Norton InQuizitive: what Silent Student does in an activity

InQuizitive is W. W. Norton’s adaptive quizzing tool, often assigned before class. Silent Student, a Mac and Windows desktop app from $11.99 a month, opens an InQuizitive activity from your Canvas course and answers its questions one at a time, reading Norton’s feedback after each.

How is InQuizitive graded?

By points toward a Target Score your instructor sets. Norton’s student help says you must first answer a minimum number of questions to get any grade. After that, “Your grade is simply the percentage of the Target Score points you’ve accumulated,” so 500 of 1,000 points is 50%. “InQuizitive never stops you from continuing to answer questions,” so you can keep going until you reach 100%.

How does the InQuizitive confidence slider work?

It sets what a question is worth, from 20 to 100 points. Answer right and you gain that many; answer wrong and you lose them. Norton says a correct second attempt wins back half of the lost points, and some question types allow “second chance points” on later attempts. Five right in a row earns a bonus of 5% of the Target Score, and once you reach Level 2 or 3 your total never falls below that level’s threshold.

Is there an InQuizitive answer key?

No. Norton says “There is no ‘I give up’ or ‘Show me the answer’ button in InQuizitive,” and each question gives feedback “after every click, drag/drop, or keystroke.” InQuizitive also serves more questions on topics you miss, so there is no fixed key to look up. Silent Student answers the questions on your screen; it does not supply an answer key.

Which Norton InQuizitive question types does Silent Student handle?

Norton says every InQuizitive question is interactive: you drag and drop, click a choice or part of an image or sentence, or type. Rows marked Not tested have no run behind them yet.

What won’t it do on Norton InQuizitive?

InQuizitive runs on the general vision agent. Here is where that matters.

  • No InQuizitive-specific solver. InQuizitive runs on the general vision agent, which reads the screen. It is less predictable than a dedicated solver, so read the run log.
  • No completion check. It has no reader for InQuizitive’s Current Grade box, so a run can end unconfirmed on a finished activity. Check the box yourself before the Grades Accepted Until date.
  • Wrong answers cost points. A wrong first answer loses the points the confidence slider is set to, and the agent cannot take an answer back.
  • Image and typed questions are untested. Questions where you click part of an image or type an answer have not been tested.

How much does Silent Student cost for Norton InQuizitive?

Every plan includes Norton InQuizitive, billed monthly: Base is $11.99, Plus $24.99 and Pro $49.99 a month. There is no free plan. Norton’s own access fee, if your course has one, is separate.

Guides for Norton InQuizitive

What it handles

What does Silent Student do on Norton InQuizitive?

Norton InQuizitive activities opened from Canvas, answered one question at a time, drag-to-blank items included.

One question at a time

It answers a question, reads InQuizitive’s feedback, then moves on with Next Question.

Drag-to-blank through the dropdowns

For drag-to-blank items it uses the dropdown menus InQuizitive offers keyboard users, so each choice goes through Norton’s own controls.

Runs from your Canvas course

It follows the activity’s link from Canvas, so the grade reports through your course’s Norton connection.

Honest when it stops

A run that answered some questions and then got stuck is reported as partial, never as done.

How it works

How does Silent Student work on Norton InQuizitive, step by step?

  1. Pick the activity in Canvas

Open the Silent Student desktop app, find the InQuizitive assignment in your Canvas course list, and queue it.

  2. It opens InQuizitive from Canvas

The app follows the assignment’s link out of Canvas to the Norton activity. It does not ask for or type your Norton password.

  3. It answers each question

The vision agent reads the question, answers it, reads the feedback and goes to the next one.

  4. It reports what it answered

The run log lists what it answered. Check the Current Grade box to see where the activity stands.

What is the Grades Accepted Until date in InQuizitive?

InQuizitive’s version of a due date. Norton says that once it passes, “your work will be collected and you'll no longer be able to improve your grade,” though you can still answer questions to study.

Can your instructor see how long you spend in InQuizitive?

Yes. Norton’s InQuizitive page says the instructor’s Students tab shows “Student progress on each Learning Objective and time spent working in the activity.” Your own activity report marks each question you answered right or wrong. The Norton pages we read don’t describe AI detection, tab tracking or a lockdown browser for InQuizitive, so we make no claim either way. Silent Student does not hide or fake any activity.

Does InQuizitive work in Canvas?

Yes. Norton says InQuizitive “can be integrated directly into Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, or D2L/Brightspace.” When your instructor uses an LTI connection for grades, you don’t need a Student Set ID, and Norton says your grades “will automatically report to your instructor.” Silent Student follows the activity’s link from your Canvas course.

What do Norton’s Terms of Use say about automated tools?

Norton’s Terms of Use, effective December 19, 2023, cover its websites and online services. They say you may not “gather, obtain, use, access or otherwise copy any part of the Sites or Site Content using any bot, spider, crawler, spyware, engine, device, software or any other automatic device, utility or manual process of any kind,” and they bar putting Norton content into outside tools, “including those using artificial intelligence technologies.” In our reading, that reaches Silent Student. We are not lawyers. Read the Terms yourself before you decide. Norton’s clause sits next to other publishers’ in our table of homework platform terms on AI tools.

How does Silent Student answer InQuizitive drag-and-drop questions?

Through the keyboard path InQuizitive already provides. Its drag-to-blank items hide the word chips from screen readers and offer one small dropdown menu per blank instead. Until late September 2026 the agent could not see those menus, and two runs ended without an answer. Since then the app lists them and picks each choice through the page’s own menu.
