How to read the chart

Every row is one possible number wrong. The score is the share of questions right, as a percent:

score = (questions − wrong) / questions × 100

On a 20-question test each question is worth 100 / 20 = 5 points, so 3 wrong is 17 / 20 = 85%. On a 30-question test each is worth 3.33, so 3 wrong is 90%. The letter comes from the scale you choose, read from the exact score: 89.99 is still a B on a scale where A starts at 90.

How many can you miss on a test of 5 to 100 questions

This table settles the usual question in one look: the most a student can miss and still get each grade, on the simple 90/80/70/60 scale with whole questions and no rounding. A dash means the grade can’t be reached even with a perfect paper, which never happens here, because 0 wrong is always 100%.

Half points

Turn on half points when a question can get partial credit. The chart then moves in steps of 0.5 wrong, so on a 10-question test 1.5 wrong is 85%. The rows double, but the formula is the same.

Rounding to a whole percent

Some teachers round a score before giving the letter, so 89.5% counts as 90%. That can change a grade near a cutoff. On a 23-question test, 7 wrong is 69.57%: a D without rounding, a C with it. Tick the rounding box if that is how you grade. The table above uses no rounding.

Letter scales

The simple scale gives A at 90, B at 80, C at 70 and D at 60. The plus/minus scale splits each band (A 93, A− 90, B+ 87, B 83 and so on). Schools set their own scale, so pick the one that matches yours. To turn a single student’s raw score into a percent, the test grade calculator also takes points, and the grade curve calculator shows what a curve does to a whole class.

Easy grader FAQ

How does an easy grader work?

It divides the number right by the number of questions and multiplies by 100, for every possible number wrong. On 20 questions, each one is worth 5 points.

How many can you miss on a 20-question test and get an A?

Two, on a 90% A. Two wrong is 90%; three wrong is 85%.

How many can you miss on a 50-question test to pass with a 70?

Fifteen. 35 out of 50 is 70%; 16 wrong is 68%.

What is 7 wrong out of 25?

72%. Each question on a 25-question test is worth 4 points, so 18 right is 72%.

Does it handle half points?

Yes. Tick “Allow half points” and the chart moves in steps of 0.5 wrong.

Is anything I type saved?

No. The chart is computed in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.

How this page was made. Drafted with AI and checked by Silent Student on November 2, 2026. The tables were generated by the same code the grader runs, and that code was checked against a brute-force count for every test length from 1 to 100, with and without half points and rounding.
