Gauth vs ChatGPT vs Photomath: which homework app does what

Gauth, ChatGPT and Photomath all solve a problem you photograph or type, and show the steps. Gauth, from GauthTech Pte. Ltd., covers most school subjects and adds human tutors. Photomath, a Google app, does math only and runs only on phones. ChatGPT, from OpenAI, is a general assistant that also reads images. In their normal modes, none of them types the answer into DeltaMath, IXL, ALEKS or WebAssign for you.

Disclosure: we make Silent Student, one of the tools on this page. We did not test Gauth, ChatGPT or Photomath; their facts come from their own sites and store listings, listed under Sources. Checked .

Short answer

  • Gauth: AI answers with steps in most school subjects, plus human tutors. There is a free tier; Gauth Plus is $11.99 a month, $31.99 for three months or $99.99 a year (gauthmath.com). iPhone and Android apps and a web version.
  • Photomath: math only, “for elementary through college.” Step-by-step explanations are free; the paid plan is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year (photomath.com). iPhone and Android only.
  • ChatGPT: a general assistant that reads a photo of a problem, with a Study mode that teaches step by step. Free, Go $8, Plus $20 and Pro from $100 a month (pricing). Web, phone and desktop apps.
  • The job none of them does in normal use: enter the answer in your homework platform and submit it. Silent Student, which we make, does that from Canvas on a Mac or Windows computer, from $11.99 a month. No free plan.

What do Gauth, ChatGPT and Photomath each do?

All three take a problem you photograph, upload or type, and return an answer with the working. They differ in three ways: which subjects they cover, whether a person can answer, and which devices they run on.

Gauth

Gauth calls itself an “AI study companion.” Its App Store listing names math, biology, physics and chemistry, and its homepage adds statistics, calculus, economics, literature, business, writing and social science. Beyond the AI answers, the homepage says “Thousands of real tutors are available 24/7,” and the app describes an “AI Live Tutor” that explains by voice on a virtual whiteboard. Its Assignment Solver takes uploaded files such as PDF, Word and PowerPoint. The publisher on both app stores is GauthTech Pte. Ltd., which gives a Singapore address on Google Play.

Photomath

Photomath scans a math problem, “handwritten, in a textbook, or on a screen,” and breaks it into steps. Its site lists elementary math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and calculus. The App Store listing says basic step-by-step explanations come “at no charge,” and Photomath Plus adds animated tutorials and textbook solutions. Both app stores list it under Google LLC.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s general assistant, so it answers in any subject. It reads an uploaded photo or screenshot, though image and file uploads are limited on the Free plan. Study mode, on every plan, gives “step-by-step guidance instead of quick answers.” Paid plans add agent mode, which works websites in a virtual browser. That is a different job, covered in ChatGPT for online homework.

Is Gauth better than ChatGPT for math?

We can’t say which one gets more math right: we have not tested either, and neither company publishes a method we could check. What differs is the format. Gauth returns one worked solution per problem and can pass a hard one to a human tutor. ChatGPT answers in a conversation, so you can ask why a step works or ask for a similar practice problem, and its Study mode holds back the answer while it walks you through. If you want a numbered solution for each photo, that is Gauth’s default. If you want to ask follow-up questions, ChatGPT is built for that. Either can be wrong, so compare the answer with your notes or with your platform’s own feedback before you rely on it.

Gauth vs Photomath: which is better for math homework?

Photomath sticks to math, and its free version already shows step-by-step explanations. Gauth covers many more subjects and adds tutors and file uploads, while its plan table lists Unlimited Answers only on Gauth Plus. The paid prices are close: Photomath’s plan is $9.99 a month and Gauth Plus $11.99. The bigger difference is the device. Photomath runs only on a phone, while Gauth also works in a web browser on a laptop. Our Photomath on PC page covers the computer options for math.

Is Gauth legit and safe?

Gauth is a real, widely installed app. Google Play lists more than 100 million downloads, and the publisher, GauthTech Pte. Ltd., gives a Singapore business address and a support email on its store page. The App Store rates the app 4+, and Gauth’s plan page says “You must be 18 or older to purchase.” Before you upload files, read its privacy policy.

Whether it is safe for your grade is a separate question. Gauth’s own footer says it “is an AI study companion designed to support learning, not a substitute for students’ own work,” and your school’s honor code decides how you may use any AI tool.

Can you use Gauth on a PC or Mac?

Yes, in a web browser. The gauthmath.com homepage takes a dragged-in image or a pasted screenshot, and its plan table says plans are “Accessible across desktop, mobile, and web.” Gauth’s download page offers no Windows or Mac app. It offers the iPhone and Android apps by QR code, and the App Store lists the app for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple Vision, with no Mac entry.

On extensions: the Chrome Web Store page for “Gauth - AI Homework & Study Helper” returned an empty listing when we checked on October 20, 2026. Check the store yourself before installing anything that uses the Gauth name. Photomath has no computer version at all, and ChatGPT has desktop apps for Mac and Windows.

What none of the three does: enter answers in your homework platform

On DeltaMath, IXL, Big Ideas Math, Savvas Realize, ALEKS or WebAssign, a solved problem is half the job. You still read each question off the platform, photograph or retype it, then type the answer back into that platform’s answer box in the format it accepts. Gauth, Photomath and ChatGPT’s chat all stop at the answer.

Silent Student, which we make, works on the other side of that gap. It is a Mac and Windows app that opens assignments linked from your Canvas course, enters each answer in the platform and submits, working through them in due-date order. On WebAssign it uses a solver written for WebAssign. On DeltaMath, IXL, Big Ideas Math, Savvas Realize and ALEKS it uses a general vision agent, which is less predictable, and we have published no runs for those platforms.

Read the publisher’s terms first. IXL’s Terms of Service bar the use of “an Agent” to interact with IXL, and McGraw Hill’s Terms of Use, which cover ALEKS, bar AI agents unless McGraw Hill authorizes them in writing. In our reading, both reach Silent Student. We are not lawyers. Silent Student does not take proctored exams.

Which one to pick

Which should you pick?

Each one fits a different way of working.

Pick Gauth if you want one app for many subjects, a version that runs in a laptop browser, and the option of a human tutor.

Pick Photomath if your homework is math only, you work from a phone, and you want free step-by-step explanations.

Pick ChatGPT if you want to ask follow-up questions in any subject, or use Study mode to learn the method.

Pick Silent Student (we make it) if your homework lives in Canvas and the platforms it links to, and you want it entered and submitted from a Mac or Windows computer. Read how it handles your data.

Silent Student’s limits: no free plan; a public beta whose Mac build is self-signed, not Apple-notarized, and whose Windows build is unsigned, so your computer warns before it opens; no proctored exams; no Chromebook, iPad or phone.
