Hawkes Learning + Silent Student: Learn, Practice, Certify and the strike count
Every Hawkes lesson runs Learn, then Practice, then Certify, and only Certify is graded. In an LMS course, you reach Hawkes through its single sign-on link. Here is how strikes and mastery work, and where a screen-reading agent fits in.

Will Silent Student run on Hawkes Learning?
It’s designed to: the agent handles whatever page is in front of it, Hawkes included. We just don’t have a Hawkes run on record to show you, so stay close for your first Certify.

Hawkes Learning, in detail
Hawkes Learning builds every assignment on the same three steps, and grades only the last one, Certify, against a Mastery Level your instructor sets.

How is a Hawkes lesson put together?
How is a Hawkes lesson put together?
In three steps. Learn teaches with videos, animated concept builders and interactive skill checks. Practice gives algorithmically generated problems with step-by-step tutorials, and it is ungraded and penalty-free. Certify asks you to reach your instructor’s proficiency level with no tutoring aids, and it is the graded part. WebTests, Hawkes’s tests, are separate and can require LockDown Browser.

How do strikes and the Mastery Level work in Certify?
How do strikes and the Mastery Level work in Certify?
Your instructor sets a Mastery Level, the share of Certify questions you must get right, and one miss past that allowance ends the try. Hawkes’s example: with 20 questions at 80%, you need 16 right, so “you have four strikes total.” Wrong steps in multi-step questions count as strikes too. “If you exceed four strikes, you’ll be placed out of Certify and have to start over.”

Which Hawkes study tools can you use in Certify?
None of the tutoring ones. Hawkes says Certify is done “without access to tutoring aids,” and its AI Tutor is available only in Practice. Practice also has Explain Error, which shows where your reasoning broke down, and Step-by-Step, Hint and Solution. Practice WebTests let you build ungraded, timed tests from lessons you choose.

What part of Hawkes stays yours?
What part of Hawkes stays yours?
Certify’s rules make some moments costly, and some work is off limits.
- Strikes are final. Each wrong answer, or wrong step, is a strike, and the agent cannot take one back. Go past the allowance and Certify starts over.
- WebTests. WebTests in LockDown Browser or with Respondus Monitor are for you to take.
- Learn and Practice. They are ungraded, and they are where Hawkes teaches what Certify and WebTests then ask. Working them yourself is how you get ready for a WebTest.
- Mastery status. Hawkes shows whether a lesson is mastered. The app has no Hawkes completion check, so look there.
Does it take Hawkes WebTests?
No. A WebTest in Respondus LockDown Browser or under Respondus Monitor, or any other proctored test, is yours. Silent Student does not take it or work around the proctoring.

Does Hawkes use LockDown Browser for WebTests?
When your instructor requires it. Hawkes says that if Respondus LockDown Browser is required, “you will see a message displayed that Respondus LockDown Browser is required after selecting your WebTest.” It installs on Windows, Mac or ChromeOS, not phones or tablets, and an exam that also uses a webcam through Respondus Monitor needs at least 4 GB of available RAM.

What happens if I opt out of Inclusive Access for Hawkes?
Schools in the Inclusive Access Program bill Hawkes materials through tuition, and students create accounts with the Hawkes Single Sign On link in their LMS course. You can opt out through the school’s bookstore, but Hawkes says your course access is suspended once you are reported as opted out. To restore it, sign in through your LMS and select Purchase on your Dashboard; completed assignment grades come back with your access.

What do Hawkes’s Terms of Use and license say about automated tools?
Hawkes’s Terms of Use, effective August 14, 2026, say the site license does not include the right “(f) to use any data mining, robots, or similar automated data gathering and extraction tools to access the site.” Its End-User License Agreement of the same date says: “You may not reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the SERVICES, or attempt to access them by any means other than the interfaces Hawkes provides. You may not scrape, crawl, bulk-download, or use automated tools to extract content.” Both are linked below in full; read them and decide.
