Houston Community College · Eagle Online / Canvas (direct login, no 2FA)

Does Silent Student work at HCC?

Yes — on Eagle Online, with no SSO portal and no 2FA to clear.

Eagle Online is Instructure Canvas with a direct Canvas login — HCC's Microsoft Authenticator MFA explicitly does not apply to it, which makes HCC the simplest setup in this directory. All four courses we looked at use platforms Silent Student covers, though College Algebra comes with a real caveat about which section you are in.

Four HCC courses — and why so many are OpenStax

Of the 4 HCC courses we looked at, Silent Student covers the courseware behind 2 and partly covers 2.

These are four high-enrollment HCC courses. HCC leans on free OpenStax texts for several of them, which is why so much of this list is native Canvas work with nothing to buy — but sections still differ, especially in math.

GOVT 2305 Covered

Federal Government

Native Canvas

GOVT 2305 uses the free OpenStax American Government OER text, so its graded quizzes, essays, and discussions are done directly in Eagle Online with no paid platform; Silent Student completes them in native Canvas and holds written work for your approval.

PSYC 2301 Covered

General Psychology

Native Canvas

PSYC 2301 uses the free OpenStax Psychology 2e text inside the Canvas course — nothing to buy — so quizzes, discussions, and study-guide work are completed natively in Eagle Online, with the written pieces held in Draft Review for your review.

ACCT 2301 Partly covered

Principles of Financial Accounting

McGraw Hill Connect

ACCT 2301 requires McGraw Hill Connect (Wild, Financial Accounting Fundamentals, 8th ed.), opened from the Canvas link. The SmartBook readings have a dedicated solver; the Connect chapter homework and quizzes do not, so the general visual agent attempts those and results vary by question type.

McGraw Hill solver →
MATH 1314 Partly covered

College Algebra

WebAssign

Cengage publishes a custom WebAssign package for HCC's College Algebra 0314/1314 corequisite sequence, and WebAssign sections do their homework online; Silent Student enters each part in the equation editor with proper subscript and superscript notation, one question at a time. Confirm your section first — some College Algebra sections use Pearson MyMathLab instead, which Silent Student does not solve.

HCC runs Eagle Online (Canvas) behind a direct email login

Houston Community College's LMS is Eagle Online — Instructure Canvas, branded "Eagle Online," at eagleonline.hccs.edu. Sign-in is a direct Canvas-native LDAP form (eagleonline.hccs.edu/login/ldap): your HCC student email is the username and your HCC email password signs you in, with no redirect to an outside SSO portal and — per HCC's own MFA page — no 2FA challenge on Canvas. Silent Student supports Canvas as a primary LMS, so it reads Eagle Online the same way your instructors post your courses.

How it works

From sign-in to submitted at HCC.

  1. 1

    Connect Eagle Online once

Sign in at eagleonline.hccs.edu with your HCC student email and email password — no SSO portal, no 2FA prompt. Silent Student keeps the Canvas session.

  2. 2

    It syncs every course

Your Eagle Online courses and assignments are pulled from Canvas and ordered by due date.

  3. 3

    Drafts wait for you

Essays and discussion posts are held in Draft Review, and a graded, single-attempt, untimed Canvas quiz stops for your review if an answer falls below your 70% confidence threshold.

  4. 4

    It runs in the background

Approved work is submitted and logged in Eagle Online while you do something else.

Questions

HCC FAQ

One thing: College Algebra. Cengage publishes a custom WebAssign package for HCC's MATH 0314/1314 corequisite sequence, and WebAssign is covered — but some College Algebra sections use Pearson MyMathLab instead, which Silent Student does not solve. Confirm which one your section uses before you rely on it.

No. HCC rolled out Microsoft Authenticator MFA college-wide, but its own MFA page states it is not required to sign into Eagle Online or the PeopleSoft Student System. Eagle Online stays a plain HCC-email-and-password login, so there is no 2FA wall for Silent Student to clear.

Native Eagle Online quizzes, essays, and discussions — including OpenStax-based core courses like GOVT 2305 and PSYC 2301 — plus paid courseware it automates: the McGraw Hill SmartBook readings for ACCT 2301, and Cengage WebAssign for College Algebra (MATH 1314) sections that use it. If your math section runs Pearson MyMathLab instead, that is not a dedicated solver, so verify your section first.

Yes. The Texas A&M Engineering Academy at HCC and the UH/HCC Engineering Academy co-enroll you at HCC and the university at once, so you take core on Eagle Online and engineering on the partner's system. Silent Student also supports Texas A&M's Canvas at canvas.tamu.edu, and if you transfer onward to UT Austin's Canvas or to Blinn College's eCampus (D2L Brightspace), it works there as well.

HCC's academic honesty policy is yours to follow. What we can describe is the mechanism, including its limits: your Canvas essays, discussion posts and file uploads always become drafts for you to read, edit and approve, and are never submitted on their own whatever confidence the model reports. Quizzes work differently — on a graded, single-attempt, untimed Canvas quiz with time still on the clock, an answer below your confidence threshold (70% by default) stops the quiz for your review, while timed and multi-attempt quizzes submit on their own. External courseware is the one to know about: it has no draft step at all, so a Packback post publishes as it is written.

Leave the lid up and stay on power. Silent Student is a desktop app for macOS and Windows that runs your Eagle Online queue in the background after you connect once, and it holds your machine awake while work is still in the queue — but it cannot stop a closing lid from sleeping the laptop, or wake a laptop that has already gone to sleep.

Sign into Eagle Online and open the course. HCC uses free OpenStax texts for several high-enrollment courses, so many sections have no external platform at all — if there is no publisher link in the course, the work is native Canvas and Silent Student handles it directly.

No SSO, no 2FA — HCC is the simplest setup here

Eagle Online takes a plain Canvas login, and every course we looked at came back covered. Sync it once and check your own sections — especially if you are in College Algebra.

What waits for you and what doesn't. Written work in your LMS — essays, discussion posts and file uploads — is always saved as a draft for you to read, edit and approve, and is never submitted on its own. Work on external courseware has no draft step: platforms like Packback publish as the solver writes them. Quizzes use a separate review hold, described in the FAQ above.
