D2L Brightspace grade calculator
D2L Brightspace calculates your Final Calculated Grade with one of two grading systems. Points divides total points earned by total maximum points. Weighted gives each category a percentage of the final grade and splits it among the items inside. Ungraded work is either dropped or counted as 0, depending on a course setting. This free D2L Brightspace grade calculator follows D2L’s rules for both systems, including drop lowest and bonus items.

How does D2L Brightspace calculate your final grade?
Every Brightspace grade book uses one grading system, set in the Grades Setup Wizard or under Grades > Settings. D2L’s help describes three:
| Grading system | How the final grade is calculated | In this calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Weighted | Categories and items contribute a percentage toward a final grade worth 100%. An item’s contribution comes from its weight in the category and the category’s weight. | Weighted, with all three distribution options. |
| Points | “Total points earned divided by total maximum points, multiplied by 100.” Categories are subtotals and carry no weight. | Points. |
| Formula | A custom formula written in Brightspace formula syntax. It may not be available at your school. | Not covered. Ask your instructor for the formula. |
The number Brightspace works out is the Final Calculated Grade. Your instructor can release it, or release a Final Adjusted Grade they set by hand.

How do category weights and item weights combine?
In a Weighted grade book, a category’s weight is its share of the final grade, and the items inside it split that share. D2L’s examples: a category worth 10% with two equally weighted items gives each item 5% of the final grade. A quiz with a maximum of 10 points and a weight of 20%, scored 8 out of 10, contributes 16% toward the final grade.
How the category’s weight is split depends on its distribution setting:
| Distribution | Each item’s share of the category |
|---|---|
| Manually assign weight to items in the category | The weight your instructor types. If the weights do not total 100%, Brightspace warns your instructor but scales them in proportion, so three items at 25% each count about 33.33% each. |
| Distribute weights by points across all items | Its maximum points over the category’s total, so a 50-point essay counts five times a 10-point quiz. |
| Distribute weight evenly across all items | An equal share for every non-bonus item. This is the only weighted setting with drop rules. |
An item with a weight of 0% is left out of the final grade. In a Points grade book your instructor ticks Exclude from Final Grade Calculation instead.

Drop ungraded items or treat ungraded items as 0?
Brightspace has a course setting for work that has no grade yet. D2L describes the two choices this way:
| Setting | What it does | D2L’s advice |
|---|---|---|
| Drop ungraded items | Leaves ungraded items out of the final grade calculation. | Use it early in the term, or when missing work should not lower the average. |
| Treat ungraded items as 0 | Counts every ungraded item as 0. | Use it to show the lowest possible grade until a real score is entered. |
Here is a course with Quizzes at 30% (83% after the lowest of four quizzes is dropped), Assignments at 30% (63 of 70 points, 90%) and a Final exam at 40% that has not been taken.
Drop ungraded items: (30 × 83 + 30 × 90) ÷ 60 = 86.5%, a weight achieved of 51.9 out of the 60 graded so far. Treat ungraded items as 0: (30 × 83 + 30 × 90 + 40 × 0) ÷ 100 = 51.9%.
Inside a category, this calculator treats a dropped ungraded item the way D2L describes an exempted one: the remaining item weights are scaled “so the category still reaches 100% for that learner.” Two other settings matter too. “Automatically assign 0 to missing submissions” gives overdue work a 0, and “Automatically keep final grade updated” recalculates the final grade as scores come in.

How does drop lowest work in Brightspace?
A grade category can drop each student’s lowest or highest grades automatically. Brightspace sets it in the category’s Distribution section, as “Number of lowest non-bonus items to drop for each user” and the matching highest setting. D2L lists these requirements:
- Every non-bonus item in the category has the same maximum point value.
- The category distributes points or weight equally. In a Weighted grade book that means “Distribute weight evenly across all items.”
- Bonus items are never dropped, and dropping works only within one category.
- Exempted items are removed before the drop rule runs, so an exemption is never the lowest grade.
D2L’s example: Quizzes 1 to 4 score 90, 84, 75 and 40 with the lowest dropped. Brightspace calculates the category from 90, 84 and 75, which is 83%.
The calculator follows the same requirements. If a category does not meet them, it drops nothing and says why.

What is the difference between the Final Calculated Grade and the Final Adjusted Grade?
The Final Calculated Grade is the one Brightspace works out from your grade items and weights. The Final Adjusted Grade lets your instructor change a final grade by hand before releasing it, and they can copy the calculated grade over as a starting point. The course releases one of the two. D2L notes that once a final grade is overridden by hand, Brightspace stops updating it automatically. This calculator gives you the Final Calculated Grade.

How do bonus items and Can Exceed work?
A bonus item gives extra points without changing the total points possible. D2L says bonus grades cannot push a grade past the maximum for the final grade or for a category unless Can Exceed is selected. Without it, 48 of 50 points plus a 5-point bonus caps at 50 of 50. With it, the category is 53 of 50, or 106%.
In a Weighted grade book, the calculator counts a bonus item by its weight under manual distribution and by its points under distribution by points. Under even distribution it counts as one more equal share, because D2L’s help does not spell that case out.

Why your Brightspace grade might not match
- The final grade has not been released or is out of date. Without automatic updates, your instructor has to recalculate it.
- Your course releases the Final Adjusted Grade. An adjusted grade can be any number your instructor enters.
- You are exempt from an item. It is left out even when ungraded items count as 0.
- An interim calculation includes dropped grades. D2L says on-demand calculations can still include dropped items under its default Milestone Calculation setting, so they can differ from the Final Calculated Grade.
- The course uses a Formula grading system. A formula can set rules, like a minimum exam score, that no general calculator knows about.
- Rounding on screen. Brightspace calculates with the unrounded value and rounds only for display, to the number of decimals your course shows.

D2L Brightspace grade calculator FAQ
Why is my D2L final calculated grade not showing?
Your instructor has not released it yet, or the course releases the Final Adjusted Grade instead. Final grades can be released automatically or by hand, and without automatic updates an instructor may need to recalculate them first. Until then you can work the grade out here from the scores you can see.
What does dropped mean in D2L?
It means a category drop rule removed that grade from the calculation. Brightspace excludes the lowest (or highest) scoring items from your category and final grade, but the grade itself stays in the grade book.
Can I see how Brightspace calculated my final grade?
Only if your instructor turns on Final Grade Calculation Display. It puts a calculator icon beside your final grade in My Grades, and selecting it shows how the grade was built from your grade items.
Why do my Brightspace category weights not add up to 100%?
Item weights inside a category that do not total 100% are scaled in proportion, and D2L asks instructors to keep category weights at 100%. With Drop ungraded items, the final grade only counts the categories that have grades, so the weight graded so far can be less than 100.
Is D2L the same as Brightspace?
Yes. D2L is the company and Brightspace is its learning platform, so schools call it D2L, Brightspace or D2L Brightspace. The grade math on this page applies under any of those names.
Does this calculator send my grades anywhere?
No. The math runs in your browser, nothing you type is sent to a server, and nothing is saved. Closing the tab clears it.
Using a different learning platform? Try the Blackboard grade calculator, the Moodle grade calculator or the Canvas grade calculator. For a single exam, the final grade calculator works out the score you need, and the other free tools cover GPA and test grades.
