Percentage to GPA calculator

On the common plus and minus scale, 93% or higher is an A (4.0), 90–92.99% an A- (3.7), 87–89.99% a B+ (3.3) and 83–86.99% a B (3.0). Type a percentage, or one per course, to get the letter and the grade points on the 4.0, 4.3 and weighted 5.0 scales, with your own school’s cutoffs if they differ.

Percentage to GPA chart

This is the scale the calculator starts with. Many US colleges and high schools use these cutoffs or ones close to them. The honors and AP columns add 0.5 and 1.0 to the 4.0-scale points, the most common weighting, and an F never gets the extra.

Why there is no single conversion

Percent cutoffs and grade points are set by each school, not by a national standard. The College Board says so on its own GPA guide: the ranges in its chart “reflect one commonly used system, but your school may calculate GPA differently,” and “some schools don’t use pluses and minuses, and others have different grade cutoffs.” Its chart uses whole letters only: A for 90–100, B for 80–89 and C for 70–79. It also notes that colleges may recalculate your GPA and “adjust or remove weighting assigned to AP or honors.” Source: College Board BigFuture, How to calculate your GPA on a 4.0 scale.

So pick the scale in your syllabus or student handbook. The calculator has four common ones (plus and minus with or without an A+, letters only, and Canvas’s default) and lets you type your school’s own cutoffs, such as A 90, B 80, C 70, D 65, F 0.

A worked example

Four courses on the plus and minus scale with A+, with no rounding:

  • Biology, 97.5%, 4 credits, regular: A+, worth 4.0 on the 4.0 scale and 4.3 on the 4.3 scale.
  • English, 85.5%, 3 credits, honors: B, worth 3.0, or 3.5 weighted.
  • Calculus, 78%, 4 credits, AP: C+, worth 2.3, or 3.3 weighted.
  • History, 89.5%, 3 credits, regular: B+, worth 3.3.

Multiply each course’s points by its credits and divide by the 14 credits. On the 4.0 scale that is (16 + 9 + 9.2 + 9.9) / 14 = 44.1 / 14 = 3.15. On the 4.3 scale the A+ counts 4.3, giving 45.3 / 14 = 3.24. Weighted, with the honors and AP extras, it is 49.6 / 14 = 3.54.

Rounding changes it. If your school rounds to a whole percent, History’s 89.5% becomes 90%, an A- worth 3.7, and the 4.0-scale GPA rises to 45.3 / 14 = 3.24. Press “Fill in the example” in the calculator, then switch the rounding, to see both.

GPA = sum of (grade points × credits) / sum of credits

What GPA is 95, 90, 85, 80, 75 or 70 percent?

On the scale above: 95% is an A (4.0). 90% is an A- (3.7), and so is 92%. 89% is a B+ (3.3). 85% is a B (3.0). 80% is a B- (2.7). 75% is a C (2.0). 70% is a C- (1.7). 65% is a D (1.0), and anything under 60% is an F (0.0). On a letters-only scale, 90% and up is an A (4.0), 80 to 89.99% a B (3.0), and so on down.

How do you convert a GPA to a percentage?

Only roughly. A GPA is an average of grade points, so a 3.5 can come from half A’s and half B’s, or from all B+ and A- grades. On the chart above, a 3.5 sits between B+ (3.3, 87–89.99%) and A- (3.7, 90–92.99%), so the honest answer is a range: somewhere from 87 to 92.99 percent. The calculator’s GPA box shows where any GPA falls on the scale you chose. If a school or application asks for a percentage, use its own conversion table if it has one.

4.0, 4.3 and weighted 5.0 scales

  • 4.0 scale: an A and an A+ are both 4.0. It is the most common scale.
  • 4.3 scale: an A+ is worth 4.3 and everything else is the same. Some colleges use it.
  • Weighted 5.0 scale: common in high schools. Honors classes add 0.5 and AP, IB or dual-enrollment classes add 1.0, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. Some schools give no extra below a C; this calculator gives none to an F.

Which calculator to use

This one starts from percentages. If your transcript already shows letters, the college GPA calculator takes letters and credits and adds a cumulative GPA. For honors and AP classes counted side by side, use the high school GPA calculator, and to find what you need next term, the raise GPA calculator. To get a percentage from a test score first, use the test score calculator, or from a points-based course, the points grade calculator.

Percentage to GPA FAQ

How do I convert a percentage to a GPA?

Find the letter your percentage earns on your school’s scale, then the grade points for that letter: on the common scale, 93% and up is an A (4.0), 90–92.99% an A- (3.7), 87–89.99% a B+ (3.3). For a GPA across courses, multiply each course’s points by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits.

What is 85 percent as a GPA?

On the plus and minus scale, 85% is a B, worth 3.0 on the 4.0 scale, 3.5 in an honors class and 4.0 in an AP class on a weighted scale. On a letters-only scale it is also a B (3.0).

Is an 89.5 a B+ or an A-?

It depends on whether your school rounds. Without rounding, 89.5% is below the 90% cutoff, so it is a B+ (3.3). If grades are rounded to a whole percent, 89.5 becomes 90 and it is an A- (3.7). The calculator does both; choose the rounding your syllabus describes.

What is a 3.5 GPA as a percentage?

There is no exact percentage, because a GPA is an average of grade points. On the common scale a 3.5 falls between a B+ (3.3, 87–89.99%) and an A- (3.7, 90–92.99%), so it corresponds to somewhere from 87 to 92.99 percent.

What is the difference between the 4.0 and 4.3 GPA scales?

Only the A+. On the 4.0 scale an A+ is worth 4.0, the same as an A. On the 4.3 scale it is worth 4.3. Every other letter has the same points on both.

How do honors and AP classes change a GPA?

On a weighted scale, an honors class commonly adds 0.5 grade points and an AP or IB class adds 1.0, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. Schools differ, and colleges may recalculate your GPA without the extra, as the College Board notes.

Does this calculator send or save my grades?

No. The math runs in your browser, and the numbers and names you type are not sent to any server or stored on your device. Close the tab and they are gone. Like every page on this site, the page itself is counted in our visit statistics, which never include what you type.
