How long does the IXL Diagnostic take?
About an hour per subject for the first round. IXL’s FAQ on the diagnostic says students should first “aim to diagnose until they reveal complete diagnostic data,” and that this “should take about 45 minutes to 1 hour per subject and can be done over multiple sessions.” Its implementation guide for the LevelUp Diagnostic in Real-Time mode gives a similar figure: “It only takes about 45 minutes for students to get full diagnostic levels in one subject.”
The time is per subject. A student diagnosing both math and English language arts should expect roughly 90 minutes to 2 hours in total by IXL’s figures, spread over as many sittings as needed. That total is our arithmetic, not an IXL number. The IXL pages we read don’t give a fixed question count for the first round. It runs until the diagnostic has enough answers to place you.
| Stage | What IXL says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| First levels, Real-Time Diagnostic (now the Flex Diagnostic in Real-Time mode) | “about 45 minutes to 1 hour per subject,” over “multiple sessions” if needed | IXL blog FAQ |
| First levels, LevelUp Diagnostic in Real-Time mode | “about 45 minutes” for full levels in one subject | IXL teacher guide |
| Keeping levels current | “about 10 to 15 questions per week” | Both |
| How often LevelUp levels move | “about every 40 questions” | IXL teacher guide |
| LevelUp Benchmarks | A timer appears “when a student has 30 seconds left on any question” | IXL, November 2025 update |
Does the IXL Diagnostic ever end?
Not in Real-Time mode, which is built to run all year. IXL’s FAQ says that after the first levels, “students should answer about 10 to 15 questions per week in the Real-Time Diagnostic. This will ensure that their levels stay current all year long!” The LevelUp guide calls this step “Keep levels up to date” and says “With just a handful of questions each week, your students’ levels will update periodically.”
So the diagnostic stops for now and opens again later. When you have answered enough, IXL shows a notice that reads “Your diagnostic is currently complete.” IXL says students see it “once they’ve completed their initial diagnostic or answered enough questions to keep their levels up to date,” and that it means the diagnostic “has enough data to determine their levels.” The word “currently” matters. Next week’s questions start the cycle again.
Benchmark mode runs on your school’s schedule instead. IXL’s teacher guide describes Real-Time mode as a way to see levels “in between benchmark windows.”
How do you know you’re done with the IXL Diagnostic?
Watch the levels and the notice. IXL says levels “appear as a range of numbers when the Real-Time Diagnostic doesn’t have complete data yet. As students answer diagnostic questions, that range will shrink.” Once there is enough information, IXL pinpoints each level “to a single number, represented by a star.” When the ranges have turned into starred numbers and the “currently complete” notice appears, the first round is done.
What the numbers mean is a separate question. On IXL’s scale a level of 400 means ready to start 4th-grade material, and the IXL Diagnostic score chart reads any score against grade level and national percentiles.
What is the IXL Diagnostic arena?
The arena is where you answer diagnostic questions. IXL’s teacher guide starts with “Visit the arena” and tells teachers to “Have students answer questions until all of their levels are up to date.” The weekly upkeep happens there too: “Answer 10-15 questions in the arena per week.”
Teachers can send you there. IXL’s FAQ says that once a teacher suggests the diagnostic, “the Diagnostic arena will appear on students’ suggested skills list on their Recommendations page.” Teachers can also watch it live, and the guide says they get “an alert in Live Classroom when a student may be rushing through the Diagnostic.”
How does the IXL Diagnostic work?
You answer questions in the arena, IXL turns your answers into levels, and the levels drive an action plan. IXL’s FAQ says the diagnostic “assesses students’ current knowledge, pinpoints their grade-level proficiency, and creates a personalized action plan.” The LevelUp guide says IXL “creates a personalized action plan for each student,” with recommended skills students can click straight into.
- Answer questions in the arena until each level shows a star.
- Work the recommended skills in your action plan. The LevelUp guide suggests working on them “until they reach proficiency (a SmartScore of 80)”. Here is how the IXL SmartScore works.
- Come back each week for 10 to 15 more questions, so the levels keep up with what you have learned.
That loop is the reason to take the diagnostic honestly: a level that is off sends you to skills that don’t fit.
Flex, LevelUp or Real-Time: which IXL Diagnostic is this?
IXL renamed its diagnostics in March 2025, and older guides still use the old names. Its blog post on the change says:
- The “IXL Flex Diagnostic for PreK-12 math and ELA” was “previously the IXL Classic Diagnostic or IXL Real-Time Diagnostic.” It runs in “Benchmark mode (previously known as Snapshot mode) and Real-Time mode.”
- The “IXL LevelUp™ Diagnostic for PreK-12 math” was “previously the IXL LevelUp Math Benchmark Assessment.” The post says it is “currently available in Benchmark mode and Real-Time mode for PreK-12 math.” IXL’s newer teacher guide for its Real-Time mode covers “PreK-12 math and ELA.”
Real-Time is a mode that both diagnostics have, and the timing above applies to it in both.
Can you reset the IXL Diagnostic?
Not directly. IXL’s November 2025 product update added a way for lead admins to reset a student’s LevelUp Benchmark results, and it says “Admins cannot reset Real-Time mode scores.” The details from that post:
- Only lead admins can do it, from the LevelUp Diagnostic Results report, and only for “Benchmarks that are in an active Benchmark window.”
- A reset clears “student scores, strand levels, recommendations, and Action Plans” from admin, teacher and student reports.
- Real-Time scores based on that Benchmark are cleared too, and “The student whose Benchmark was reset can retake the Benchmark.”
The IXL pages we read describe no reset that a student can do. Real-Time levels keep updating as you answer, about every 40 questions in LevelUp, so later answers change them. If something went wrong during a Benchmark, tell your teacher, who can take it to your school’s IXL admin.
Is the IXL Diagnostic accurate?
IXL says so, and it ties accuracy to answering regularly. Its March 2025 post says the LevelUp Diagnostic was built “to meet the highest standards of validity, accuracy, and reliability,” and that the Flex Diagnostic “is nationally normed and research-proven to be a strong predictor of student achievement.” Those are IXL’s claims about its own test. We have not tested them.
The teacher guide adds a condition: “To get always-accurate data, make sure students are updating their levels weekly!”
Where Silent Student fits
We make Silent Student, a desktop study app for Mac and Windows. It does not take IXL diagnostics: the levels decide which skills IXL recommends to you, so they should come from your own answers. IXL’s Terms of Service, effective September 30, 2026, also bar AI agents from the service, and what Silent Student does on IXL skills linked from Canvas is on Silent Student on IXL.
Questions people ask
How long does the IXL Diagnostic take?
About 45 minutes to 1 hour per subject for the first levels, by IXL’s figures, and it can be split over several sessions. After that IXL asks for about 10 to 15 questions a week.
Does the IXL Diagnostic ever end?
Only for now. IXL shows “Your diagnostic is currently complete” once it has enough data, but Real-Time mode is meant to run all year with a few questions each week.
How many questions are on the IXL Diagnostic?
The IXL pages we read don’t give a fixed number. The first round runs until your levels are complete. In the LevelUp Diagnostic, levels then update about every 40 questions.
Can you stop the IXL Diagnostic and finish later?
Yes. IXL says the first round of about 45 minutes to 1 hour per subject can be done over multiple sessions.
Can you reset the IXL Diagnostic?
Lead admins can reset a LevelUp Benchmark during an active Benchmark window, and the student can then retake it. IXL says admins cannot reset Real-Time mode scores.
What is the IXL Diagnostic arena?
The place in IXL where you answer diagnostic questions. If your teacher suggests the diagnostic, the arena appears on your Recommendations page.
Does Silent Student take IXL diagnostics?
No. It does not take IXL diagnostics, and IXL’s Terms of Service bar AI agents.
