| Exams | 70% | none | 1 |
The student is 10% of the way through the course, and the target is 20%.
- Overall: quizzes average 90 and tests average 70. With the exam weight shared out, quizzes count one third and tests two thirds: (90 + 70 + 70) ÷ 3 = 76.67%.
- Actual: the progress ratio is 10 ÷ 20 = 0.5, so the Actual grade is 0.5 × 76.67 = 38.33%.
- Relative: the 10 quizzes, 2 tests and 1 exam not yet done count as 0. Quizzes are (100 + 80) ÷ 12 = 15%, tests are 70 ÷ 3 = 23.33% and exams are 0%. Weighted 10, 20 and 70, that is (1.5 + 4.67 + 0) = 6.17%. Edgenuity’s sheet shows it as 6.167%.
Which Edgenuity grade counts on my report card?
It depends on your school. Edgenuity’s guide says a school or district may choose one or more of the three metrics for the year, and that some “may allow the teachers to decide which to use.” Imagine Learning’s student goal sheet for Imagine Edgenuity asks students to record all three, Overall, Actual and Relative, from their progress overview each week. Ask your teacher which one goes into your report card grade.
When this calculator and Edgenuity differ
- The weights are different. Your school sets the category weights. Use the ones shown in your course, not the 10, 20 and 70 from the example.
- Activities are not equal in your course. Edgenuity’s guide averages the scores in a category equally. If your course counts some activities more than others, enter the score your progress report shows for each category instead.
- The count of unfinished activities is off. The Relative grade depends on how many counted activities are still unscored. A wrong count changes it a lot early in the course.
- The target is from another day. Use the target percent your progress report shows when you calculate, since the Actual grade depends on it.
- Rounding. This calculator rounds to two decimals at the end. Edgenuity may round steps differently, so expect small gaps.
To see how a single category score affects a course graded by weights outside Edgenuity, use the weighted grade calculator. For one test or quiz, the test grade calculator gives the percentage and how many you can miss. The final grade calculator works out what you need on a final exam.
Edgenuity grade calculator FAQ
What is the Actual grade in Edgenuity?
It is your Overall grade adjusted for progress when you are behind. Edgenuity multiplies the Overall grade by your progress ratio, percent complete divided by target percent complete. At 10% complete with a 20% target, an Overall grade of 76.67% becomes an Actual grade of 38.33%.
What is the difference between the Overall and Actual grade in Edgenuity?
The Overall grade is the weighted average of the work you have completed. The Actual grade is the same number scaled down by how far behind your target you are. If you are on or ahead of your target, the two are the same.
What is the Relative grade in Edgenuity?
It is the grade you would get if you stopped working now. Every activity that counts but has no score yet is counted as 0%. In Edgenuity’s example it is 6.167%, against an Overall grade of 76.67%.
Why is my Edgenuity grade so low?
If it is your Actual grade, you are probably behind your target percent complete, and the grade is scaled down by your progress ratio. If it is your Relative grade, the unfinished activities are counted as zeros. Your Overall grade only counts finished work.
Does catching up fix my Actual grade?
Yes, if your scores hold. Edgenuity only adjusts the Actual grade when you are behind, so once your percent complete reaches the target, your Actual grade equals your Overall grade.
Which Edgenuity grade goes on my report card?
Your school decides. Edgenuity says a school or district may pick one or more of the metrics, and some let teachers choose. Ask your teacher which one they use.
Does this calculator send or save my grades?
No. The math runs in your browser, and the numbers and names you type are not sent to any server or stored on your device. Close the tab and they are gone. Like every page on this site, the page itself is counted in our visit statistics, which never include what you type.
